Second World War Day at Ely Museum

Join us for a Second World War Living History Day at Ely Museum on Saturday 6th November 2021

On Saturday 6th November, Ely Museum is delighted to welcome the teams from Khaki Devil and Great War Huts, who are leading experts on the British Army during the Second World War for a living history day.

Alongside several of their specialist living history actors, their staff will be here with a fascinating range of uniform, equipment and weaponry – including some examples of the various things worn or used by the local 2nd Battalion, Cambridgeshire Regiment during the War.

Visitors will be able to get a close look and even handle some of the examples of the uniforms and equipment, as well as talk to the experts who will be on hand to answer any questions.

Also joining us on the day will be members of the Cambridgeshire Regiment Research Trust, who will be happy to help with any questions about the Regiment and show you around the Museum’s latest exhibition – From Fenland Fields to Far East Jungles: The 2nd Battalion, Cambridgeshire Regiment 1939-45

This exhibition, which can be found in Ely Museum’s Marshall Fisher Gallery, covers the story of the locally raised 2nd Battalion, Cambridgeshire Regiment during the Second World War, including their part in the fighting in Malaya and Singapore and their time spent as Far East Prisoners of War.

The wartime story of the Battalion is further told through a carefully curated range of objects and photographs connected to some of the men who served in the Battalion as well as specific information about these individuals.

Emily Allen, Community Engagement Officer at Ely Museum, said, “Ahead of Remembrance Sunday the following weekend, we are delighted to welcoming such a team of experts to the museum on Saturday for another of our popular living history days.  With the chance to meet the experts, see a fantastic range of Second World War objects and see our poignant new exhibition ‘Fenland Fields to Far East Jungles’ too.”

The Second World War History Day takes place between 11am – 4pm on Saturday 6th November and alongside admission to the temporary exhibition, is all included with your normal admission ticket / annual pass to the museum.
