The new bins and caddies are being provided as part of a district wide waste and recycling upgrade, to help people reduce waste and recycle more.

Each household on a standard waste collection will get one new black wheeled bin, which is replacing black sacks. This will be collected every two weeks.

Residents will also receive a smaller green food caddy to keep somewhere handy in their kitchen and a larger grey caddy with a lockable lid for food waste, to put out every week for collection. We are also providing a year’s worth of caddy liners to help.

The bins began to be delivered to households on Monday 30 March. We’ve got 45,000 properties to deliver to, so please bear with us.

All new bins will be delivered in time for the new service to start from 1 June. We’ll update our Facebook pages and website with details of when each town or village can expect to receive their new bins.

Attached to the black bins will be an information pack for residents and a calendar to explain when the new service will start and which bins to put out on which day.

Here are a few things residents need to know now:

DON’T USE BINS OR CADDY LINERS YET – Residents are being asked not to use the new bins until the service starts from 1 June. Black wheeled bins and food caddies put out before these dates will not be collected because they require specialised vehicles which won’t start operating until 1 June. The caddy liners cannot be used in your green lidded bins at any time. We won’t be able to empty your bin if you do.

CHECK DATES – To help make the new rounds more efficient, some residents may experience a change to their collection dates AFTER 1 JUNE. New calendars are provided inside the bins informing residents which day their bins or bags will be collected and which days to put them out.

The following areas will have a new bin day from 1 June:

Isleham, Queen Adelaide and Soham Fen – MONDAY collection
Aldreth, Bottisham, Coveney, Haddenham, Little Downham, Little Thetford, Lode, Lode Fen, Longmeadow, Mepal, Pymoor, Six Mile Bottom, Stretham, Wilburton – TUESDAY collection
Burwell, Reach, Swaffham Bulbeck, Swaffham Prior – WEDNESDAY collection
Littleport and Littleport Fen – THURSDAY collection

All other collection days, including Soham and Ely, remain unchanged.

With just two days remaining until the Government’s consultation on local government reorganisation in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough closes, residents, businesses and community organisations are being urged to find out more about Option B and have their say.

Option B is the proposal backed by Cambridge City, East Cambridgeshire District and South Cambridgeshire District councils. The Government is consulting on four options for reorganising Cambridgeshire’s seven existing councils into two or three new unitary councils.

This would replace the current two-tier system with fewer, larger unitary councils responsible for all local services, from housing and planning to waste, roads and social care.

What Option B proposes

Option B would reorganise the area into two new unitary councils:

• A Greater Cambridge council for Cambridge and South Cambridgeshire
• A North Cambridgeshire and Peterborough council for East Cambridgeshire, Fenland, Huntingdonshire and Peterborough

The three supporting councils believe this structure reflects existing economic geographies while ensuring strong, balanced local leadership.

Why the councils support Option B

Option B is considered the strongest and most ambitious proposal by the three councils because:

• Both new councils would be financially secure, with anticipated savings of £43 million a year. Savings would be reinvested to improve front line services across the region. This level of ambition is significantly higher than other proposals.
• The two councils would represent areas with different strengths but economic balance, helping to avoid a north south divide.
• A Greater Cambridge unitary would enable closer collaboration between key institutions including the Biomedical Campus, Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Anglia Ruskin University, science parks and the University of Cambridge.
• North Cambridgeshire and Peterborough would benefit from greater scale, increased funding potential and stronger ability to commission services to address local needs.
• Existing partnerships would be aligned, including shared services and the joint Local Plan between Cambridge and South Cambridgeshire.
• The rural nature of the northern unitary would support more tailored local engagement, ensuring services reflect the needs of individual communities.

What council leaders are saying

Cllr Cameron Holloway, Leader of Cambridge City Council, said:
“We now have very limited time left in this consultation, and we’re keen that people understand the Local Government Reorganisation process and the benefits that Option B could bring. This is an opportunity to shape modern, responsive councils that reflect our communities and economies.”

The game did not start well for the Tigers, who fell behind to an early unconverted try. Ely responded quickly, with Jake Alsop slotting a penalty to reduce the deficit. However, Colchester struck again with a converted try to extend their lead.

Alsop then took control, scoring three tries to bring the game level at 12–12. Momentum swung firmly in Ely’s favour as George Hay crossed to give the home side a 17–12 lead. Hay added his second soon after, with Alsop converting to extend the lead to 24–12.

As half time approached, the Tigers continued to press, with tries from Josh Flanders and Joel Scott Paul, along with another Alsop conversion, giving Ely a commanding 36–12 lead at the break.

Colchester came out strongly in the second half, scoring two quick tries to close the gap. Alfie Allen responded for the Tigers to stretch the lead back out to ten points. Matt French then added another try, with Alsop converting to keep Ely in control.

The visitors had the final say with a late score, but the Tigers had already done enough to secure a 48–40 victory in an entertaining, high scoring contest.

The Tigers started brightly, putting the home side under early pressure, but were unable to turn territory into points. Saffron Walden capitalised on a loose ball to break the deadlock after 15 minutes.

From there, momentum shifted firmly in favour of the home side, who added a series of tries to build a commanding 33–0 lead at half time.

Ely responded early in the second half with a penalty try to get on the scoreboard. However, Saffron Walden continued to press, adding three more tries to push beyond the 50 point mark.

The Tigers kept battling and were rewarded with a try from Tom Green. Alfie Allen soon added another, with Tom Gunbie converting, as Ely continued to show character despite the scoreline.

The home side added two further tries late on to seal a 71–19 victory.

As part of the upgrade, households will receive new bins free of charge, designed to help reduce waste and improve recycling across the district.

To help residents understand the changes, a series of drop-in sessions are taking place where people can view the new bins, ask questions and find out how the updated service will work.

Upcoming sessions include:

• Thursday 19 March – Isleham Society at The Beeches, 7pm for 7:30pm
• Thursday 26 March – Soham Warm Hub at Soham Town Rangers, 10am to 12 noon
• Saturday 2 May – Ely Eel Day, all day

At these sessions, the council’s waste and recycling team will be available to explain what the changes mean, what goes where and how food waste will be recycled.

Cllr Anna Bailey, Leader of East Cambridgeshire District Council, said the sessions are an opportunity for residents to get clear information ahead of the rollout.

“There is not long to go now before the new bins start arriving. We want to make sure everyone has had the opportunity to find out more about the service upgrade and ask questions.

“Our team can explain why the changes are being introduced, what they mean for households and what happens to food waste once it has been collected.”

New bins will begin arriving at homes from 16 March. Each delivery will include a full information pack with guidance on what goes in each bin and a collection calendar.

Residents will also receive information alongside their annual council tax bill and through council communication channels.

An Ely father is lacing up his trainers for an extraordinary challenge: running 12 half marathons in 12 months to raise funds for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People – inspired
by his seven-year-old daughter, Dottie, who is profoundly deaf.
Tom Maynard, 39 who lives in Ely, Cambridge, with his wife Rachael, Dottie and her three-year-old brother Rex, began the challenge in December as a way of marking
his 40th birthday.
“When I realised my 40th was coming up, I thought it would be fun to challenge myself to run a half marathon every month in the lead-up to November. But I also
wanted it to mean something,” explained Tom.
Tom’s daughter Dottie was born profoundly deaf with enlarged vestibular aqueducts and Mondini malformation. She now has cochlear implants* in both ears – the first
fitted when she was just 14 months old in May 2019 and the second a few months later.
Despite the challenges she faces, Dottie is thriving. She is in a mainstream school, where teachers wear a mini mic that sends sound directly to her implants. A teacher
of the deaf visits once a month to provide specialist support.
Listening takes immense concentration for her though, as Tom explains. “It’s very tiring and she often crashes out as soon as she gets home from school. Night-time is
particularly hard. When she takes her cochlear implants off, her world is completely silent and dark and that’s very isolating for her. We usually sit with her until she falls
asleep.”
Tom and his wife are hoping that a hearing dog could one day make a life-changing difference for Dottie.
“The way the dogs alert their partners to important and often life-saving sounds is amazing,” Tom said. “But more than that, it’s about companionship and comfort. Just
having a dog with her at nighttime would help Dottie feel safer and more secure.” That possibility is what fuels Tom’s 40th birthday challenge.
Tom is no stranger to running, having completed multiple London Marathons – his first in 2014, but this new challenge has required meticulous planning.

Tom began training in September ahead of his first race in December. His routine includes a run on Tuesdays, often through Regent’s Park, close to where he works in
Soho, a further run on a Thursday, and a longer weekend run.
Tom has already completed his first three races: ‘T’was the run before Christmas’ in Brandon near Bury St Edmunds, ‘Run for Cake’ in Peterborough and ‘Windmill Way
Wander’ in Bury St Edmunds.
On Sunday Tom will take on the Cambridge Half, which is ‘very scenic and takes in the university colleges’. In the coming months he’ll be taking part in similar events in
Manchester, the Goodwood Moto circuit and Bath. He is particularly excited to be taking part in the iconic Great North Run in Newcastle in September.
His final race in November will take place at Alton Towers, where runners pass through the theme park before having the opportunity to celebrate with a
rollercoaster ride or two.
“We’ve decided to make weekends of them,” Tom said. “It’s a great opportunity for us as a family to explore different parts of the UK together.”
Every mile represents more than personal achievement for Tom. It’s about raising awareness of the charity’s work, the everyday challenges of being deaf, and helping
children like Dottie feel safer, stronger and less alone.
Being deaf can greatly impact a person’s quality of life, making it difficult for them to communicate with others. This can cause them to withdraw from social situations
and experience overwhelming feelings of isolation, often resulting in anxiety, depression and loneliness.
In addition, the fear of missing important sounds, such as smoke, fire and intruder alarms, can leave deaf people feeling incredibly vulnerable and unsafe.

Some people spend their lives lifting others up, never asking for anything in return. Our dear friend Kim is one of those extraordinary people — a devoted mum to three amazing children, a loving wife to Nick (who has recently undergone open heart surgery), and a woman whose kindness has touched countless lives. Now, she needs us.

Until recently, Kim was a Principal Clinical Scientist at Cambridge University Hospitals, dedicating her career to helping others live healthier lives. Beyond her profession, she has always given her time generously — volunteering in a finance role with the England Korfball Association, managing the England U17, U19 and U21 teams, having an active role in the running of Ely Vikings both playing and coaching and supporting young athletes on their international journeys. If someone needed help, Kim was there without hesitation.

In July 2025, Kim was diagnosed with stage 4 non-small cell lung cancer, despite being a non-smoker. The cancer is advanced and inoperable, and due to a rare genetic mutation, the targeted treatment most likely to give her more time is not currently available on the NHS. After exhausting standard treatment options, private funding is now her only pathway forward.

This fundraiser is about one precious thing: time.

Time for Kim to continue being there for Alex, Josie, and Sam.

Time to stand beside Nick.

Time to make more memories with the people she loves.

And crucially time that will hopefully give medical science the chance to develop new treatments that may come to offer a cure.

Kim’s dream is heartbreakingly simple — to attend each of her children’s university graduations. With your help, we can bring that dream within reach.

Asking for help does not come naturally to someone who has spent her life giving back. Now, we have an opportunity to give back to her. The foundation will raise funds through both England Korfball Association and club initiatives and will operate with a minimum of five trustees and full governance to ensure transparency and lasting impact. Importantly, any surplus funds raised collectively for Kim will go directly into the foundation — helping others access critical support when they need it most. It is a legacy that perfectly reflects who Kim is: someone who continues to care for others, even in the face of her own fight.

Foundations unfortunately take a couple of months to set up but we are on it – watch this space – more details will follow soon. In the meantime, we will get going with this Just Giving page as time is not on our side. We expect Kim to need access to funds as early as May 2026.

During the ceremony, the LTA described 10is as “a truly innovative tennis club” that has built an impressive community despite operating on school grounds during limited evening and weekend hours. Running between 5.30pm and 10pm on weekdays and on Sundays, the Academy has grown to just under 175 members while delivering more than 25 hours of weekly coaching for children and adults.

Founded in September 2021 and based at King’s Ely, 10is Academy has developed a clear identity in a short period of time. The club welcomes complete beginners while also preparing advanced players to compete at high county and national levels. Its philosophy centres on personal attention, structured progression and an environment where players of all ages are respected, supported and enjoying their journey.

The LTA highlighted the club’s comprehensive internal competition system, including a structured box league and five one-day competitions each year. On the external stage, 10is teams have enjoyed sustained success in the Cambridgeshire and National Leagues, winning over 20 titles in their first four years. This winter alone, the Men’s 1, 2 and 3 teams each won their divisions, while the Ladies 1 team secured promotion.

Inclusion was also recognised as a key strength. The club received strong nomination for the ‘Tennis Opened Up Award’, reflecting its commitment to making tennis accessible. Junior SEND players from 10is were recently welcomed at the National Tennis Centre to play alongside Jodie Burrage — a moment that underlined the club’s belief that opportunity should not be limited by circumstance.

Each year, the Academy also organises a special coaching clinic with an international player or coach, including Dom Inglot, giving members the opportunity to experience the standards and insights of the professional game within their own club environment.

Reflecting on the award, Director Sebastien Scaux said:

“This award recognises the people who make the club what it is — the players who train consistently, the parents who support, the coaches who keep improving and our partners who believe in what we are building.

We didn’t set out to chase recognition. We set out to create a tennis club with purpose and direction. The award encourages us to keep raising standards thoughtfully while protecting the atmosphere that makes the club special.”

One comment shared during the ceremony captured the spirit of 10is Academy:

“There’s a real family atmosphere — people look out for each other, celebrate progress, and genuinely enjoy spending time together on and off court.”

Following the county recognition, 10is Academy will now progress to the LTA National Finals and Excellence Awards, where it will be considered alongside other county winners from across the country.

As the Easter holidays approach, courts at 10is remain busy with coaching, internal competitions and preparation for upcoming holiday camps, continuing the steady growth that has defined the club since its creation.

For many in Ely and the surrounding villages, the award confirms what they already experience each week: a tennis club that combines innovation, inclusion and competitive ambition with genuine enjoyment.

The children attended the groundbreaking ceremony at the Cathedral Rise development site, where housebuilder Bellway is delivering the properties as part of the Orchards Green neighbourhood on the outskirts of Ely.

House captains from each year group at the school, which is near the new development, were invited to the site along with Bellway staff and representatives from groundworks company MIDA.

Headteacher at the school Bryony Surtees said: “Our pupils enjoyed attending the groundbreaking ceremony at Cathedral Rise. It was a unique and memorable opportunity for them so thank you to Bellway for inviting us to be part of the occasion.

“As new homes are built and people move in, our pupils who attended the groundbreaking will be able to say they were there right at the start of construction and I’m sure they will take a keen interest in seeing how it progresses in the years ahead.

“Cathedral Rise will be an important addition to the area and we look forward to welcoming children who come to live there as pupils here at our school.”

Bellway Eastern Counties Construction Manager Jessica Garton said: “Inviting children from the Isle of Ely Primary School to attend the groundbreaking ceremony at Cathedral Rise was an inspiring way to launch construction of these sustainable new homes.

All the homes will be heated with low-carbon air source heat pumps and each property will have an electric vehicle charging point.

Cathedral Rise will be the fifth phase of the wider Orchards Green project which is set to provide 1,200 homes for the area.

Ely College has been designated as a Department for Education RISE Behaviour and Attendance Hub, recognising the school’s exceptional performance in student attendance and positive behaviour management.

The prestigious appointment means Ely College will work alongside schools nationally to share best practices and support improvements in attendance and behaviour systems. The school was selected following a rigorous application process that highlighted its outstanding outcomes and evidence-based approaches.

Simon Warburton, Principal of Ely College and Bishop Laney Sixth Form, said: “We are absolutely delighted to be recognised as a national hub school. This appointment reflects the dedication of our entire staff team and the positive partnership we have with students and families. Our attendance rates exceed national and contextual averages, of 92% while our suspension rates remain well below national levels at 2.7% versus 7.83% nationally.”

As a hub school, Ely College will provide support, guidance, and training to other schools seeking to improve their attendance and behaviour outcomes. This includes hosting visits, delivering professional development, and sharing the strategies that have proven successful locally.

The DfE’s RISE programme (Recognising and Improving School Ethos) aims to create a network of excellent schools that can support system-wide improvement in behaviour and attendance.

Ely College serves 1,640 students aged 11-18 and has shown consistent improvement in recent years, with its Progress 8 score rising from 0.34 to 0.65.  The college’s recent Ofsted report (March 2025) highlighted the “exemplary behaviour of many pupils” and that low level disruption was, “very rare”.

It was the home side who started sharply, crossing in the corner early on, though the conversion was missed. Southwold added a second try after 16 minutes to lead 12–0. During that passage of play, Ely were reduced to 14 men after Matt French was shown a yellow card.

The pressure continued, with Southwold adding a third try, this time converted, to extend the lead to 19–0. From a scrum deep inside their own half, the hosts moved the ball the length of the pitch to score again, converting to make it 26–0.

From the restart, Southwold once more ran the ball from deep to score a further converted try, taking a commanding 31–0 lead into half time.

The second half began brightly for the Tigers. A kick through was collected deep by John Surbury, who linked up with Adam Tallack before Surbury powered over for Ely’s first try. Matt McCarthy added the conversion to reduce the deficit.

Any momentum was short lived, as Southwold responded from a scrum on the left, moving the ball wide to score in the corner, adding the conversion to make it 38–7. A dropped ball deep in the Southwold half was then intercepted and returned for another unconverted try, stretching the score to 42–7.

The Tigers had the final say of the match, with Alfie Allen crossing the line. McCarthy converted to complete the scoring, as the game finished 42–14.

Alfie Allen was named Man of the Match.

The Tigers will return to action on 28 February, when they face Ipswich YM in a crucial relegation clash.

These included ‘School Project of the Year’ for the Bishop Laney Sixth Form refurbishment at Ely College, and ‘Decarbonisation/Green Project of the Year’ for its Trust-wide Carbon Reduction Initiatives. The Education Property Awards, launched in 2025 by Nexus Media Group, recognise innovative projects transforming UK education spaces.

While the Trust did not win on the night, being named a finalist in both categories represents a major sector-wide recognition of Meridian Trust’s leadership and innovation.

The Bishop Laney Sixth Form refurbishment transformed an ageing tower block into a modern, accessible Post-16 learning environment, delivered on time, on budget, and aligned with Meridian Trust’s sustainable design ambitions. Following a £5 million investment supported by the Department for Education, the project reimagined Needham Tower as a high-quality sixth form hub serving more than 300 students, with state-of-the-art classrooms, collaborative study areas, social spaces, and inclusive design throughout.

Martin Hair, Director of Estates at Meridian Trust, said: “We’re incredibly proud of what has been achieved at Ely College. The project shows what can be accomplished when vision, collaboration, and community focus come together. It’s wonderful to see our Estates and school teams recognised nationally for their hard work.”

Meridian Trust has also made exceptional progress toward its target of becoming carbon net zero by 2030, investing £1.16 million in renewable energy and smart building systems. These initiatives (including the installation of almost 900 solar PV panels and new Building Management Systems across schools) generated over 950,000 kWh of clean electricity, reduced carbon emissions by more than 260 tonnes, and saved over £250,000 in energy costs.

For residents it means Council Tax paid to the district council can remain at £142.14 for an average Band D property – the same as it was for the year 2013/14.

This is less than £2.75 a week for all our services, which include free parking, free garden bin collections, community advice drop in centres and affordable housing.

It is the only district, county or unitary authority still in operation in the country not to have put up bills during this time.

Cllr Anna Bailey, Leader of East Cambridgeshire District Council, said: “We put our success down to an innovative and prudent approach to financing.

“We run a tight ship at the district council. Working with our subsidiary companies – East Cambs Street Scene and East Cambs Trading company – we are able to provide internal borrowing for schemes such as the leisure centre, waste and recycling services and affordable housing. This means we are able to avoid external borrowing costs which afflict many other councils.”

This year will see some massive projects cross the finish line – like the opening of Lake View Bereavement Centre and the launch of new waste and recycling services.

The council is also continuing to develop affordable homes. It has just released three £100K homes in Kennett and is working with East Cambs Trading Company’s Palace Green Homes to ensure all 27 homes at its Arbour Square development in Ely are affordable.

The amount residents pay to the district council is less than 6% of the total bill.

The remainder is divided between Cambridgeshire County Council, parish, town or city councils, the emergency services and the Combined Authority.

As well as a freeze in Council Tax, the balanced budget takes into account an allocation of £50,000, set aside as match funding to support parish councils for Neighbourhood Plans, as agreed at Full Council in October 2025.

Anna adds: “This balanced budget places us in an enviable position of our peers, allowing us to continue to provide high quality services to our residents.

“But significant change is coming, which in future is likely to impact how much residents pay for their Council Tax.

“Under Local Government Reorganisation existing district and county councils are being replaced with simpler and more efficient unitary authorities.

“Four proposals have been put forward to national government by different councils across the region.

“In East Cambridgeshire, the district council, together with Cambridge City and South Cambridgeshire councils, is supporting option B, which would see East Cambridgeshire become part of a new unitary council with Huntingdonshire, Fenland and Peterborough.

“I encourage you to find out more at www.eastcambs.gov.uk/lgr and have your say by completing the government’s consultation which runs until 26 March.

“A final decision will be made by central government this summer, with the new councils running from April 2028. Whatever option it chooses, we’ll ensure we continue to stand up for residents and deliver excellent services.”

This prestigious accolade celebrates the exceptional range, quality, and importance of the museum’s collection, which spans more than 800 years of stained glass history.

Designated status has been awarded to the museum’s entire collection, including its collection of glass, preparatory designs and cartoons, and specialist tools and sample materials used to make stained glass, recognising it as one of the most significant collections of its kind in the country.

Founded in 1972, The Stained Glass Museum has spent more than five decades championing the artistic, technical and cultural importance of stained glass. This prestigious recognition acknowledges the museum’s leading role in using its collections to promote research, conservation and public engagement with this unique art form. Designated Status is granted to only a small number of non-national museums, galleries, libraries and archives across England and Wales. It is a mark of distinction that demonstrates how collections play a significant role in deepening our understanding of the world and our shared cultural heritage. Museum’s proactive commitment to developing its collections, and its dedication to improving research and interpretation to further the understanding and enjoyment of stained glass for diverse audiences, both now and in the future.

The home side suffered a blow before kick off, losing captain Luke Turner after he broke his fibula in the weeks following the defeat against Bury IIs. Despite the setback, the Tigers started brightly.

With just ten minutes on the clock, Adam Tallack crossed the line for the opening try, with Jake Alsop adding the conversion to give Ely a 7–0 lead. The Tigers doubled their advantage after 22 minutes when Joel Scott Paul touched down, again converted by Alsop, making it 14–0.

Tallack added his second try of the afternoon on the half hour mark, with Alsop converting once more to extend the lead to 21–0. However, Stowmarket responded immediately from the restart with a converted try. Momentum swung quickly as Stowmarket added two further tries before the break, levelling the score at 21–21 and leaving the Tigers stunned at half time.

Stowmarket struck first in the second half, taking the lead through a penalty try, which also saw Ely reduced to 14 men after Declan Wolverson was shown a yellow card. Despite being a man down, the Tigers showed resilience, with Joel Scott Paul scoring his second try of the game to keep Ely within two points.

Stowmarket then added two further tries to move 38–26 ahead, but the Tigers refused to go away. Captain Matt McCarthy crossed for a converted try to reduce the gap to five points. With time running out, Tallack completed his hat trick, and Alsop added the crucial conversion to put Ely back in front.

The Tigers held on to secure a dramatic 40–38 victory, sealing a vital win in front of the home crowd.

This week, the Tigers travel to the Suffolk coast to face Southwold. Maximum points would see Ely close the gap and move above the Suffolk side in the league.

As part of its role as a national Youth Guarantee Trailblazer, the Combined Authority is expanding its skills offer to create more opportunities than ever before. The programme focuses on two key routes into employment: increasing the number of apprenticeships and introducing fully funded internships to help young people take their first step into the world of work.

To support both young people and employers, additional funding and incentives have been introduced.

For the first time, 18–21-year-olds can access fully funded six-week internships. These placements remove the wage cost for employers, making it easier for businesses to offer short-term opportunities where young people can gain experience, build confidence, and demonstrate their potential.

To encourage more apprenticeship opportunities for 16–18-year-olds, the local support grant has been doubled to £4,000. This funding is designed to help local employers create training roles that offer a direct route into skilled employment.

The expanded programme comes at a crucial time. While Cambridgeshire and Peterborough continue to grow, too many young people are still finding it difficult to secure their first job or training opportunity.

Current figures show that 3.9% of 16–17-year-olds in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough are not in education, employment, or training, rising to 5.4% in Peterborough. By increasing access to paid internships and apprenticeships, the Combined Authority aims to reduce these figures and provide clear alternatives to unemployment.

Paul Bristow, Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, said:

“I want to help more young people into good jobs. We know that getting that first foot in the door is often the hardest part, and these changes are about opening that door for as many people as possible.

“This funding will support even more apprenticeships and internships, giving our young people the chance to learn new skills, build their confidence, and move into great careers. It also gives local businesses the practical support they need to bring in new talent and grow their workforce.”

To help deliver these opportunities, the Combined Authority is offering significant financial support to local businesses. Small and medium-sized enterprises can access up to £5,000 in total cash support when hiring a young apprentice, combining local and national grants. Employers can also take on an intern at zero wage cost for six weeks.

As night falls, Ely Cathedral becomes a breathtaking canvas of swirling galaxies, distant planets and abstract interpretations of time, light and creation. The experience invites visitors of all ages to explore humanity’s fascination with space while seeing the Cathedral in a completely new way.

The installation is created by the acclaimed artistic collaboration Luxmuralis, known for transforming historic spaces into powerful, emotionally engaging environments through light, music and narrative.

Following the SPACE light show, visitors can also experience the Star Dome at Ely Cathedral during half term, from 16–21 February 2026.

The Star Dome is a fully immersive planetarium experience that transports audiences into a celestial world of stars, planets and galaxies. Guided by an expert in astronomy and astronautics, visitors will explore constellations and discover the myths and legends associated with the night sky.

On Saturday 21 February, a special session will take place in collaboration with Tiptree Stargazers, with telescopes set up outside the Cathedral to observe astronomical objects in the night sky, weather permitting.

The Star Dome offers a calm, educational and memorable experience for all ages.

Ely Tigers opened the first of three home league fixtures with the visit of Shelford 2s, with both sides looking to pick up valuable points. Once again, the home side were forced into changes to the starting fifteen.

The match began with Ely on the back foot. Shelford were awarded an early penalty and opted to kick for goal from just inside the Ely half, but the effort drifted wide. The visitors soon opened the scoring with their next attack, moving the ball quickly to the wing where they had the overlap to score in the corner. The conversion was missed, giving Shelford a 5–0 lead.

Within ten minutes, Shelford doubled their advantage with a near identical move, again finishing out wide. Another missed conversion made it 10–0. A successful penalty followed shortly after to extend the lead to 13–0, before Shelford crossed once more in the corner, this time adding the conversion to take a 20–0 lead.

Ely responded through Tom Green, who crossed the line early in the half, although Jake Alsop was unable to add the conversion. The visitors quickly secured their bonus point try, but the Tigers hit back again as Green scored his second try, with Alsop converting to bring Ely back into the contest. However, the half ended with a setback for the home side, as both Lory Martin and Green were forced off through injury, prompting another reshuffle.

Shelford struck first in the second half, capitalising on a dropped ball to score. Ely were then reduced to fourteen men after Matt French received a yellow card. While a man down, Shelford extended their lead further.

Ely showed resilience and responded through Mitch Kennett, who went over under the posts, with Alsop adding the conversion to reduce the deficit to 35–19. The Tigers continued to press and were rewarded with their fourth try, securing a bonus point. A strong carry from Matt McCarthy was held up close to the line, but he managed to offload to Coby Guerrero, who dived over to score, bringing the score to 35–26.

As full time approached, Shelford were awarded a penalty and opted to kick for goal. The successful kick sealed the result, with the visitors running out 38–26 winners.

The game got off to the perfect start for the Tigers, with Jake Alsop slotting a penalty inside the opening minutes to give Ely an early lead. However, Bury responded quickly, pushing the Tigers back over the try line from their next attack, adding the conversion to lead 7–3.

Bury continued to apply pressure, skipping tackles to score another converted try and extend their advantage to 14–3. Ely hit back through Josh Flanders, who scored his first try for the senior side, diving over in the corner. Alsop was unable to convert, leaving the score at 14–8.

The visitors regained momentum with a jinking run to cross for another try, though the conversion was missed. Further pressure saw Bury secure their bonus point try and then add another score from left to right, again without converting, to move 24–8 ahead.

From the restart, Bury crossed for their fifth try. Despite missed conversions, Ely responded positively. From close range, Matthew French powered over, with Alsop converting to reduce the deficit to 29–15.

Bury struck again from an Ely line out with a converted try, but there was still time before the break for Ely to respond. Alfie Allen crossed the line, with Alsop adding the conversion to leave the half time score at 36–22. During this period, Bury were reduced to 14 following a yellow card.

Bury struck immediately after the restart, scoring in the corner to extend their lead. They continued to edge the scoreboard towards the 50 point mark with another unconverted try, making it 47–22. A second yellow card reduced Bury to 13 men, and Ely took advantage, with Coby Guerrero crossing for the Tigers’ fourth try to secure a bonus point.

As Ely pushed forward again, a misplaced pass was intercepted and Bury raced the length of the pitch to score, converting the chance. Deep into second half injury time, Bury added two further tries to inflict the Tigers’ heaviest defeat of the season, with the match finishing 67–27 to the visitors.

Next weekend, the Tigers face Stowmarket, currently second in the league.

What entertainment would you like to see performed at your local library this year? That’s the question being asked by the team behind The Library Presents, as members of the public are once again invited to help shape the next season of this much-loved arts and entertainment programme.

For over eight years, thanks to generous support from Arts Council England, The Library Presents has delivered high-quality live entertainment in libraries across the region. Central to the programme is the choosing process, which gives local people a direct say in the events that come to their communities, helping to ensure each season reflects local tastes, interests and ideas.

Taking part in the process is simple. From Thursday 15 January to Monday 16 February, the choosing menu, containing over 50 events, is available online and in participating libraries. People are invited to browse the menu and select up to six performances they would most like to see take place at their local library.

The menu includes a lively mix of music, poetry, theatre, dance, digital, comedy and magic. It features both popular, much-loved artists who have performed as part of The Library Presents before, such as Graffiti Classics and The Zoo That Comes To You, alongside exciting new artists being introduced to the choosing menu for the first time.

The impact of local involvement is clear to audiences. One attendee from last season said: “It’s wonderful to have these events locally.” This simple sentiment reflects a core aim of the programme: bringing exceptional cultural experiences into the heart of everyday communities, shaped by the people who live there.

The home side started brightly, scoring inside the opening five minutes with an unconverted try to take an early 5–0 lead. Ipswich soon doubled their advantage with another unconverted try in the corner, before a third score shortly after, this time converted, pushed the home side 17–0 ahead.

Ely responded well. Jake Alsop broke free before John Surbey finished the move, with Alsop adding the conversion to reduce the deficit. Momentum continued to swing as Luke Turner then ran in unchallenged under the posts, again converted by Alsop, bringing the score back to 17–14 after 22 minutes.

Ipswich regrouped and exploited space down the left hand side, stretching the lead with a series of tries, both converted and unconverted, to take a commanding 36–14 advantage into the half time break.

The hosts struck early in the second half, scoring from a scrum deep in the Tigers half, breaking blindside with the conversion added. As the fog rolled in, the remainder of the game became scrappy with neither side able to fully take control.

Ipswich edged towards the 50 point mark late on, crossing for a final converted try to seal the match, with the game finishing 50–14 to the home side.

The colourful, hand-knitted chicks have become a familiar and much-anticipated sight in the Hospice, its charity shops and at local events during the lead-up to Easter. Each chick is sold to raise vital funds that support compassionate end-of-life care for patients and families across Cambridgeshire.

The charity is now inviting knitters of all abilities to get involved by creating chicks to be sold in the run-up to Easter. A knitting pattern is available via the Hospice’s social media channels, and all handmade chicks should be clearly labelled for community fundraising.

The hub is located in a cabin within the car park of the Wilburton Flame pub and restaurant and is open 7am to 7pm, Monday to Friday.

Bill Hunt, district councillor for the Stretham Ward which includes Wilburton, said:

“The new hub offers residents and passing motorists a service that has been lacking in the village since Covid.
East Cambridgeshire District Council was delighted to be able to provide a £7,000 grant to help get plans off the ground, and it has been a pleasure to attend the opening ceremony and see those plans come to fruition.”

The hub officially opened its doors on Monday 12 January 2026, with representatives from organisations and groups who supported the project attending the opening.

John Attrill, a member of the community hub management committee, said:

“As a community business, all profits will be returning to the village, making this a fantastic asset to the community in more ways than one.

From 2 January 2026, residents have access to more frequent buses, clearer routes and improved connections, making everyday journeys easier and helping communities stay better connected.

As part of these changes, the 9A (Ely Circular) and 125 (Ely to Little Downham) services were withdrawn on 31 December 2025, with new and improved services introduced from 2 January 2026.

Key changes now in place

• Service 9 (Littleport to Ely to Cambridge)
  The service now runs hourly between Littleport and Ely, with buses continuing to Cambridge every two hours. It serves Tesco Ely and connects with other routes at Ely Market Street, improving reliability and accessibility.
• Service 10 (Ely to Little Downham)
  This new hourly service replaces the former 9A and 125 routes. It provides a clearer, more frequent journey through west Ely, Ely Leisure Village, and Little Downham, including coverage of newer housing developments.

These changes follow a short term service arrangement that operated between 1 September and 31 December 2025, allowing time for the development of a more robust and improved network for Ely and surrounding areas.

Paul Bristow said:
“Getting and keeping our region moving is crucial. Reliable bus services matter for work, education and everyday life. I wasn’t prepared to leave people without the connections they rely on, and I’m pleased these improved services are now in place.”

Passengers are advised that the changes may affect how they travel and are encouraged to check routes and timetables before setting off.

Ely Brick Show will be celebrating a love of all things Lego when they return to the city for their
Valentine’s Special in February.

The “Love Bricks” event at the Lantern School on February 7 will be building its way into Lego-lovers’ hearts, promising a bigger, brighter and more creative show than ever before. Offering everything from the bustling lights of a fairground to the timeless charm of Winnie the Pooh, the charity fundraiser, hosted by Ely Brick Show and Friends of the Lantern School (FOTLS), will also boast a mechanised Lego marble run, fun family activities like Robot Wars and Spot the
Minifigure, and dedicated play zones for hands-on fun..

Show organiser Duncan Bridges said: “From War of the Worlds to a roaring football stadium, there’s something to capture every imagination.
“Marvel at vintage trains and planes, enjoy Medieval villages and step inside scenes from Harry Potter and Star Wars. If that’s not enough, we have cat cafes, Belville – and so much more.”
In addition there will be traders selling Lego and other brick-themed goodies, as well as food trucks and refreshments.
Mr Bridges added: “Don’t miss out on the best Lego event in Cambridgeshire.”

One of the standout highlights has been the return of The Orchards’ Wishing Tree, now in its second year. The gifting tree allows individuals to be anonymously nominated for an extra special Christmas present. Recipients may include residents, volunteers, community champions, lonely individuals without relatives, or parents who have been struggling to buy gifts for their children.

Generous donors take a tag from the tree and return with a thoughtful gift, ranging from cosy scarves and books to children’s toys. The initiative has once again proven hugely popular and has been just as successful as its inaugural year.

Festive celebrations have also embraced intergenerational connections, with children from Lantern Preschool visiting residents to take part in Christmas arts and crafts before performing their nativity. The visit created a touching bond between generations and brought smiles to residents and young performers alike.

Music has played a central role throughout the festive period. The home welcomed a range of choirs and musicians, including The Isle Singers, who performed traditional and uplifting Christmas carols. They were joined by the Cambridge University Brass Band and the City of Ely Military Band, whose lively performances filled the home with seasonal cheer.

The celebrations culminated in a lively Christmas party featuring the Band of Ukes, alongside a raffle, craft stalls and plenty of homemade mince pies, enjoyed by residents, relatives and visitors.

Erin Huggins, Assistant Activities Coordinator at The Orchards, which is run by not for profit care organisation Greensleeves Care, said:

“It’s been a busy but truly joyous run up to Christmas. The activities have captured the spirit of the season and reflected the strong sense of community we’ve fostered here at The Orchards. There’s still more to come on Boxing Day, with performances from two Ely Cathedral choristers, followed by a visit from relatives who sing together as the musical duo Gaudete, adding a very special touch to the holiday celebrations.”

These festive events form part of Greensleeves Care’s Warmth of Care winter campaign, which highlights the importance of compassion, connection and practical support for older people during the colder months.

Rebecca Buck, Activities Coordinator at The Orchards, added:

“Warmth of Care aims to help people feel good about care and reinforces the important role our homes play in their local communities. Nearly one in two adults in England increase the support they give to older relatives during winter, making this a key time to spot growing care needs and explore longer term solutions.

“We’re here to support not only our residents and their families, but anyone caring for an older person at home or in the community. Our free online resources are available to everyone, and our doors will be open from 2 to 8 February 2026 for our Big Warm Up week. This will be an opportunity to ask questions, get practical information and explore care options in a relaxed and welcoming environment.”

The Tigers made a fast start, crossing the try line inside the opening five minutes when Joel Scott Paul finished well, with Matt McCarthy adding the conversion. The game settled shortly after, with McCarthy extending the lead through a well-taken penalty.

Returning to the squad, Grant Storey marked his comeback by getting on the scoresheet to push the lead to 15–0. Mitchell Kennett then crossed before the break, giving Ely a commanding 20–0 half-time lead, despite finishing the half with fourteen players.

Early in the second half, Jake Alsop added three more points from the tee. Newmarket responded strongly with two converted tries, reducing the deficit to 23–14 and briefly shifting momentum.

Ely regained control when McCarthy crossed for his own try and converted, restoring a comfortable lead. Although Newmarket managed a late score, the Tigers held firm to see out a deserved 30–21 victory.

As the team heads into the Christmas break, Ely Tigers remain in the bottom two of the table but sit just 2 points off ninth place, with several crucial fixtures to come in January against teams close to them on the table.

Saffron Walden made an immediate impact, scoring a converted try under the posts inside the opening two minutes to take an early seven nil lead. The Tigers regrouped and gradually worked their way back into the contest. In 11 minutes, Walden missed the chance to extend their lead when a penalty drifted just wide of the posts. However, by the 21st minute, the visitors added an unconverted try to move 12-0 ahead.

Walden increased their advantage in the first half stoppage time, finishing off a spell of free flowing rugby with a converted try to lead nineteen nil. From the restart, some positive play from the Tigers saw Mitch Kennett cross the try line following strong work from Jordan Barnes, sending the teams into the break at 19–5.

The second half saw Walden extend their lead further with another converted try, making it 26–5. The momentum shifted when Walden were reduced to fourteen players following a yellow card and Ely took full advantage. The Tigers responded with two quick tries to close the gap to 17–26, reigniting hope among the travelling support.

A penalty in front of the posts allowed Walden to keep the scoreboard ticking over and move to 29–17, but Ely were not finished. Jordan Barnes crossed for the Tigers once more to reduce the deficit to 22–29. Despite continued pressure in the closing stages, time ran out and the referee brought the match to an end.

Ely Tigers will look to build on the positives from this performance as they travel to fifth placed Colchester at the end of November. Please note there will be no match report from this game.

Renowned local land lubber based shanty crew Isle ‘ave a Shanty celebrated their 100th show with a homecoming gig at The Chequers in
Sutton.
Formed in 2019 and made up 6 mates – Stuart Green, Elliott Spray, Andrew Newton, Kevin King, Tony Calladine and Lee Harvey – they have been
sharing their nautical nonsense all over the UK for the last 6 years. In that time, they have released 2 albums and sold-out major venues such as Ely
Cathedral and The Gold Hinde (London), theatres such as The Bigg Theatre and The Secret Garden and playing main stages at some prestigious
festivals.
A spokesman for the band said “we are delighted and humbled to have come this far, from learning a few songs in someone’s gardens to selling out
theatres, all while maintaining the fact that we do it for fun. We love it that so many people want to come and see us and share the shanty
shenanigans, and we’d like to thank everyone that has supported us on our journey”
For their 100th gig, it seemed fitting that the band should return to their home port on the Isle of Ely, and particularly to Sutton, where half the band
live. On Friday night, The Chequers regulars and visitors alike were treated to a night of grog, noggins and a drop of Nelson’s Blood and the night was
made all the more special when landlord Harry Price presented the band with a special cake celebrating the landmark!

The first 2 Sundays are dedicated to care homes and respite centres whilst the 3rd Sunday sees them visiting A&E depts, ambulance and fire stations throughout Cambridgeshire.

They will be visiting The Orchards, Lily House, Vera James House in Ely, Laburnum Lodge in Littleport & Soham Lodge Care Home in Soham. They will also be stopping off at Waitrose and Tesco in Ely to thank them for donating to our cause, now in it’s 9th consecutive year.

They are asking if you can donate by sponsoring a Christmas Lunch for someone, or by volunteering in one of the many ways available this year. Ely Community Lunches is a charity that puts on catering events in the City for those who are in need. Last Christmas they provided a sit down three course lunch and a present for ninety people in two venues in the City and delivered eighty meals and gifts to people at home alone.

This year they will be welcoming people at The Lighthouse and Ely Methodist Church on Christmas Day for sit down meals for up to seventy people who might otherwise be alone or in need.

On Christmas Eve our volunteers will be out and about delivering meals to people in the City and neighbouring villages.  Johanna Partridge, from Ely Community Lunches said “As you can imagine that takes a lot of drivers on Christmas Eve to get the lunch packs and gifts safely to people’s homes”.

Tickets for the Christmas Day lunch cost only  £10 but for those who may not be able to manage this, please contact the team by phone or email and they will be happy to help you.

Little Miracles, a charity that supports families with children that have additional needs, disabilities or life limiting conditions, was one of the successful applicants in the last round of grants.

Michelle King, CEO of Little Miracles, explains: “The grant funding has helped provide for the venue costs of our youth club in Littleport, which is specifically designed for children aged 8 and over with additional needs. The club provides a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment where young people can relax, make friends, and build confidence.

“With few opportunities locally for children with additional needs to access youth provision, our club helps reduce isolation, supporting positive mental health, and gives both the children and their families a much-needed sense of belonging.

“Our weekly club offers a wide range of activities such as arts and crafts, games, sensory play, life skills sessions, and themed events, all delivered in a space adapted to suit a variety of needs.

“We welcome families with disabled children from across the East Cambs district, with 15 to 30 people attending each week, which demonstrates the ongoing demand for a service like ours.”

Successful applicants in the last round of grants also included Stretham Youth Centre for their Youth Breakout 25 life and social skills development club; and PosAbility, to provide chair-based exercise sessions for people living with long-term neurological conditions, such as strokes, Parkinson’s, and reduced mobility.

Councillor Julia Huffer, Chair of the Operational Services Committee, said: “This grant enables community groups in East Cambs to offer new and existing support and services to ensure our residents feel included in activities.

“Receiving this grant can be the extra boost a local community group needs to successfully deliver their projects or launch an exciting new initiative. We would urge community groups to apply to the fund for their projects or events.”

The East Cambridgeshire Community Fund will be open to applications between 31 October and 12 December 2025.

Amy Royal, Head of Events said, “We wanted to bring some subtle changes to the event both in terms of aesthetics, attractions and exhibitors and we hope this has been achieved. 25% of our stall holders are new to the Christmas Fair and we have expanded the outdoor areas to ensure those who were unable to get tickets to the main event inside the building, can still come and browse around some stalls, soak up the seasonal ambiance of the Festive Village, and experience a ride on the vintage carousel or the observation wheel. This event has been successfully running for twelve years, and we hope will be a picture-perfect start to the festive season for many “.

The Festive Village in the Cathedral grounds has also seen some changes with an extended marquee to host over 90 exhibitors and food vendors. Decorated with festoon lights, trees and the vintage carousel, the outside areas in the grounds will beautifully complement the main event located inside Ely’s magnificent Cathedral.

As always, the Christmas Fair is about enjoying time with family and friends. The beautifully restored Victorian carousel will be located on the Cathedral green providing nostalgic rides on an original fairground horse. Inside the Cathedral there are over 80 stalls, music entertainment and an opportunity to take a break and enjoy a glass of mulled wine or festive fizz in the Lady Chapel. Outside, the Festive Village will be hosting great selection of gourmet
artisan food and drink vendors.

It is worth noting that remaining tickets for the main event inside the Cathedral are limited and, while some sessions are already sold out. other sessions are still available but need to be booked online.

The Tigers started brightly, with Tom Green crossing for the opening try and Matt McCarthy adding the extras. Luke Turner then powered over for a second, extending the lead to 14-0. A handling error gave YM a way back, narrowing the score to 14-5.

Ely responded strongly from a lineout deep in YM territory, with Lee Thompson crashing over and McCarthy converting to make it 21-5. YM struck back with two quick tries — one from a fortunate bounce after a clearance kick — cutting the gap to just two points at the break, 21-19.

The second half saw both sides battle hard for territory. YM edged ahead with an unconverted try before Ely’s Jordan Barnes went over in the corner, McCarthy narrowly missing the conversion. An intercepted pass gifted YM another converted try, taking them 31-26 ahead.

With time running out, Ely showed their resilience as Turner grabbed his second try of the afternoon. McCarthy’s conversion nudged the Tigers in front 33-31. But in dramatic fashion, YM were awarded a penalty in added time — successfully kicking three points to snatch a 34-33 victory.

By achieving ERS Bronze, the council acknowledges the unique skills and experiences that members of the Armed Forces community bring and is committed to valuing these contributions during recruitment.

Cllr Martin Goodearl, district councillor for Littleport and the council’s Armed Forces Covenant champion, said: “I was proud to be part of the ceremony in September 2024 when we signed the Armed Forces Covenant, re-affirming the council’s original 2011 commitment.

“As a former member of the Armed Forces I understand the challenges of reintegrating into civilian life. Knowing that there are employers who recognise and value the transferable skills and experience of the Armed Forces community is truly invaluable.”

The council’s pledge under the Armed Forces Covenant extends to recruitment practices, ensuring it remains Armed Forces-friendly and open to employing reservists, service leavers and veterans (including those who are wounded, injured or sick), cadet instructors and military spouses/partners.

The council is working towards having a presence on both the Career Transition Partnership (CTP) platform for service leavers and Forces Families Jobs (FFJ), a free tri-service online platform for family members of currently serving UK military personnel, offering employment, training, and volunteering opportunities.

Tommy Kelly, Armed Forces Covenant Partnership Coordinator, added: “Achieving the Bronze Award under the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme is a testament to the council’s ongoing dedication to the Armed Forces community.

Teams from Ely St John’s Community Primary School, Ely St Mary’s Church of England Junior School, Isle of Ely Primary School, Robert Arkenstall Primary School and Wilburton Church of England Primary School competed in a lively round-robin football tournament for Years 5 and 6.

Ten Young Leaders from Ely College supported the event, helping with refereeing, scoring and warm-up sessions, adding to the professional feel of the morning.

There was plenty of skill and sportsmanship on display from all teams. The tournament came down to the final match, with Ely St John’s securing the win against Robert Arkenstall to claim the Ely girls’ football trophy. Isle of Ely Primary School finished runners-up, narrowly ahead of Robert Arkenstall in third place.

Medals and the winning cup were presented to Ely St John’s, while one player from each school received a Player of the Tournament medal for outstanding teamwork and spirit.

It was a brilliant morning of primary school girls’ football in Ely, celebrating teamwork, friendship and community sport.

St Andrew’s Church, Witchford, marked the Harvest Festival with a joyful three-course lunch held on Sunday 5 October 2025 in St Andrew’s Hall.

The event was well attended, with guests enjoying a delicious meal and warm company. One participant shared that it was her first time joining a church event and that she looked forward to coming again.

Church Warden Rosemary Westwell said:

“Thanks must go to the splendid team who voluntarily produced this meal. The food was equal, if not better, than any restaurant and without these hard-working volunteers, spending the last few days in preparation, it would not have been possible.”

The church continues to offer a warm welcome to all, with many community events taking place throughout the year.

The Rotary Club of Ely welcomed Michael Ling to its meeting on Thursday 2 October at Ely Bowls Club, where he gave an engaging and informative talk on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Michael, a former teacher, was diagnosed with ADHD as an adult and left his teaching career eight years ago to become a full-time coach supporting children and adults with the condition. He explained that ADHD is an invisible disability affecting around 5% of the population, though many remain undiagnosed.

There are three recognised types of ADHD – Inattentive, Hyperactive-Impulsive and Combined – with symptoms that can include difficulty focusing, fidgeting, restlessness, or impulsive behaviour. Michael highlighted that ADHD has a strong genetic link, with parents who have the condition facing up to a 30% chance of passing it on to their children.

While untreated ADHD can impact wellbeing and reduce life expectancy, Michael emphasised the many positives, including creativity, sensitivity, and entrepreneurial drive. In fact, people with ADHD are three times more likely to start their own business, often thriving in dynamic and innovative environments.

Michael also spoke about current challenges in accessing diagnosis and treatment, noting that waiting times in the UK can vary greatly. However, patients in England have a legal right to choose their provider for non-emergency elective care, which can sometimes speed up the process.

The scheme, delivered by East Cambridgeshire District Council and funded through the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority’s Rural England Capital Growth Fund, closes for Expressions of Interest at midnight on Thursday 23 October 2025.

Funding can be used to create or safeguard jobs, bring new products to market, invest in technology, improve productivity or adopt new processes.

The programme is open to existing SME and micro businesses based within the district with a turnover under £1 million.

Applicants should have a clear business plan that shows:

• how the business will grow
• how the grant will support this growth
• where relevant, how funding will support job creation including apprenticeships
• how the business will respond to market changes
• a clear delivery plan for the project
• how the funding will benefit the wider local economy, such as the supply chain

If approved, applicants will be invited to submit a Full Application by midnight on Friday 21 November 2025, with successful businesses notified after 12 December 2025.

Grants range from £5,000 to £15,000, covering up to 60% of total eligible project costs.

Cllr Alan Sharp, Chair of the Council’s Finance and Assets Committee, said:

“We are so pleased to once again offer support to East Cambridgeshire businesses and I would encourage eligible organisations to apply before the deadline.
We are particularly keen to hear from enterprises that want to grow their offering or expand, helping to support job creation including apprenticeships and invest in new technology and innovation.

The Combined Authority has a key role in boosting apprenticeship numbers across all sectors, supporting local businesses with the skilled workers they need to grow, and helping more residents access well-paid, sustainable careers.

Businesses across the region have reported difficulties finding suitably qualified electricians, while many young people are struggling to secure apprenticeships that would allow them to enter the trade.

To help bridge this gap, the Mayor has joined forces with the Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA) to launch the new Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Electrotechnical Training and Careers Alliance. This innovative partnership brings together ECA members, training providers, and the Combined Authority to create new opportunities for local people to train and work in the electrical industry.

Paul Bristow said:

“We need more electricians and I’m taking action. My mission is to bring the right people together to get more people in this region into great jobs and careers. This is a fantastic example of that work in action. Electrical careers offer so much potential and this innovative alliance will open doors for more local people.”

Paul Leonard, of Cambridge-based ECA Member Munro Building Services Ltd, added:

“The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough region needs many more qualified, skilled electricians to achieve its huge economic potential. As local employers and strong supporters of high-quality training, we and other ECA members welcome the Mayor’s commitment to convene industry, education, the Combined Authority and the LSIP to address the opportunities and challenges our region faces together.”

Charlotte Horobin, CEO of Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce, said:

“The Electrotechnical Training and Careers Alliance is a fantastic example of collaboration in action. We are delighted to be working with a key representative body, the ECA, alongside local employers and the Combined Authority, to tackle these important skills challenges in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.”

The first step for the Alliance will be to create a plan of action to build a pipeline of skilled workers. The group will also contribute to the region’s Local Skills Improvement Plan, led by the Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce, which aims to improve local training and employment pathways.

To maintain the number of electricians required, annual apprentice recruitment needs to reach at least 5% of the existing workforce each year. Currently, the average in England is below 4%. Many classroom-based routes into the trade are also failing to transition learners into employment. The new Alliance will help to tackle this broken pipeline and ensure the region’s electrical sector continues to grow.

Seven teams from local schools — Ely St John’s Community Primary, Ely St Mary’s Church of England Junior, Isleham Church of England Primary, Isle of Ely Primary, Little Thetford Church of England Primary, and Wilburton Church of England Primary — took part in the Years 5 and 6 boys football tournament.

Played in a round-robin format, every team faced each other in 15-minute matches, with ten Young Leaders from Ely College volunteering as referees and scorekeepers.

After a series of close and exciting games, St John’s emerged as the overall winners, taking home the tournament cup, while St Mary’s 2s finished as runners-up. In addition, one player from each school was recognised for showing outstanding sportsmanship and received a medal.

Tournament organiser Julia Gilbert said:

“It was great to see the boys playing some excellent football. There was a fantastic team spirit shown by all the teams, and the boys looked like they were really enjoying themselves.”

This was a demanding concert for the orchestra, but one they delivered with confidence and precision. Under Steve Bingham’s baton, the strong, warm resonance of the strings filled the Cathedral, with expressive phrasing that held the audience spellbound.

Arnold’s Peterloo Overture vividly told the story of the battle for democracy, its dramatic contrasts depicting both the horror of the 1819 massacre and the triumph of eventual reform. The music’s thunderous drums and tense dissonances captured the chaos and tragedy of that day, balanced by passages of calm and resolution. It was a powerful reminder of why Arnold, who also composed the scores for The Bridge on the River Kwai and The Inn of the Sixth Happiness, is so widely admired for his storytelling through music.

Vaughan Williams’s Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis provided a moment of pure transcendence. Its ancient harmonies, set within a lush, spacious soundscape, were woven together by the interplay between the full string orchestra, a smaller ‘echo’ ensemble, and a string quartet. The result was ethereal and deeply moving, with the orchestra perfectly capturing the composer’s trademark sense of serenity and timeless beauty.

Elgar’s Symphony No. 1 rounded off the evening in grand style. Complex and emotionally rich, the work’s shifting moods — from playfulness and rhythmic vitality to moments of immense grandeur — were handled with poise and energy. The orchestra’s performance was both powerful and tender, leaving the audience with Elgar’s stirring melodies resonating long after the final note.

The concert was enhanced by excellent programme notes written by Jeremy Harmer, which added further depth to the evening’s experience.

Ely Sinfonia’s next major concert, Heroism, Harmony and Triumph, featuring works by Beethoven and Walton, will take place at Ely Cathedral on Saturday 2 May 2026 at 7.30pm

On Thursday 25 September 2025, members of the Rotary Club of Ely gathered at Ely Bowls Club to hear an insightful talk from Sharon Kindleysides, Trustee of the Prickwillow Drainage Engine Museum.

An engineer by profession, Sharon works in Intelligent Transport Systems and shared a fascinating look into the story behind the drainage of the Fens — from its early beginnings to the technological developments that transformed the landscape we know today.

Dating back to the reign of Henry VIII, the monasteries once provided the manpower needed to keep rivers clear. Following their dissolution, drainage became an ongoing challenge. It wasn’t until the 17th century, when Dutch engineer Cornelius Vermuyden introduced innovative land reclamation techniques, that major progress was made. His work included straightening rivers and creating new channels and washes such as the Bedford Level, dramatically improving water flow.

The introduction of steam power in 1831 led to the first pumping station at Prickwillow, fuelled by coal brought up the river from King’s Lynn — a journey that took an entire day to reach full steam pressure. Diesel engines arrived in 1924, followed by electricity in 1958, which remained in use until 1982.

Today, the Prickwillow Drainage Engine Museum continues to preserve and celebrate this important part of local history. The museum has expanded over the years and now houses a wide collection of historic engines. To raise funds for its future, the museum hosts a range of popular community events, including engine birthdays, Science Day, tractor runs, classic car shows and educational visits for schools.

Although the museum closes during winter due to heating costs, it reopens at Easter, and visitors can travel there on the Tiger on Demand bus from Ely Market Square. The service runs Monday to Saturday for just £2 per journey or free for senior citizens with a bus pass. Bookings can be made via the museum’s website.

The Rotary Club of Ely hosted a Tea in a Tent fundraising afternoon at St Mary’s Church Hall on Wednesday 17 September, in aid of ShelterBox, an international disaster relief charity that provides emergency shelter and essentials to families affected by disaster and conflict.

Visitors enjoyed homemade cakes, sandwiches, and refreshments while learning how ShelterBox transforms lives around the world. Each ShelterBox contains a family-sized tent and a selection of items designed to help families survive and rebuild — including solar lights, water storage and purification equipment, thermal blankets, and cooking utensils.

The Rotary Club of Ely has supported ShelterBox for many years, donating several boxes to help people in crisis. ShelterBox was first launched in 2000 as a Millennium Project by the Rotary Club of Helston-Lizard in Cornwall and became a registered charity in 2003. It continues to be a powerful example of how communities can come together to make a global impact.

“The Junior Makers Market is all about helping young people gain confidence, learn new skills and experience what it’s like to run a small business,” said organisers Ange and Gav. “We would love your support, as we truly believe young people can gain valuable life skills, confidence and financial literacy through experiences such as this.”

Visitors can expect a friendly, family-focused event filled with creativity and community spirit. Entry and parking are free, and refreshments will be available throughout the day.

There are still a few stall spaces available, priced at £5 per stall, which includes a table and two chairs. To keep things fair, the organisers aim to avoid duplicate stall types, so young makers are encouraged to book early and confirm their category.

After last week’s loss to Shelford, Ely Tigers faced further injury challenges ahead of their home fixture against Southwold RFC. Despite the setbacks, the Tigers started brightly, playing with renewed pace and determination in front of the home crowd at the Pocock + Shaw Ground.

Ely took an early lead when they turned over a Southwold lineout, with Alfie Allen diving over for the opening try. Jake Alsop added the conversion to make it 7-0. Southwold hit back quickly, capitalising on a defensive error to score and convert, before Ely responded through Scott Macfarlane, who was driven over from a lineout. Alsop again added the extras.

The visitors levelled the score with another converted try, but Ely soon regained control when John Surby was brought down just short of the line. The referee awarded a penalty try, also reducing Southwold to 14 men.

Southwold refused to back down, breaking from deep inside their own half to score under the posts and draw level again. They then took the lead with a quick counterattack following an Ely restart, though the conversion missed. Alsop reduced the gap with a well-placed penalty to make it a two-point game.

In the closing stages, Southwold added a converted try and a penalty to extend their lead. Ely kept pressing and were rewarded late on as Allen crossed again in the corner, with Matt McCarthy converting to bring the final score to 39–31.

Despite the defeat, the Tigers showed grit and attacking flair, demonstrating their ability to compete strongly even with a reshuffled side.

A change in kick-off time saw Ely Tigers travel to face Shelford Nomads for a 12:30 start. With injuries already mounting, the Tigers were forced to make further squad adjustments – and within minutes, they lost Mitchell Kennett to injury.

Shelford struck early, scoring a converted try within five minutes. They doubled their lead on 35 minutes and then crossed again straight from the restart to go 21-0 ahead.

Ely showed real determination before the break. Matt McCarthy set up Luke Turner for the Tigers’ first try, converted by Jake Alsop. Moments later, Alfie Allen powered over, with Alsop again adding the extras to close the gap to 21-14. In first-half stoppage time, Shelford added another try – this time unconverted – for a 26-14 half-time lead. During the first period, Ely’s Carlos Diaz Meco joined Kennett on the injury list, both players later heading to Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

Shelford kept control in the second half, adding a series of well-worked tries. A cross-field kick found space in the corner, followed by another converted effort on the hour mark. Further pressure led to two more scores – one from open play and another from a line-out drive under the posts – extending the home side’s advantage to 47-14.

Ely refused to give up and were rewarded late on when Lee Thompson dived over for their third try. Despite chasing a bonus point in the closing minutes, the Tigers ran out of time as Shelford claimed a 47-21 win.

After a two-week break, Ely Tigers returned to league action at the Pocock + Shaw Ground, hosting Ipswich RFC in difficult weather conditions brought by Storm Amy. Despite a strong start, the Tigers fell short as Ipswich claimed a 24–10 win.

Ely struck first when Matt McCarthy crossed the line following a well-worked team move. His conversion attempt drifted wide, leaving the hosts five points ahead. Ipswich were soon reduced to 14 players, but Ely couldn’t make the numerical advantage count.

The visitors responded by moving the ball wide to exploit space and scored their opening try, successfully converting to take the lead. In the second half, Ipswich extended their advantage with another unconverted try, then capitalised on a loose Ely pass deep in the visitors’ half to run in a third.

Ely rallied as John Surby appeared to have grounded the ball, but the referee ruled it held up. From the ensuing restart, Ely’s pressure paid off as McCarthy powered over for his second try. Any hopes of a late comeback were dashed when Ipswich added one final try to close out a 24–10 victory.

Though the result didn’t go their way, the Tigers displayed grit and flashes of attacking promise in blustery conditions.

Ely Tigers travelled to Stowmarket for the first time since the 2017/18 season, making several squad changes for the challenge ahead. Despite periods of strong attacking play, the hosts proved clinical, claiming a 52-30 victory in a free-scoring encounter.

Early on, Ely were awarded a penalty but couldn’t convert as Jake Alsop’s kick drifted wide. Stowmarket capitalised soon after, breaking through for a converted try. Ely hit back with a converted effort from Alsop to level the scoreline, but a misplaced pass allowed the home side to add a second converted try and move 14-7 ahead.

Alsop narrowed the gap with a penalty before Stowmarket crossed again. Another home try followed, the conversion rebounding from the upright, before a thunderstorm halted play. When the match resumed, Alsop added three more points for Ely, yet Stowmarket ended the half ahead 26-13 after a late penalty.

Straight after the restart, Stowmarket extended their lead with another converted try. Ely responded impressively: a perfectly weighted kick from Tom Gunbie set up Alfie Allen and Craig Rugg in the corner, then Declan Wolverson powered over for a second. With ten minutes left, Lory Martin scored under the posts, Gunbie converting to make it 33-30 and keep hopes alive.

Late interceptions, however, sealed it for the hosts, who ran in two more tries to reach the half-century.

Although the Tigers couldn’t secure the win, the match showcased their attacking flair and determination, promising an exciting season ahead.

Within ten minutes, Coby Guerrero crossed the line for Ely’s first try of the season, confidently converted by Jake Alsop. West Norfolk quickly replied with a breakaway try but failed to add the extras. A well-taken penalty from Alsop extended the Tigers’ lead to 10–5, yet West again found a gap in the Ely defence to edge ahead.

Before half-time, Mitch Kennett powered through the visitors’ back line to score, with Alsop adding the conversion to send Ely into the break 17–12 ahead.

The second half remained tightly contested, neither side able to dominate possession. The turning point came on 55 minutes when Charlie Coupland was shown a yellow card. While reduced to fourteen men, Ely conceded a converted try, allowing West Norfolk to take a 19–17 lead — a scoreline that held until the final whistle.

Despite the narrow loss, the Tigers’ renewed energy and teamwork set a positive tone for the season ahead.

He will have served as the spiritual and executive head of the Cathedral since 2012, and his retirement will mark the end of over 40 years of stipendiary ordained ministry, including 14 years at Ely.

Reflecting on his forthcoming retirement Mark says “It has been the most enormous privilege and joy to be the Dean of Ely for the past thirteen years. The Cathedral is a vibrant Christian community of which I have been proud to be a part. It has also been wonderful to share in the feast of activities that happen – wonderful exhibitions, concerts and fairs. Above all it is the people who worship, work and volunteer here that make it the very special place that it is, and who I will miss the most. I will be always grateful for the support of everyone through the years I have been here and there’s a particularly good team in place across the board at the moment. It is the longest I have lived anywhere, so when July next year comes I will miss Ely enormously, but I am sure the time is right and I will watch from a relatively short distance as you continue ‘joyfully proclaiming the love of God, in worship, outreach, welcome and care’!”

In addition to guiding the Cathedral community through the pandemic, he has successfully overseen the complexity of a Dean’s responsibilities with a quiet skill and confidence. While mission and ministry have been at the very centre of his accomplishments, his openness to new ideas have significantly expanded the Cathedral’s arts and events programme and his support of environmental policies gained Ely the Gold A Rocha UK award. His encouragement to invest in
technology and support of good financial management have all contributed to ensuring the Cathedral is in a much stronger position under his tenure and in an excellent state of repair.

The Rt Revd Dr Dagmar Winter, Bishop of Huntingdon and Acting Bishop of Ely, said “Mark has given many years of faithful and distinguished service to Ely Cathedral, Diocese and to the wider Church.

His steady leadership, deep love for cathedral worship, stewardship of the amazing building and care for its people have left a lasting legacy. He is an excellent colleague to me and I pray God’s richest blessing on him and Katy during their last year in Ely as they prepare for their move.”

Francis Burkitt, the Senior Non Executive Member of Chapter at Ely, praised the Dean’s leadership. ‘Mark has been an exceptional leader of the Cathedral, its congregation and its community for the past 14 years, and over that period has created and strengthened a first-class culture within all of the team who contribute to the much-loved ‘Ship of the Fens’

The Dean’s last day at the Cathedral will be Sunday 28 June with an official retirement date of 31 July 2026.

The hospital is such an important part of our community. From the very first birth, back in 1940, to the care it provides today, it has been there for almost every family in Ely at some point or another. The Charitable Trust raises money to make a real difference for patients and staff by funding extras that go beyond the NHS, such as specialist equipment, welcoming spaces and better facilities.

Over the next year, we will be working closely with the Trust to raise awareness and funds for projects that really matter, including improvements to the urgent treatment centre and children’s services.

Now in its 8^th year, the Ely Hero Awards continue to shine a spotlight on those whose compassion, dedication, and courage enrich our community. Finalists were recognised across 11 categories, each highlighting acts of generosity, resilience, and inspiration that have touched countless lives.

Guests were welcomed to the sparkling evening by Host, David Learner, who paid heartfelt tribute to the local heroes being honoured. Among the distinguished attendees was His Majesty’s Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire, Mr Daniel Schumann MBE, who joined in celebrating the outstanding contributions of this year’s finalists and introduced the prestigious award for THE Ely Hero 2025.

Winner of THE Ely Hero Award was Robert Barnes who has dedicated the last 10 years of his life to raise money for charities following the death his beloved wife, Lisa. He raises money for local charities and in particular the Arthur Rank Hospice, a very special place that can touch anyone’s life at any moment.

The night was filled with warmth, gratitude, and joy. A delicious dinner was shared by all, followed by an electrifying performance from the talented 4D Dance School, whose high-energy routines brought the room to life and set the perfect tone for the celebrations.

Speaking about the evening, organiser, Luke Smith said:

“The Ely Hero Awards are about celebrating the very best of our community – people who quietly and selflessly make life better for others. Tonight, we have seen kindness and strength blossom, and we are proud to share in these moments of recognition.”

The Ely Hero Awards 2025 not only recognised the remarkable efforts of the finalists but also reminded everyone present of the power of community spirit, and the importance of celebrating those who go above and beyond to help others bloom.

This year’s chosen charity was CAMSAR – Lowland Rescue, an incredible volunteer team who search for missing and vulnerable people in our community. Thanks to a raffle and a fabulous charity auction, over £1,900 was raised to help support their life-saving work. An overwhelming supply of prizes were donated by incredible local shops and businesses.

The apples, arranged by club member Chris Lee, were gathered by Rotarians Richard Tyler, Viv Doji, Richard Riley, Mike Axford, Kate Devine, Phil Smith, Lilian Umeakunne (who also took the photos), and Benard Arnold. They were joined by Caroline and Bill Hammill, making it a real community effort.

Once picked, members set to work peeling, stewing and bagging the apples ready for freezing. These will later be thawed, filled into individual trays, and topped with pre-cooked crumble to create the much-loved apple crumbles sold at the Fayre.

Ely’s Apple and Harvest Fayre (previously known as Apple Day) takes place on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th October 2025, from 10am to 4pm each day. Visitors can look forward to a true taste of Ely, with the famous Rotary apple crumbles at the heart of the celebrations.

Rosemary Westwell, on behalf of Ely Rotary Club, said:

“This annual tradition brings our members and the community together in such a positive way. It’s hard work, but the results are worth it when we see the smiles on people’s faces enjoying a slice of Ely’s autumn harvest.”

New members are always welcome to join the Rotary Club of Ely, although, as members joked, “it’s unlikely they’ll be asked to pick 100 kilos of apples more than once a year!”

The event was officially opened by the Mayor of Ely, Councillor Mike Banyard, and his wife, Mayoress Mrs Helen Banyard, and brought together families, friends and the local community in the not-for-profit care home’s beautifully decorated gardens.

Local favourite Banjo Man entertained guests with George Formby classics before leading a cheerful rendition of Happy Birthday for resident Hilda Kempton, who marked her milestone 103rd birthday on the day.

The fete was packed with activities including games, face-painting, a craft stall and a raffle. Visitors also included friends from St Mary’s Christ Church. Refreshments were available from the cake stall, while The Orchards’ kitchen team created a special birthday cake for Hilda, presented by the Mayor and Mayoress.

Funds raised from the event will go towards more musical activities, entertainment and trips for residents at the home.

Rebecca Buck, Activities Coordinator at The Orchards, run by not-for-profit care group Greensleeves Care, said:

“It was a fabulous traditional summer fete, and we are so grateful to the Ely community for their generosity in donating prizes, vouchers and their time. The event was a wonderful success, with so much positive feedback from residents and families.

“Celebrating Hilda’s 103rd birthday made the day even more special, and we were delighted to have the Mayor and Mayoress with us to mark the occasion.”

“Events like this not only raise valuable funds but also greatly benefit residents’ wellbeing. Being outdoors, enjoying music and connecting with the community are all so important.

These works form part of an ongoing commitment to preserve and protect this nationally important site, ensuring it remains safe and accessible for future generations. The planned repairs are vital to address wear and stress on the original timber framework of the building, dating back to the 13th century.

The conservation project has been carefully designed to respect the house’s rich heritage, and the team will be working closely with specialist contractors experienced in historic building preservation to ensure the eventual closure is as short-term as possible. The service will still relocate to Sessions House (Ely’s Court House) and a date will be released in due course.

Please note all tours and admissions to Oliver Cromwell’s House will now resume, with winter hours starting November 1^st (11am – 4pm). The Visit Ely team will continue to offer visitor support, provide local information, and retail experiences as normal.

Mr Axten-Higgs joins from Ridgefield Primary School in Cambridge, where he has served as Headteacher, leading a committed team focused on delivering high-quality education and supporting pupil wellbeing. He will also oversee Downham Feoffees Primary Academy (DFPA) in Little Downham, working closely with Mrs Benita Sherrington, Head of School at DFPA, to provide strong, collaborative leadership for both schools.

Both are part of Meridian Trust – a growing family of 32 schools across Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire and beyond. LCPS and DFPA have worked together for a number of years, sharing expertise and resources, and will now continue to strengthen those links under Mr Axten-Higgs’ leadership.

Chris said: “I am delighted to be starting as Head Teacher at Lantern Community Primary School. Both LCPS and DFPA have such welcoming communities and I am excited to get to know our children, families and staff.

On Thursday 28 August, the Rotary Club of Ely welcomed Sarah Grix from Alzheimer’s Research UK to Ely Bowls Club for an insightful talk on dementia research and prevention.

Dementia in the UK

Sarah explained that Alzheimer’s Research UK is the country’s leading dementia research charity, working towards finding a cure. At present, around one million people in the UK are living with dementia, which costs the economy an estimated £43 billion a year through hospital care and the loss of earnings for carers and partners.

Dementia is caused by the build-up of amyloid and tau proteins in the brain. These proteins damage and eventually kill brain cells and their connections. Silent changes occur years before symptoms appear, making them irreversible by the time they are diagnosed.

Common symptoms include:

• memory loss
• confusion of time and place
• difficulty speaking
• hallucinations and delusions
• personality changes
• reduced social awareness
• neglect of personal care

At present there are no medicines that can cure dementia.

Reducing the risk

While there is no cure yet, Sarah highlighted that lifestyle choices can make a difference. Risk can be reduced by up to 43% through:

• keeping blood pressure under control
• not smoking
• following a balanced diet
• staying physically active
• joining social groups or stimulating the brain with activities
• drinking fewer than 14 units of alcohol a week

Research and funding

Alzheimer’s Research UK collaborates with universities across the UK. In July alone, the charity funded £4 million of research. Last year, it raised £60 million, with 98% of funding coming from public donations, regular givers, and gifts left in wills.

Currently, for every four researchers studying cancer, there is just one working on dementia – underlining the urgent need for further investment.

Wise words are being shared across generations in Ely this summer thanks to a heart-warming initiative at The Orchards care home.

Residents including Jean Grimes, Pamela Maidment and Mary Chandler enjoyed an afternoon in the Garden Room potting herbs for their garden while reflecting on life’s lessons. As part of the Seeds of Wisdom project, they wrote down advice to be shared with family, friends and the wider community.

The activity, run by non-profit Greensleeves Care, celebrates the experiences of residents and how their words can help younger generations make wise decisions and lead fulfilled lives.

Some of the advice included:

• Hilda Kempton, 102: “Always listen to your elders – even though I didn’t!”
• Mary Chandler, 93: “Always be kind and remember to stay humble.”
• Pamela Hicks, 78: “Follow your dreams. I trained as a secretary through evening classes and went on to work in radio astronomy.”
• Pamela Maidment: “Laugh and the world laughs with you. Laugh often.”
• Jean Grimes: “Always be grateful for what you have.”

Rebecca Buck, Activities Co-ordinator at The Orchards, said:
“Our residents have experienced so much throughout their lives and asking them to share their nurturing tips – their seeds of wisdom – was incredibly inspiring. It was also another opportunity for a therapeutic activity together.”

The Seeds of Wisdom project forms part of Greensleeves Care’s nationwide Get Care Wise initiative, which helps families learn more about care options before a crisis arises.

Rebecca added:
“Summer is the perfect opportunity for getting care wise. Families often have a bit more time to think about the additional support an older loved one might need in future. Activities like Seeds of Wisdom remind us that knowledge is power and that it pays to plan ahead where possible.”

Sumaya grew up in Southern Alberta, Canada, where her Jamaican heritage made her feel like an outsider in her early years. She became involved with the Rotary Youth Leadership Award Scheme, raised $25,000 for ShelterBox, and took part in three family exchanges, where she encouraged young people and learnt Spanish.

Her career has included work as a Climate Consultant and in environmental research. With the support of a Rotary Global Scholarship, Sumaya studied at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. Her dissertation, “How Colonial Education in Jamaica Keeps Rural Boys Locked Out of Learning”, highlighted the urgent need for investment in rural schools, including library funding, school equipment and technology.

Now working in International Development in London, Sumaya said she felt privileged to study at Cambridge with the help of Rotary and emphasised the importance of continuing support for education in under-resourced areas.

Looking ahead, Ely Rotary is excited to welcome a new Global Scholar, Leonard Wang, who will arrive in August/September to pursue an MBA in Health and Public Health.

The club’s next fundraising event, Tea in a Tent, will take place on Tuesday 17 September, 3–5pm at St Mary’s Hall, Ely, where tea, cake and donations will be warmly received.

The gateway underpass at the Ely Leisure Village has been adorned with colour and flair by students in Years 9 and 10 from the college.

Street artist Kilo, lead artist at Splash & Dash Creations Ltd, worked with the students to teach street art skills and facilitate the development of the mural, with students painting their designs directly on the underpass wing near Costa coffee.

The installation was phase two of a successful and exciting partnership project with young people. The collaborative project has involved key partners City of Ely Council, Ely Community College, East Cambridgeshire District Council and Cambridgeshire County Council.

Lis Every, Chair of the East Cambs Community Safety Partnership said: “Working with the students in the design and installation of the artwork has been inspirational and seeing them engaging fully in the project has been so rewarding.

“Our thanks go to the City of Ely Council for their continued support and funding towards the project.”

Cllr Mike Banyard, The Mayor of Ely, added: “Engaging with young people and seeing their collaborative approach to claiming their local area as a place to be both inspired by and proud of has been a positive experience for everyone involved.

“The council welcomed the opportunity to continue to fund and support this worthwhile project.”

Phase one last year saw artwork installed inside the underpass and covering the wing nearest the green open space and walkways which lead to the leisure village. This year the students stepped up once again, adding their designs directly on the wing of the underpass.

Councillor Alison Whelan, chair of the Communities, Social Mobility and Inclusion Committee at Cambridgeshire County Council said: “After the hugely successful first phase of this vibrant and ambitious art project, I’m delighted we’re supporting this next phase, alongside our local partners.

“Providing opportunities for young people to have their skills and creativity recognised where they live, is one way we can really help them to thrive and their communities to prosper.”

Celebrating 49 years of singing together, the Isle Singers are looking forward to their 50th anniversary later this year. Over the decades, they have performed in a variety of venues, from Trinity College to Ely Railway Station at Christmas in support of the NSPCC.

While members have changed through the years, the group continues to perform beautiful two- and three-part harmonies. They rehearse weekly and enjoy bringing music to audiences across the area, most recently providing the music for an Evening of Music and Poetry at St Andrew’s Church.

The conservation project has been carefully designed to respect the house’s heritage, and the team will be working closely with specialist contractors experienced in historic building preservation.

During the temporary closure, all core services provided by Oliver Cromwell’s House will continue offsite, including the Tourist Information Centre and the popular Gift Shop, which will both relocate to Sessions House, Lynn Road, Ely, which has significant relevance to Ely, with many fascinating stories to tell.

Tours and talks about the building will be available to the community and visitors together with a series of new and exciting tour experiences in partnership with other local heritage sites and cultural organisations. Collectively, these initiatives will allow visitors to continue exploring the rich and diverse history of Ely through guided walks, collaborative events, and experiences throughout the city and surrounding area

The Visit Ely team will continue to offer visitor support, provide local information, and retail experiences from this temporary base.

This year, almost one fifth of all A-Level results achieved by King’s Ely Sixth Form students are the top A* grade. Around half of all grades attained are A*-A, and almost three quarters of results are grades A*-B. The overall pass rate is 99.5%

An impressive 92% of the Year 13 cohort achieved an immediate place at their first-choice university or institution, not just in the UK, but across the globe. As a marker of their all-round, enriched education, pupils are going on to study subjects as diverse as Medicine to Fashion Design Innovation, and Maritime Engineering to Artificial Intelligence.

Sixteen students achieved all A* and A grades; eight of whom each achieved at least three A* grades.

Every King’s Ely student holding Oxbridge offers achieved the top grades to take up their places this year. Other popular university destinations include Durham, Edinburgh, Exeter, London (UCL), Newcastle, York, and Sheffield.

Year 13 leavers are studying a fascinating and vast array of degrees and courses – as ever, subjects in STEM, Humanities, Languages, and the Arts are strong. Two pupils are going on to study Medicine this year.

Polly Casey, who joined King’s Ely Senior in Year 9, secured her place at New College, University of Oxford to study Music after achieving four A* grades. Polly said: “I did work hard for my exams, but I never thought I would do as well as I have! King’s is an amazing place to study and there are so many things that I will miss, especially the Music Department. I feel King’s gives you the right balance of nurture and freedom to carve your own path, and for you to really be you.”

Leo Good achieved all A grades, securing him a place at University College London to study History. Leo, who has been at King’s Ely since joining Nursery in 2009, said: “I feel like all the revision and late nights have paid off, but I also have my amazing teachers to thank too. They have all been incredibly supportive and always there if I needed them for anything. I could not think of a better place to study than at King’s. I have been here for sixteen years, and I have loved every minute of it!”

Charlotte Senior is heading to the University of Edinburgh to study Mathematics after achieving all A* and A grades. Charlotte, who joined King’s Ely Senior in Year 10, said: “I am so excited for Edinburgh! I love King’s and I will miss my friends, my teachers, and the entire school community so much, but I also feel well prepared for the next chapter.”

Xander Tong, who joined King’s Ely Acremont Pre-Prep in Year 2, achieved all A* and A grades, and is going to be studying Physics with Astrophysics at Lancaster University. Xander said: “King’s has been amazing. I think what really stands out for me is that my teachers have all been genuinely interested in me as an individual, and not just about my studies and results, but in my personal growth too.”

An impressive number of pupils have achieved three or more A* grades, but most importantly, many have exceeded their own personal expectations. As a year group, they have contributed in so many ways to school life and thoroughly deserve their success. They leave King’s, not only with some impressive academic qualifications but as well-rounded individuals who we are confident have the character and sense of responsibility to make a difference in whatever path they choose next. Thank you to the whole King’s Ely community who have supported and guided our pupils through to Year 13, wherever they started their journey.”

As well as offering almost thirty different A-Level courses, King’s Ely also enables pupils to study vocational Level 3 Diploma qualifications in Business Studies, and Food and Nutrition. This year, three quarters of students achieved at least a Distinction, a third of which were a Starred Distinction.

This year, thirty-two students also completed Extended Project Qualifications (EPQs) in addition to their A-Level subjects, which are equivalent to 50% of an A-Level. More than three quarters of students achieved an A*-B grade.

Returning this September, the programme features 33 different acts and includes a mix of live music, laugh-out-loud theatre, mind-blowing magic and dazzling dance. Hundreds of local residents played a part in shaping this season’s line-up by taking part in the choosing process. Highlights include: hip-hop dance theatre from I’m Muslamic Don’t Panik, dance performances from Olive Branch, theatre show The Ghost of a Smile! and storytelling from F(able): Fierce Fairy Tales for the Next Generation.

From performances to hands-on sessions for adults, families and young people, all events are affordably priced between £2 and £10, with concessions and flexible “pay what you can” options available at selected shows.

This season will offer more new artists and workshops than any other programme to date and features eight dance performances and workshops.

Ely Library will welcome the quick-witted comedy of Victor & Albert and the powerful dance theatre performance of I’m Muslamic Don’t Panik, both with Hearing Loops available, alongside a third live event later in the season.

Littleport Library will host:

• Crochet Flowers for Beginners – Monday 17 November, 6pm. Run by published author and teacher Claire Montgomerie, this workshop guides confident beginners aged 8+ (with some crochet experience) through creating colourful floral motifs. Under-12s must be accompanied by a ticket-holding adult.
• The Ghost of a Smile! – Saturday 13 December, 7pm (doors open 6.40pm). Two of Charles Dickens’ creepiest tales reimagined with a comic twist. Adapted and directed by Gavin Robertson and performed by Nicholas Collett. Suitable for adults and young people 12+. This is a Relaxed Performance with a quieter space available. Hearing Loops will also be in place.

Soham
At Soham Library, families can enjoy the Jungle Jumble Flip Book Workshop – Friday 31 October, 2pm. Illustrator Moira Millman will help participants aged 7+ create imaginative animal flip books using drawing, rubber stamping and collage. Under-12s must be accompanied by a ticket-holding adult.

Libraries like you’ve never seen them before

The humble libraries and community spaces of Cambridgeshire will be transformed with lighting, backdrops and sound equipment. And while there is plenty for the little ones to enjoy, adults can enjoy performances accompanied by a glass of something cold from the bar at some of our evening events.

Cambridgeshire is one of a small number of library authorities funded to help bring high-quality arts programmes to local communities, thanks to the continued funding from Arts Council England.

Over a three-year period, £530,000 has been invested to help keep ticket prices affordable and ensure that cost is not a barrier to participation.

The first event of the new season takes place on Saturday, 13 September. Demand is expected to be high, with many events likely to sell out quickly. Tickets can be purchased online, by scanning the QR code in the programme brochure, by phone, in person at participating libraries, or on the door (subject to availability).

Stagecoach East has consistently delivered great value options for travel and, with the new fares, Adults can now get unlimited travel for less than the price of a high-street latte.

But customers should decide which ticket is best for them. This can often be a period-ticket, like a 28 Day MegaRider, which will now provide Adults with unlimited travel, in a Town Zone, for just £3.21 a day, or a 7-Day Megarider, which will offer the same for £3.71 per day. For Youth passengers, the daily prices will be just £2.25 and £2.61.

If you prefer to be more flexible, a Flexi 10 ticket, bought through the Stagecoach App, for Adults, in a Town Zone, is just £4.55 per day and Flexi 5’s £5.20. Again, for Youth passengers, the prices will be £3.22 and £3.68.

An Annual Student Pass will cost just from just £1.62 per day and children under five will travel for free.

Stagecoach East will remain part of the government’s £3 fare cap meaning that you will never pay more than £3 for a single journey.

Connor Butler and Dr Ilona Karpanos have been named finalists in the Rising Star category at the 2025 British Chamber Awards, a key event in the UK business calendar run by the British Chambers of Commerce. The award celebrates professionals who are already making a significant impact within their Chamber and the wider business community.

Connor Butler, Engagement Manager, joined Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce in 2022 and has since played a central role in driving member engagement, financial growth and strategic influence. He has significantly grown the Chamber’s Patron Programme, increasing its value by more than 300 per cent. He also led a transformation of the Chamber’s committee structures into modern, inclusive forums that better represent the region’s diverse business community. His work delivering high-level political roundtables has brought key national figures to the region, including the Business Secretary and the Chief Secretary to the Treasury.

“Connor consistently delivers above and beyond expectations,” said Charlotte Horobin, Chief Executive of Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce. “He has made a significant and lasting impact across Cambridgeshire, Peterborough and Stamford. He is not only a rising star within the Chamber but a rising force within the wider business community.”

Beyond his role at the Chamber, Connor is a trustee of Peterborough Cathedral, a governor at a local school, and supports youth development through mentoring, work experience and college interview preparation. His broad involvement in community and civic life has contributed to a growing regional profile.

Dr Ilona Karpanos, who joined the Chamber in April 2024 as International Trade and Economic Development Manager, has already made a major contribution to the Chamber’s international agenda. Shortly after joining, she supported a Cambridgeshire business in successfully entering the Ghanaian market, creating a pathway for further trade opportunities. Her leadership in delivering large-scale international events has enabled more than 100 businesses to connect with diplomats, trade ministers and commercial experts.

“Ilona embodies the spirit of innovation, collaboration and impact,” said Charlotte Horobin. “She’s already helped businesses break into new international markets, navigate complex trade challenges, and seize global opportunities. Her support is making a real difference where it counts.”

Ilona brings a strong academic and professional background to her work. She holds a PhD in Political Science and International Business and has worked as a consultant across a range of sectors. Since joining the Chamber, she has also delivered internal training, improved support logistics for exporters and strengthened the Chamber’s capacity to assist companies in expanding overseas.

Charlotte added that the nominations reflect the strength of talent within the organisation and the region. “To see both Connor and Ilona recognised at national level is a moment of real pride for us and for the wider Cambridgeshire business community.”

The day will honour the momentous end of the Second World War and pay tribute to the sacrifices made by service personnel from Ely, Cambridgeshire, and across the Commonwealth.

A Full Day of Reflection and Commemoration

The programme will begin at 10.45am with a ceremonial raising of the VJ Day 80 Flag, followed by a Service at Ely’s War Memorial, where civic dignitaries, veterans, serving members of the Armed Forces, and residents will gather to remember those who served in the Far East campaign. The service will include the laying of wreaths, prayers, and to honour peace restored and lives lost.

At 12.00 noon there will also be a National Silence for 2 minutes.

The city will then come together once again at 6pm at St Mary’s Church, Ely, where the Royal British Legion and St Mary’s Church will be hosting a VJ Day tea party.  Then, at 7pm, St. Mary’s Church will deliver a poignant evening service of remembrance and thanksgiving. The service will include readings, music, and reflections in memory of those who never returned home.

The day will conclude with a Beacon Lighting Ceremony, part of a coordinated national initiative to symbolise the light of peace emerging from the darkness of conflict. Sing! Choirs will be joining the community to provide musical entertainment to mark the occasion.  The beacon will be lit at approximately 7.45pm by command of the Mayor of Ely, accompanied by members of the Royal British Legion and local cadet forces.

The Significance of VJ Day for Ely and Cambridgeshire

While VE Day marked the end of the war in Europe, it was VJ Day that brought global peace after the long and harrowing campaign in the Asia-Pacific region. For the people of Cambridgeshire, and Ely in particular, VJ Day holds special significance. Local men and women served with distinction in the Far East, enduring extreme hardship as prisoners of war or in active combat. Many families across the district still carry the legacy of loved ones who served in Burma, Malaya, and beyond.

David Martin, Chair of the Royal British Legion Ely Branch said 

“We will be remembering all those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice has always been important to us.  The local cost of war to bring an end to World War 2 and the war in the Far East has especial significance to us with many serving in the Cambridgeshire Regiment at the fall of Singapore and who suffered unimaginable pain as prisoners of war.  We honour those individuals and all who have served and continue to serve their Country.”

Formed in 2023/24, the Trust is dedicated to enhancing care and support for both patients and staff at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Ely. The hospital was originally established by the RAF in 1939 to treat military casualties and became part of the NHS in 1948. Renamed in 1987 as the Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital, it faced closure in 1992 but was saved thanks to community action by the campaign group Action for a Community Hospital.

Now, following a 2023 collaboration with the NHS, a two-phase redevelopment plan is underway. Phase 1 is already complete. However, funding is still needed for Phase 2, which aims to deliver:

• An Urgent Treatment Centre
• An Audiology Suite
• GP surgeries and outpatient diagnostic services
• Expanded day surgery capacity
• Urgent care for older people and those with long-term conditions

The Trust is actively looking for local volunteers, event fundraisers, and pro bono professionals to support the next stage of development. They are also keen to build stronger partnerships, including with NHS Trusts — despite the challenge of working across 12 separate bodies.

As Trustee Allyson Broadhurst explained: “If you don’t try, you’ll never get there.”

More than 150 works of art by professional and amateur creatives will be on display and sale in the exhibition, which is taking place in the Hayward Theatre at King’s Ely from Tuesday 5^th August to Sunday 10^th August.

The exhibition will be a celebration of the spectacular Great London Plane Tree of Ely, which is the largest in the UK, and one of the original London Planes. Located in Ely’s Old Palace Gardens, the 42-metre-high specimen has recently been awarded more than £120,000 by The National Lottery Heritage Fund to help safeguard its future. The tree was planted in around 1674 and is believed to have been a gift from King Charles II to the Bishop of Ely.

Artworks will include a wide variety of subjects, including the Ely Plane Tree itself and its glorious surroundings. The exhibition will be open from 10am-4pm every day, admission is free, and entry is via The Gallery, Ely, CB7 4DH.

On Saturday 9^th August and Sunday 10^th August, members of the public will not only be able to visit the exhibition but also tour the Old Palace Gardens and meet Ely’s London Plane Tree. On Saturday 9^th August, Adam Cormack, Head of Campaigning at The Woodland Trust, will also be delivering talks about heritage trees. David Day, who is leading the campaign to protect Ely’s London Plane Tree for future generations, will also be talking about the conservation project. These talks will be at 11am and 2pm. Again, the talks are free and everyone is welcome.

David Day said: “We will be delighted to welcome everyone to the art exhibition, and to celebrate our natural heritage. Working together with The Woodland Trust, The Tree Council, The University of Cambridge Department of Engineering, and others on the conservation of this heritage tree, the National Lottery Heritage Fund grant will finance the project over the next four years. The money will help to ensure that this magnificent tree can be enjoyed by future as well as current generations, and it stands as a fine example of how our natural heritage can be conserved and nurtured. The grant would not be possible without the National Lottery players, and we thank them for their generous support.”

Adam Cormack said: “We are really pleased to be supporting this event and the conservation work on the nationally important Plane Tree in the school grounds at King’s Ely. We are looking forward to showing people the tree and talking to visitors about it. Recent high profile tree felling cases including the Sycamore Gap Tree on Hadrian’s Wall and the Whitewebbs Park Oak in Enfield have underlined the importance of these trees but also their vulnerability. Our talks will cover this and much more.”

Located just three miles from Ely in the village of Little Downham, Ely Dog Field has been open for less than a year. Despite being a newcomer, the field was voted for and won top place. The competition, which saw dog fields across the country voted for by the public, highlights the growing popularity and community impact of these safe, enclosed spaces for dogs.

Ely Dog Field has built a strong and supportive community of local dog lovers on their social media. Customers regularly engage and enthusiastically support the field’s fundraising events for charities and local causes, something they do regularly. There is  also a community notice board to support other dog related businesses with advertising.

The field was also recently voted Best Dog Field in Cambridgeshire by readers of Cambridgeshire Live.

Ely Dog Field’s owner, Becky, said “We are delighted to have won this award, so soon after launching our dog field. We pour our hearts into making the field a great place for dogs and their humans, and this award makes all the hard work feel so worthwhile. We thank everyone in our team who helps keep things running smoothly.”

Spanning six acres, the fully enclosed field offers private hire sessions of 25 or 55 minutes, making it ideal for dogs that are nervous, reactive, or unable to be let off-lead in public spaces. The field features a wide range of agility equipment suitable for dogs of all sizes, a wooded area with jumps, a large sandpit in winter, and a gated splash pool for summer.

During the visit, the Guides had the chance to get hands-on with the sport; trying out basic rugby skills in a fun, supportive environment. After the session, they joined some of the Ely Tigers Girls team in the clubhouse for refreshments and a chance to chat about the sport.

As part of the RFU’s badge initiative, the unit has been given a rugby ball so that they can continue to practise their new skills whilst at Guides.

Ely Tigers Girls Visit The Cromwell School for End-of-Year Sports Taster

The Ely Tigers Girls section were recently invited to The Cromwell School in Chatteris (home to our very own Mr Mills) to lead a girls’ rugby session as part of the school’s end-of-year sports taster activities.

Both the players and coaches thoroughly enjoyed the session, which wrapped up with a lively and competitive game of rugby golf; a clear favourite among the participants! We hope this marks the beginning of a strong and rewarding relationship between Ely Tigers Girls & Women and The Cromwell School.

Ely Country Park and Jubilee Gardens, which are both owned by East Cambridgeshire District Council, have received the prestigious award.

The coveted Green Flag status is awarded to parks and green spaces which are free and open to everyone to enjoy, while meeting strict standards offering excellent visitor facilities.

This marks the 21st year Jubilee Gardens has been awarded a Green Flag and the tenth year for Ely Country Park.

Councillor Anna Bailey, Leader at East Cambridgeshire District Council, said: “Our district has many beautiful open spaces and Jubilee Gardens and the Country Park in Ely are excellent examples of this.

“For our gardens and parks to receive such recognition is a real credit to our parks and open spaces team and also the volunteers who dedicate their time for the benefit of our whole community, in particular the Friends of Jubilee Gardens.

“This is a coveted international award, granted to only 2,250 spaces throughout the UK, that recognises well-managed parks and green spaces. It is fantastic that our park and garden has received the award again.”

Phil Mitzman, chair of the Friends of Jubilee Gardens, said: “Our aim is to maintain the gardens as environmentally friendly as possible to attract wildlife and enhance biodiversity, as well as being beautiful. So we are extremely proud to have the gardens recognised once again with the Green Flag status.

“I would particularly like to thank all of the volunteers and the district council’s parks and open spaces team with whom we work closely, for all their hard work and long hours in making it such a special place for so many people.”

Jubilee Gardens features open space for picnics and free play, as well as a toddler play area, water feature and bandstand, which hosts riverside concerts during the summer months. Biodiversity is encouraged with bug hotels, bird boxes and log piles located throughout the gardens.

A short walk away, the Country Park has a picnic area where you can enjoy the play equipment including zip wire, wooden boat and swings, or you can just sit on the benches and watch the fun unfold in front of you. The park also has two trails which will help you to discover some spectacular views and enjoy the wildlife.

The Green Flag Award Scheme (http://greenflagaward.org/) is run by the environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, under licence from the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government, in partnership with Keep Scotland Beautiful, Keep Wales Tidy and Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful.

Any green space that is freely accessible to the public is eligible to enter for a Green Flag Award. Awards are given on an annual basis and winners must apply each year to renew their Green Flag Award status. A Green Flag Community Award recognises quality sites managed by voluntary and community groups. Green Heritage Site Accreditation is judged on the treatment of the site’s historic features and the standard of conservation.

The Mayor of Ely, Cllr Mike Banyard, Canon James Reveley of Ely Cathedral, and Greater Anglia’s Head of Corporate Affairs, Jonathan Denby, unveiled the plaque which commemorates the departure of the first trains from Ely on 30 July 1845.

In addition, guests also viewed the brand-new history boards that have been erected at the station as part of the wider Railway 200 celebrations.

The new history boards tell the story of the railway and its impact on the city, from its opening in 1845 right through to the present day. In line with the themes adopted by Railway 200, the history boards also illustrate how the railway has helped to shape the city and how it has changed the lives of people who have lived in Ely.

These new installations also focus on the people who have contributed so much to the development of the city, from Dean George Peacock, whose strong support for the railway led to its construction, through to the many local employees who have provided such excellent service to the community. The new history boards also recognise the ongoing excellent work of the current Greater Anglia team, who manage the station.

The history boards are now a permanent feature on platforms 2/3.

The Mayor of Ely, Cllr Mike Banyard, said:

“We cannot underestimate the role that the railway has played in the development of our city over 180 years, both initially in terms of supporting local agriculture and business and latterly in terms of giving local people excellent access to employment and leisure travel.

“We are very pleased to be able to mark this anniversary as our contribution to Railway 200.”

Visit Ely’s Tourism and Events Manager Anna Bennett, said:

“We are very aware of the positive contribution that the railway makes in bringing visitors to our city by an efficient and sustainable mode of transport.

In recent years, rail travellers have also benefitted from major improvements, such as new trains on all Greater Anglia services, a better Great Northern peak service to/from London Kings Cross, and more services to/from Stansted Airport.

As we celebrate 200 years of the modern railway in the UK, we look forward to contributing to the future success of Ely and the surrounding area.

Funded by a £250 grant from The Arts Society in London and proceeds from the Society’s November raffle, the project saw members create children’s art bags tailored for three different age groups.

Each handmade bag includes a variety of art supplies and easy-to-follow project ideas to help children stay creative over the summer holidays.

The bags were crafted by Maggie Haverson, Amanda Wesson and Vivien Hussey, with fabric donated by the family of former chairman Wendy Fox. Amanda Wesson and Susan Bluck sourced the materials and designed the activities. Tim Hoof and Janet Jones also contributed to the effort.

Nursery staff swapped little children for big mountains after joining forces to complete the Welsh Three Peaks Challenge.

Colleagues from Ely’s Cathedral View Childcare took on the energy-sapping challenge and raised a whopping £4,600 for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH).

After starting in the south at Pen y Fan, the group moved onto Cadair Idris and finished at Snowdon, in the process trekking 17 miles and climbing a total of 7,657 feet – all within just 24 hours.

The challenge, which began as a throwaway comment in a staffroom chat, was organised by nursery owner and manager Hayley Pierson, whose sister is a Clinical Nurse Specialist at EACH’s hospice in Milton.

“It was an amazing experience, although not without hiccups,” she said.

“In terms of beating the clock, it went down to the wire, and we only just completed our challenge in 24 hours.

“We had problems with shoes falling apart, coupled with horrendous weather, which cost us valuable time.

“However, we got there in the end, and I was so proud of our brilliant team, as well as being thankful to the parents, friends, family and businesses that so generously supported us.

“Some of the team have their own health challenges, and we knew the only way we’d get through it was to support each other.

“It was a genuine team effort, and no-one raced ahead. Instead, there was lots of stopping, waiting and supporting each other.

“When soles fell off shoes, team members even swapped footwear, and I heard so much cheering and encouragement, which made it a very special experience.”

The group – ten colleagues, plus four members of family and friends – signed up for the challenge before picking their chosen charity, booking their accommodation and minibus and arranging a practice trek in the Peak District.

They then decided to support EACH – a charity Hayley knows well.

“It made complete sense, because it’s a local charity and there’s a common link with what we do here at Cathedral View, in that everything we do is for the children we care for,” she said.

“It’s obviously a cause I know lots about through my sister, too.

“She isn’t one to talk too much about her work, but I know the hospices are amazing places, and the care team must be very strong, special people to do the job they do.

“It’s an incredibly good cause and one we all have such time and respect for.”

Hayley said the challenge was mentally and physically draining.

Pen y Fan was like a “bog”, given heavy rain, while the hardest part of the challenge was Cadair Idris.

“We had to walk the second mountain in complete darkness, which was very disorientating,” she said.

“It’s the steepest climb of them all, and the only light came from our headtorches.

“We didn’t know where the edge of the mountain was, so had to concentrate very hard. It was exhausting.”

The team recently handed over their cheque to Sam Woo, EACH’s Senior Corporate Fundraiser for Cambridge and North Essex.

Sam said: “It was fantastic to meet Hayley and her brilliant team from Cathedral View.

“It sounds like an epic experience, albeit physically and mentally draining.

“They have our upmost respect and sincere thanks, because donations like this make such an enormous difference to our vital work across Cambridgeshire and the rest of East Anglia.”

It was no wonder St Mary’s Church was packed on Saturday evening as Ely Choral Society and Ely Youth Choir performed their much-anticipated concert Broadway Comes to Ely.

Led by Musical Director Andrew Parnell, the evening was a joyful celebration of iconic songs from musical theatre, beautifully delivered by both choirs and a selection of talented soloists. Accompanists Jeremy Lloyd, Paul Stephenson, and Andrew Parnell himself brought the music to life with energy and elegance.

The programme opened with well-loved numbers from Carousel, including You’ll Never Walk Alone, If I Loved You, June Is Bustin’ Out All Over, A Real Nice Clambake and Blow High, Blow Low. With moving performances and clear diction, these opening songs set the tone for a heartfelt evening.

A touching rendition of Someone to Watch Over Me from Oh Kay followed, stirring the audience with its simplicity and emotion.

The Ely Youth Choir, accompanied by Paul Stephenson, charmed the crowd with lively pieces from Matilda the Musical, Oliver, and A Chorus Line. Their sweet harmonies and confident performances brought fresh energy to the night. They later joined the main choir for highlights from West Side Story and their own standout Mamma Mia medley, finishing with the final number Lullaby of Broadway from 42nd Street.

Solo performances were a real highlight throughout the evening. Megan and Paul Stephenson sang Love Is an Open Door from Frozen with warmth and charm, while Mary Hancock gave a commanding rendition of The Hills Are Alive from The Sound of Music.

Selections from West Side Story, Wicked and Aladdin brought more familiar melodies to the programme, with I Feel Pretty, One Hand One Heart, Maria, and America standing out as audience favourites.

Further solos wowed the crowd, including Amanda Bouskill with her beautifully controlled high-range performance of Is It Really Me? from 110 in the Shade, and the entertaining duet The Book of Mormon by Charles Shneider and Paul Stephenson.

Valerie Housden gave a stunning performance of Bring Him Home from Les Misérables, delivered with sincerity and rich tone. The evening continued with Fixer Upper from Frozen and Send in the Clowns, both warmly received by the audience.

The concert ended on a high with the jazzy Lullaby of Broadway, leaving the audience calling for more.
