Pi Day 2017 at Witchford Village College

On Tuesday 14^th March, the mathematics corridor rang with the sound of decimal numbers! This year’s Pi reciting competition attracted twenty-four contenders who all succeeded in memorising at least twenty decimal places, winning themselves a Pi badge.

There were many notable performances, Eva Ellsmore took the Year 7 title with 41 digits, a close-fought battle for the Year 8 title between Phoebe White and Matthew Lowe (who both recited over 100 digits) was won by Phoebe with 112 digits. Mr Clark was determined not to be beaten and reeled off 119 digits.
However, the star of the day was George Henderson (Year 9) who recited an incredible 264 digits, to an astounded roomful of people. George is a student in The Cabin, an autistic spectrum centre based at Witchford Village College. Tracey Orchard, George’s keyworker said, ‘We are immensely proud of George’s effort and achievement and would like to thank all The Cabin staff that have supported George to reach this goal.’
As well as Pi badges and a Pi cake, each year group champion will be presented with a certificate and a prize. Congratulations to all who took part.
