We have come to the end of a year long knitting campaign called The Big Knit, this year’s aim was The Biggest Ever Knit. We set ourselves a target to submit 27,000 little hats, for which innocent smoothies pay .25p per hat. Whilst we didn’t quite reach that, the response to the challenge has been amazing and has raised an amazing £6,571.50 for our charity.
The Big Knit Challenge is about so much more than fundraising. Individuals and groups of all ages have been inspired taking part in the craft of knitting (many have never knitted before and have learned) and meeting as ‘groups with a focus’ encouraging social activity and friendships. We have also heard from individuals who are housebound and are delighted to be able to take part and contribute.
Age UK Cambridgeshire and Peterborough are committed to helping older people make more of life. We aim to enable older people to:
• Be more independent and enjoy a better quality of life, with less need for more intensive services, whilst feeling safe within their own homes and communities.
• Be well-informed and aware of, and able to participate in, their local communities.
• Enjoy improved health and well-being.
• Be supported in volunteering and community participation.
And
• That Age UK Cambridgeshire and Peterborough will be sustainable and stable for the future.
The Big Knit Challenge ticks all the boxes and it is thanks to the public for embracing and supporting us that we are able to support older people in the county.

The Age UK Facebook page wrote a post of thanks to all the people who have helped with The Big Knit:
“What a wonderful year we have all had. The Biggest Knit ever really has been just that. THANK YOU all so much. The support you have shown Age UK Cambridgeshire and Peterborough is amazing.
We have loved hearing all about your ‘knitting tales’ such as setting up ‘knit and knatter groups’, having ‘knit off’s, or recovering from illness and how the knitting has helped you. Opening the parcels of hats delivered to our offices is also great fun and seeing all your creativity.
The money raised will support our winter projects to help older people keep warm and well in winter through befriending visits, emergency cold weather support, warm meals and other vital services.
The Big Knit has been so successful we will be taking part again – details will follow after a short break. Please do keep your groups going and enjoying each others company. Keep knitting!
P.S. Not everyone letting us have little hats has sent an address with their contact details enabling us to personally thank them for their contribution. Please can you share this post or if you know of Big Knit knitters pass on our gratitude and thanks.
Well Done Everyone ! Thank You Thank You Thank You”
