Winning Ways Wing their Way to Ely Air Cadets

Gold medals all round and hearty congratulations to the Central and East Region Rugby Squad who, over the weekend, lifted the Air Training Corps Rugby cup.

Six of the team came from Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire Wing with all six selected to play for the Corps (National) Rugby Team against The Army Cadets. Half of those selected for the National Air Cadet Rugby Team were cadets from 1094 (Ely) Squadron.

Our three cadets; Leading Cadet Finn Elcombe, Corporal Callum Bond and Flight Sergeant Rory Donoghue will be awarded their Corps Blues when they play for the National team in the near future.

Corps Blues are only ever awarded to a handful of cadets each year when cadets represent all 55,000 members of the Air Training Corps in competitive Sport against other cadet services at National Level Competitions.

To emphasise just how rare an honour and just how high the standard is, these will be the first Corps Blues awarded to any Ely Cadet in the Squadron’s 79 year history.

To have three awarded at once is even more unusual and we can only hope that nothing prevents the match going ahead as back in April of 2018 FS Donoghue was also part of the Corps Championship winning side but then the 2019 tournament was cancelled.

Third time lucky for a trio of champions? Congratulations lads and we all wish you well at the nationals.
