Ely Runners, enjoy varied training sessions around the streets and country lanes of Ely and the surrounding area.
Ely Runners meet, come rain or shine, at the Paradise Sports Centre for 7pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 9am on Sundays. Tuesday training consists of hill training, speed work, repetitions and intervals. Thursday training is usually a longer steady run around the City and surrounding countryside, depending on daylight.
Sundays is often a longer run in the countryside If you’re not sure where to start – come and train with us and see what you think. We meet at Ely’s Paradise Sports Centre at 7pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We are always up for people coming and joining us for a few sessions free of charge, just to see what they think!
A little history: In 1984 RAF medic Barry Garfoot was posted from Cyprus to the RAF Hospital at Ely where he met Martin Hadnett, another RAF medic and keen runner who eventually ran 2:30 in the London Marathon. Both trained at lunchtime with the RAF Hospital cross-country team and thought they should start a running club based at the Paradise Centre in Ely. In 1985, they contacted Maurice Reed (who was then Manager of the Paradise Centre) to arrange a meeting at the The King’s Arms pub in St Mary’s Street where Maurice said they could use the Paradise Centre as a base to meet and change. Thus in August 1985 was born Ely Runners.
The club now has a healthy membership and is active and present at many races and athletic events at various levels. The club also has a very active and well looked after juniors section. The club holds its own annual events some of which, guest runners are invited to. In recent years, Ely Runners have donated to Tommy’s charity and at each AGM the club nominates charities to donate money to. This year a donation was made to MAGPAS, which will likely be used for a defibrillator.
The club has also donated to Cambridge Parkrun and to the Arthur Rank Charity. Recognising that the club didn’t cater for those new to running, the beginner’s courses started in 2012. The sessions have gone from strength to strength and will soon be commencing course number sixteen on the 3rd of July 2017!! It is a ten week course for those aiming to complete a timed 5k at the end session. It is £20, with this being deducted from full club membership should they wish to join at a later date.
