More Than One Hundred Ely Girls Raise Over £1,300 For Children In Need and Girlguiding

Over 120 girls spread out over the City of Ely in a super-charged sponsored litter pick on Saturday 19th November in aid of this year’s BBC Children in Need and Girlguiding’s appeal, raising over £1,300

Despite the drizzle, spirits were high as they met outside St Mary’s Church with all the girls determined to do their best for their local community.

Armed with gloves, bags and litter pickers, many of which were loaned from Ely Litter Pickers community group, the girls split off into different directions.

The Rainbows, Girlguiding’s youngest members, stayed close by, whilst the Brownies combed Cherry Hill Park, and the Guides made it as far as the Paradise Centre and Ely Country Park, before reconvening again on St Mary’s Street brandishing their findings. Leaders accompanied the girls at all times.

“We are incredibly proud of what our young members have achieved,” said Alexa Minett, an Ely City District Commissioner and leader of 4th Ely Guides.

“They have cared for their local environment, worked as a team, and raised a lot of money for two great causes, Girlguiding and BBC Children in Need, at the same time. We would also like to thank everybody who has supported the girls in their fundraising.

“We have a thriving Girlguiding presence in Ely with over 200 young members, supported by a team of dedicated adult volunteers and young leaders. We are looking to recruit more adult volunteers, particularly for the Guides section, so that we can offer a wonderful experience of friendship, skills and adventure to even more girls in Ely.”

Now in the third year of partnership, the annual joint fundraising campaign between Children in Need and Girlguiding, raises much needed funds to help empower the lives of young people.

All money raised will be split equally between BBC Children in Need and Girlguiding and will go on to make a difference to young lives across the UK.

For Girlguiding the money raised will support at a local and national level to benefit girls and young women the length and breadth of the UK and will enable the charity to continue supporting their wellbeing by providing a space where they can be themselves, have fun, make brilliant friendships, build confidence, and gain valuable life skills at a time where many need it the most.

For BBC Children in Need money raised will help to support local charities and projects in communities across the UK that are helping children and young people facing a range of disadvantages such as living in poverty, being disabled or ill, or experiencing distress, neglect or trauma.
