Ely Museum Proud to Celebrate Young Curators’ Exhibition

Museum reflects on 50 years of Ely’s history

The Young Curators’ Club at Ely Museum have been working with the museum team on a temporary exhibition to celebrate 50 years of Ely’s history. Ely’s city status was only officially confirmed in 1974 and as this anniversary approaches, the museum felt it would be a good time to look at how Ely has changed with the help of the fresh eyes of the next generation.

For the past two years, the Young Curators’ Club at Ely Museum has collaborated with the staff through monthly workshops after school. Students aged 12-16 have the chance to explore behind the scenes, discover more about our local history and help to shape museum activities. This exhibition has been an opportunity to further develop their skills.

Janine Fairlie, Learning and Engagement Officer at Ely Museum says:

“It was such a wonderful opportunity for our Young Curators to get involved in the organisation and planning of a temporary exhibition. As Curators they worked alongside museum staff to choose objects, write text and plan the layout and design.  It was lovely to see them all so engaged and to see how proud they were with their end result.”

With the challenges of the past few years, we have been more conscious than usual that we have been living through a period that will be recorded in the history books. But some of the most fascinating stories in history are those of everyday lives.

‘Our Ely at 50’ looks at the last 50 years of history in Ely and the immediate area and is a great opportunity to take a trip down memory lane. It also gives visitors the space to reflect on, and share, their own Ely memories.

We would love to hear from you about your thoughts and memories of the last 50 years in Ely and there is a book of memories in the exhibition gallery where you can record and share your thoughts about Ely’s recent decades.

A new ‘Celebrate Ely’ trail around the museum will be available from Good Friday, 29th March, so start the Easter Holidays with some family friendly fun!
