A 16-year-old St John Ambulance volunteer from Ely has won a role as one of the top St John Ambulance Cadets in the health charity’s East region.
Oscar Barter scooped the title of the region’s 2020 Cambridgeshire District Cadet of the Year at a recent competition.
He will represent his fellow Cadets in Cambridgeshire throughout 2020 at public and St John Ambulance events.
In a competition designed to single out the district’s most outstanding St John Ambulance Cadet, Oscar had to complete a first aid challenge to demonstrate his life saving abilities and take part in a team building exercise as well as give a presentation and be interviewed by judges.
He will join several other East region Cadets to compete for the title of overall Regional Cadet of the Year and the National Cadet of the Year early next year.
Oscar is studying for A-Levels in Double Maths, Physics and Computer Science at Hills Road Sixth Form College in Cambridge. A member of the Ely Cadet unit, Oscar has been a volunteer with St John for the past three years and is currently working towards completing his Grand Prior Award, the highest qualification available to a St John Cadet.
At his unit, Oscar is a Cadet Sergeant. He has used his first aid skills to good effect and, in the past, has helped change a friend’s dressing, given advice to people on a 40-mile walk on the Dorset coast including how to deal with sprains and other related injuries, then passing them on to the official first aiders for that event, and has provided assistance at many St John events including Duxford and the Newmarket Races, treating stings, sprains, trips, falls and fractures.
He said: ‘I’m thrilled to have been selected as Cambridgeshire District Cadet of the Year. During 2020 I’m looking forward to helping improve Cadet and Badger groups within my area and also to promoting St John and its work within the local communities, getting more people interested in first aid. I have enjoyed being a Cadet so much and want to give back to this amazing organisation.’
