Years 5&6 Boys Football Tournament Launches Inter-Primary Sports Year in Ely

The first inter-school primary tournament of the new academic year, organised by Active Play Education, took place on Friday 26 September at the Ely Outdoor Sports Association.

Seven teams from local schools — Ely St John’s Community Primary, Ely St Mary’s Church of England Junior, Isleham Church of England Primary, Isle of Ely Primary, Little Thetford Church of England Primary, and Wilburton Church of England Primary — took part in the Years 5 and 6 boys football tournament.

Played in a round-robin format, every team faced each other in 15-minute matches, with ten Young Leaders from Ely College volunteering as referees and scorekeepers.

After a series of close and exciting games, St John’s emerged as the overall winners, taking home the tournament cup, while St Mary’s 2s finished as runners-up. In addition, one player from each school was recognised for showing outstanding sportsmanship and received a medal.

Tournament organiser Julia Gilbert said:

“It was great to see the boys playing some excellent football. There was a fantastic team spirit shown by all the teams, and the boys looked like they were really enjoying themselves.”
