A-Levels to be offered in Ely next year

None of the colleges across East Cambridgeshire are currently offering A-Levels – but that is about to change.

This week Bishop Laney Sixth Form, the name given to Ely College’s sixth-form college, launched its new prospectus for next year, which will include seven A-Levels as well as a range of other qualifications.

The news will be welcomed by many families, whose children may no longer have to travel out of the area to gain these qualifications.
A-Level courses offered will be mathematics, design technology, geography, biology, combined English language and literature, art and design, and history.
These will be provided in addition to existing technical and vocational courses, such as hairdressing and beauty therapy, cookery, sport, business and media studies.
Bishop Laney Sixth Form, which aims to  prepare its students for professional life, will now offer three different routes for its students, which they can tailor to their choices; a solely A Level route, a mix of A Level and Diploma courses or a purely Diploma route.
Ely College principal Richard Spencer said: “Bishop Laney Sixth Form provides a vibrant post-16 establishment, within a smaller and dedicated environment where the needs of all our students can be met. We have the desire to offer more than education, ensuring students are prepared for professional life, such as through our business mentoring programme…
“Our collaborative way of working is innovative and allows us to share resources and provide the best offer for our students.
“We are immensely proud of what Bishop Laney can and will offer the students and their families in East Cambridgeshire.”
Bishop Laney Sixth Form was launched in 2016, through the partnership of Staploe Education Trust and Cambridge Meridian Academies Trust, and opened its doors to its first cohort of students in September this year.
Adam Steels, who leads Bishop Laney, said “We are really excited to be introducing the option of A Levels to our students.
“In 2016 we achieved the coveted 100 per cent pass rate for vocational courses and over 66 per cent of results were awarded at Distinction or Distinction* level.
“Additionally, our Pledges+ scheme encourages students to take part in extra-curricular activities to broaden their skills, try out new activities and to simply enjoy themselves, is in action at Bishop Laney Sixth Form. At Bishop Laney, we also boast state of the art facilities including dedicated science labs, art and photography studios and a fitness suite.”
