Match Report: AFC Ely vs Soham Town Rangers A

AFC Ely start the season with a convincing 5.1 win over Soham Town Rangers A at Julius Martin Lane on Friday 1st September.

Ely took an early lead in the 3rd minute through last seasons top scorer Will Cooper with a composed finish after being played in over the top by James Gillett.

In the 10th minute Cooper was taken down in the box and captain Ross Gray stepped up to the concert the spot kick.

A few minutes later the Soham keeper misplaced a pass whilst trying to play from the back allowing Ross Gray to use the defender to curl an effort around and into the corner for his second of the game.

Soham responded on 18 minutes with a freekick to make it 3.1 but Ely responded straight away with a 4th goal coming from debutant Tom Goodjohn with a neat finish curled into the corner from the edge of the box in what would be a man of the match performance from Goodjohn.

Ely completed the scoring with the move of the game as they switched the ball left to right between their midfield and attack with the ball eventually being crossed in by Ryan Lawrence for Ross Gray to complete his hat trick with a composed side foot finish into the corner.

With the game wrapped up at halftime both teams took their feet off the gas second half with minimal chances and some composed defending from Ely to see out the result.

Man of the match was Tom Goodjohn, signed from Mepal over the summer, who showed quick feet and a creative eye throughout.

AFC continue their good form from the end of last season and have now won seven of their last ten competitive games and have high ambitions for this season.

Ely’s next game is at Home on 16/09/23 vs Swavesey Institute Reserves.
