Ely Festive Food & Gift Markets will take place every Friday from 17th November, 10am-4pm. These markets will feature a wonderful selection of unique gifts and crafts to suit all budgets. Visitors will find lots of delicious seasonal street food, coffee and treats. These markets will take place on Fridays from 10am-4pm at Ely Market Place.

On Friday 24th November our Festive Food & Gift Market will be a special extended late-night opening until 7pm. From 1200 there’s a chance to visit the Re-Imagine Christmas Community Eco-Grotto with crafty ideas for a more sustainable eco-friendly Christmas celebration.  Plus, festive entertainment from local choirs around the enchanting lights of the Christmas tree and a special dance performance from 4D Dance Group.

Featuring some of the most delicious food vendors from across the region, there will be something for everyone at Foodie Friday with a fantastic food and drink line-up alongside live music from local artists from 4pm-8:30pm.

Julia Davis, of Ely Markets, said: “We are very excited about the return of Foodie Friday this year, it is a great place to meet with friends and family whilst trying out all the fantastic independent food traders that will be on offer.”

Foodie Friday has an eclectic menu of flavours to try, with everything from meat, veggie or sweet waffles from Waffle + Co, salt beef beigls and savoury momos to authentic Spanish paella from Azahar Foods and vegan choices from Samu Kitchen. There’s also fresh wood fired Pizza and luscious cakes and puddings, all accompanied by a tipple of choice from one of the many drink vendors available onsite.

Following the launch event, the next ‘Foodie Friday’ is scheduled for April 28th.

On Friday 3rd June, there will be a special Platinum Jubilee Celebration Market, and all the regular markets will take place as usual on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.

The Platinum Jubilee Celebration Market is on Friday 3rd June, 9am-4pm. There will be a range of free entertainment on the main Market Place, including a performance by local choir SING! at 10am and 12 noon and the Stumpy Oak Ceilidh Band from 1.30-3.45pm. There will also be spontaneous walkabout street theatre by the Hocus Pocus Theatre Company throughout the afternoon.

Re-Imagine Resource Centre will be hosting a free ‘Eco-Hatters’ pop-up craft event all day for children to make a special Jubilee hat and take a commemorative selfie. 4th Dimension Dance will be performing a showcase of dance at 11am and Steve Tucker, a local airbrush artist, will also be in residence with his special customised Jubilee motorbike.

“The Platinum Jubilee is all about making memories,” says Julia Davis of Ely Markets. “Our special celebration on Friday 3rd June is a chance for the whole community to gather together and enjoy a day to remember. Come and dance with our ceilidh band, Stumpy Oak – or why not sit back and enjoy the show from one of our new deckchairs? Children will love our free ‘Eco Hatters’ craft pop-up where you can decorate a wonderful hat to wear over the weekend!”

There will be plenty of seating available on the main Market Place and lots of delicious food and drinks to choose from – including wood-fired pizza, locally brewed beer, picnic fare, cakes and more.

In addition to the entertainment on the main square, there will also be craft stalls and local artisan food on Market Street and Dolphin Lane. “We’ve got a lovely selection of craft and food stalls booked for our Jubilee Celebration Market,” says Julia Davis. “Many of our talented regular traders will be showcasing unique new products and we’ve also got enough delicious foodie options to keep the whole family happy. While you browse our stalls, look out for the special walkabout street entertainment from Hocus Pocus Theatre and artist Steve Tucker, who will be custom spray-painting his motorbike with a special Jubilee design live at the market!”

As well as the Platinum Jubilee Celebration Market on Friday 3 June, Ely Market will be running its usual weekly markets on Thursday 2nd June, Saturday 4th June and Sunday 5th June. Visitors can stock up on treats for the weekend – or relax with a cup of coffee and some street food. There will be special Jubilee extras at these markets too, including a performance by the Isle of Ely School of Irish Dancing on Sunday at 12 noon.

After the launch event, there will be a regular Foodie Friday on the last Friday of every month.

The Foodie Friday launch on 15th April will feature a vibrant selection of food vans and stalls. Food will be served from 5-8pm and there will be live music and a covered seating area with tables and chairs. This event will be followed by a busy Easter weekend, including the regular Saturday and Sunday Markets, plus a Bank Holiday Market on Monday 18th April from 9am-4pm. 

“We’re thrilled to be launching our new Foodie Friday event in time for Easter,” says Julia Davis of Ely Markets. “People already love the street food at our markets and there’s a real buzz on social media about our new event. We’re really excited about the street food and live music we’ve got lined up!”

Foodie Friday runs from 5-8pm, allowing people to come after work and meet friends and family. There will be lots of different foods to try, everything from Greek gyros, wood-fired pizza and Thai noodles to vegan mezze boxes and salad – plus Italian wine from Ely Wine and refreshments from Silver Oak Coffee and the Lemon Tree Deli. Visitors can enjoy their street food in the covered seating area, or take it away to enjoy at home.

After the special launch event on 15th April, Foodie Friday will run on the last Friday of every month during the summer season – starting on 29th April. The two free performances entertained around 240 children and their families during the afternoon.

Directed by Kate Flatt, The Weather Machine is a playful outdoor work, where two witty characters make magic out of dance and weather – from the pitter patter of the lightest rain shower to the awesome howl of a storm, from footsteps in the snow to a joyful celebration of sunshine.

Babylon ARTS’ Chief Executive, Claire Somerville said “We were delighted to  team-up with Ely Markets again and would like to thank them for their support. The team and I particularly enjoyed watching the young children dance-along with the performers. We have plans for more dance and theatre performances in 2022.”

The Weather Machine is intended as an entertaining and interactive dance that also explores serious issues including the current Climate emergency. Through playful expression and gentle interaction, the performers engaged with children and their families.

There will be two performances of ‘The Weather Machine’ on Wednesday 27th October in the Market Place. This is a free event, brought to the city by Babylon Arts and Ely Markets.

“Babylon Arts is delighted to be working with Ely Markets again to bring some fun and creativity to the Market Square this October half-term,” says Claire Somerville, Chief Executive of Babylon Arts. “The Weather Machine is a bite-size dance show for young children and their families and we hope to see lots of people coming to enjoy a performance like we had with ‘Moon’ in 2019″.

The Weather Machine is an entertaining dance theatre performance on the themes of weather and the seasons. This outdoor performance features two dancers and will seek to explain climate change in a playful and gentle way that is suitable for all the family.

“Ely Markets is delighted to be showcasing an exciting community event this half term,” says Emma Grima, Director Commercial, East Cambs Trading Company. “This free performance of The Weather Machine is great way to explain the challenges of climate change to children through the magic of dance. We will also have refreshments available on the Market Place to keep everyone happy!”

The Weather Machine is aimed at children aged 3-9 years and their families. There will be two chances to see the dance performance on Wednesday 27th October 2021 at 12 noon and 1:30pm on Ely Market Place.

The performances are free to attend, and no tickets are required. The run time for each performance is approximately 20 minutes.

East Cambs Street Scene is joining forces with Ely Markets to launch a competition for Food Waste Action Week.

The nationwide event, organised by WRAP, one of the globe’s leading sustainability charities, aims to highlight that food waste is an issue that affects everyone – and the planet.

Ely Markets and East Cambs Street Scene are organisations that operate independently within East Cambridgeshire District Council’s two trading companies.  From 1st to 7th March they will work together to promote Food Action Week, ensuring that the campaign’s key messages reach a large audience across the district.  This will include blog posts and social media content, plus banners on the Market Place and an Ely Markets competition. 

Prizes include a takeaway meal for two from the Cambridge Samosa Company, a £10 voucher from Lincolnshire Poacher Cheese, storage boxes from Jac Pots Jacket Potatoes as well as a tray of brownies from Peppy Neds. The competition aims to raise awareness of the habits that see roughly one third of food produced worldwide wasted.

The Council’s participation in Food Waste Action Week emphasises its commitment to tackling climate change, with an often-unknown side effect of food waste being that it contributes 8-10% of total man-made greenhouse gas emissions.

David Ambrose-Smith, Chairman of the Operational Services Committee at East Cambridgeshire District Council, said:

“As a Council, we have shown in recent years that we are wholly committed to tackling any issues that pose a threat to our natural environment and food waste is included in this.

“In East Cambridgeshire alone, a waste analysis which took place in 2018/19 found that the average family throws away a staggering 87kg of edible food every year – the equivalent of 57 chickens.

“The statistics that have been provided by Food Waste Action Week reminds us that we can all play our part to make a difference.”

Julia Huffer, Member Champion for Waste and Recycling, also commented:

“We are delighted to be supporting such a great initiative and highlighting our responsibility to do more to waste less food every day.

“Our competition will not only offer fantastic prizes, but will promote the invaluable awareness of how to make the most of the food we buy – we urge everyone in the local area to take part and help combat this growing issue.”

“During Food Waste Action Week, Ely Markets will be using social media to share tips and recipes from their traders to make the most of our fantastic market produce. In line with government restrictions, this will include fruit, vegetables, eggs, cheese, bread, meat, fish, plants and takeaway food and coffee. There will be no seating and shoppers will be required to leave the Market Place promptly. 

The opening times of the market remain the same and there will be markets on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays as usual. All other traders, such as crafts, antiques and clothes, will return to Ely Markets when the current lockdown finishes.

“The market is an important part of community life,” says Emma Grima, Commercial Director of East Cambs Trading Company. “It’s very important to us that people can continue to shop for great quality produce in the fresh air.”

Each stall will display clear signage and defined areas for socially-distanced queueing. Contactless payment systems will be in place where possible. Information on home deliveries and ‘click & collect’ services will be available on the Ely Markets website.

Ely Markets will be open for essential shopping from 5th November – 2nd December. The market will re-open fully when legally able to do so.

Ely-based ceramicist Louise Beale and sculptor Mike Hartley have been announced as the two artists winning a £1800 commission for the “Somewhere in Ely” project.

The outdoor arts project called “Somewhere in Ely” was launched in the city earlier this year with the support of Babylon Arts, Ely Markets and Ely College.  Artists, makers and creators from across the country were invited to propose ideas for fun and unexpected things to happen in the city.  There were over 70 proposals offering performances, sculpture, installations, activities and events.  It was the job of Ely residents to vote on the final five shortlisted artists.  

“We are delighted to announce the two artists voted by the public to receive commissions as part of the Somewhere in Ely project,” Says project manager Amy Wormald

“Louise Beale is a ceramic artist based in Ely.  Her vision is to bring an installation of hundreds of ceramic sculptures to our city.  Louise is inviting local people to get involved in and will be giving away free making kits to anyone who is interested.”

“Mike Hartley makes kinetic sculptures using recycled materials.  He is developing a fantastical contraption called the ‘The Yesterday and Tomorrow Machine.’  We’ll share photos of him working in a forge on our social media channels over the coming weeks.”

The two artists will be developing their work to share in Ely during October half term.  Local residents are invited to get involved from August to September.  If you would like to try your hand at making a model out of air-dry clay please get in touch.  Louise will be giving away ‘making packs’ to Ely residents, families, businesses, schools and care homes.  The packs include clay, paint and materials, and all the instructions you will need to make your own mini artwork.

Ely Markets will reopen on Thursdays and Saturdays from 11th June. Initially, these markets will include a small number of stalls selling fruit, vegetables, eggs, cheese, bread, meat, fish and plants.

There will be social distancing and safety measures in place to help ensure the wellbeing of traders, staff and members of the public. The Sunday Market and mini-Markets will remain closed for now and other stalls, such as crafts, antiques and street food will return at a later date.

“We are very pleased that Ely Markets is reopening,” says Emma Grima, Commercial Director of East Cambs Trading Company. “This first phase means we can bring back some of your favourite traders, whilst helping to keep everyone safe with social distancing and other safety measures.”

The first markets will take place on Thursday 11th June and Saturday 13th June, from 8.30am-3.30pm, on the main Market Place and Dolphin Lane. Shoppers can expect to see a good selection of food, produce and plants. Each stall will provide clear signage and defined areas for socially-distanced queueing. Contactless payment systems will be in place where possible.

“We need your help to make this work as smoothly as possible,” says Emma Grima. “You should expect to see some barriers in place, and you need to ensure you follow sensible social distancing guidelines. Please don’t expect to stop for a chat with our traders or your friends. You can do that in the future. For now, we need you to leave the Market Place as soon as you have completed your shopping.”

At first, these smaller markets will only take place on Thursdays and Saturdays. Other stalls, such as crafts, antiques and street food will return to Ely Markets at a later date.

“We have chosen to reopen in stages, rather than allowing everyone to return at once,” says Emma Grima. “We have a duty of care to our traders and customers. We cannot rush this process. A phased re-opening allows us all to make sensible plans, adjust to the new conditions and, most importantly, keep everyone as safe as possible.”

A council is seeing the advantages of establishing its trading company as £1.7million of £4.62million loan has been repaid 15 months ahead of schedule.

East Cambs Trading Company (ECTC) was established by East Cambridgeshire District Council (ECDC) in 2016 and manages the district’s city market, open spaces and the development of new homes.

ECTC was set up with working capital provided by the council through a loan of up to £5million, which is due for repayment in March 2021. To date, ECTC has drawn down on £4.62million of the loan. With the recent repayment, the outstanding loan amount has reduced to £2.92million.

A £1.7m loan repayment from ECTC was received by the council, 15 months ahead of schedule in December 2019.

On top of the repayment, the council has also collected £1.6million from the trading company in financial benefit to date.

The main financial benefits have come from the trading company’s property development through Palace Green Homes.

Palace Green Homes has already paid the council £725,000 in land receipts, more than £143,000 in Community Infrastructure Levy developer contributions and in excess of £73,000 in Section 106 contributions.

Councillor Anna Bailey, Leader of ECDC, said: “We know our residents want us to be more commercial, but they want us to be reasonable about it, and that is exactly what we are doing – being commercial for community benefit.

“Having the trading company has allowed us to deliver really high quality and genuinely affordable homes in partnership with Community Land Trusts. Any profit from housing and commercial services is retained and invested for the benefit of our residents in the taxpayer’s purse and helps the council protect its priority services. In fact, the trading company has contributed to the council’s ability to freeze council tax.”

The trading company also oversees Ely Markets and the district’s open spaces.

Emma Grima, Director at East Cambs Trading Company said: “Ely Markets promotes local producers, provides a hub for small local businesses and contributes to the local economy. It also attracted a royal visit in 2018 and was named Market Team of the Year by their peers.”

Emma Grima continued: “Where open spaces are concerned, the ongoing high-quality service provided to the district council has contributed to two prestigious green flags continuing to fly high at Ely Country Park and Jubilee Gardens.

“What’s more, any profit made by working with other organisations is ploughed back into local services.”

Growth opportunity in grounds maintenance brings potential £100k benefit for council contract

The efforts made by ECTC’s ground maintenance team to extend their services to other organisations such as academies and parish councils, has provided the company with an opportunity to potentially reduce its fees to the council by £100,000 in 2020/2021. This proposal is included within the trading company’s 2020/2021 business plan, which will be discussed at the council’s Finance and Assets Committee on 6th February.

Councillor Bailey continued “The opportunity to negotiate this reduction in management fees has only been made possible by allowing the grounds maintenance service to grow and be a commercial service in its own right through the trading company.

“To be in a financial situation where this option is even on the table, just shows how far the grounds maintenance team has come in three years. This growth provides a strong outlook for the future and as sole shareholder of the trading company, the council will be looking to use these savings to benefit the delivery of its services to residents.”

Over 750 people were treated to spectacular performances of the dance/circus show ‘Moon’ peformed by 2FacedDance, in Ely Market Square on 23rd October.

‘Moon’ was presented by The Library Presents, led by Cambridgeshire County Council and was also part of Babylon ARTS’ Leap into Dance project, both funded by Arts Council England. The team worked closely with Ely Markets to put on the event and hope to do more in future.

Crowds gathered before the start of the two performances, whilst the dancers warmed-up and introduced the audience to the props and characters within the story.

Mayor of Ely, Cllr Mike Rouse, attended the second performance and took the time to pose for photos with the performers and members of the team.

This half-term Ely Markets is hosting a spectacular dance and circus event for all the family.

There will be two performances of ‘Moon’ by the 2Faced Dance Company on Wednesday 23rd October in the Market Place. This is a free event, brought to the city by Babylon Arts and The Library Presents as part of their Leap into Dance Festival.

“Children and their grown-ups are in for a real treat,” says Claire Somerville, Chief Executive of Babylon Arts. “This dance production is all about a boy called Jack meeting the Moon. Together they’ll embark on an amazing adventure on Ely’s Market Place. It’s going to be a spectacular experience for everyone, with a combination of circus, dance and puppetry.”

As well as watching the performance, children can visit the market stalls and have a go at making a lolly with Cocoa Cave Chocolates. There will also be food and refreshments available from a selection of family-friendly street food vendors.

Ely Markets’ Vegan Fair returns to the High Street on Saturday 19th October.

This popular event is now in its fourth year and brings together some of the region’s most vibrant and innovative vegan traders and producers. Soak up the atmosphere, try some delicious food and discover more about the health and wellbeing benefits of following a vegan lifestyle.

“Ely has a fantastic vegan community,” says Emma Grima, Commercial Director of East Cambridgeshire District Council. “The Vegan Fair brings together our wonderful network of producers and stallholders in one place. This isn’t just an event for vegans – it’s for anyone who’s curious about trying bright and exciting new flavours. We’ve got something for everyone – from Middle Eastern-inspired street food and vegan Scotch eggs, to gorgeous cakes and sticky bakes.”

There will be a diverse range of vegan food available on the day. Sample a Pumpkin Spice Savoury Roll from Food! by Lizzi or try exciting street food from Samu Kitchen and The Wandering Yak. Doodle Doughnuts and The Iced Vegan will also be there with lots of sweet treats.

A district council has stepped up its proactive campaign to tackle environmental crime.

The Let’s SCRAP fly-tipping event, organised by East Cambridgeshire District Council’s (ECDC) domestic environmental services team, was held at Ely Markets on Wednesday, 31st July.

Several organisations, who form part of the Cambridgeshire SCRAP fly-tipping group, came together at the event, including the Environment Agency and Cambridgeshire Police.

While East Cambs Street Scene brought a collection of fly-tipped items and asked visitors to guess the weight of the items as well as the cost to the council.

Councillor David Ambrose Smith, chairman of ECDC’s operational services committee, said: “It’s clear to see the strides that we have made in cracking down on fly-tipping.

“East Cambridgeshire a great place to live, work and visit and we want to keep it that way. To achieve this, we need to proactively encourage our residents to report fly-tipping in their community, react to those incidents promptly and penalise those who dispose of their waste illegally.”

Figures from the council have revealed that the number of reports of fly-tipping have fallen across the district.

The statistics show that from April to June 2018/19, there were a total of 171 incidents of fly-tipping reported, compared to 157 in the same period in 2019/20.

In June, there were 42 reports – a decrease from the 49 incidents reported in June 2018.

Councillor Julia Huffer, member champion for waste, health and wellbeing at East Cambridgeshire District Council, said: “The decrease in fly-tipping reports being made to the council is a direct result of the enforcement action and clean-up operations that have been carried out in partnership with the council’s environmental health team and East Cambs Street Scene.

“I am delighted that the fly-tipping event at Ely Markets was so well attended.

“It was great to engage with our residents and let them know how they can help in the fight against fly-tipping.

“The event provided the perfect opportunity to reinforce the message that we are determined to stamp out the fly-tipping that blights our beautiful district.”

The event, which ran alongside Ely Market’s mini market, follows last year’s ECDC week-long crackdown. During the purge, more than 40 tonnes of fly-tipping across the district was uncovered including five freezers, four fridges, three sofas, two armchairs and a 60-inch TV.

Since then, the council has issued more than £2,000 in fines in relation to fly-tipping and littering in the first half of 2019. Two offences went to court where the defendant entered a guilty plea and was fined £320.

Silver Oak Coffee will be serving drinks, including their famous Espresso Martinis. A face-paint artist, local traders and craftspeople will complete the line-up.

“Our Summer Late is a great way to kick start the holidays,” explains Emma. “Get the whole family in the party mood with some amazing glittery face-paint from Sara Ford. Ukul-Ely will then keep you entertained while you enjoy our new selection of street food from around the world. And you won’t want to miss the very exciting surprise we’ve got lined up from the 4th Dimension dance group at the start of the evening!”

As the UK prepares to ban plastic straws, cotton buds and other single use plastics from next year, East Cambridgeshire District Council is hoping to take a lead in reducing waste.

Across the UK over 8 billion plastic straws are chucked away each year, while cotton buds flushed down the toilet are one of the biggest causes of marine pollution, and often end up being eaten by wildlife.
Last night ECDC agreed to endorse the government’s 25 year environmental plan.
Cllr Anna Bailey, who tabled the motion, said: “If all the plastic bottles that are not collected for recycling in the UK each year were placed end to end, they would go around the world 31 times.
“That is a huge amount of plastic which is damaging our seas and eco-systems. It is clear that wide-scale change is required across the whole of society to reduce our reliance on plastics, keep the plastics we do use in the economy for as long as possible and  to keep all plastic out of our oceans and seas.”
ECDC and its trading companies plan to eliminate “unnecessary and problematic” plastic packaging within the council and ensure the rest is reusable, recyclable or compostable.
Other aims are to make recycling easier within East Cambridgeshire and encourage businesses to increase recycled content in any plastic packaging they use.
The council has pledged to “impassion and enable” residents and businesses to “play their part” in cutting down on plastic packaging waste and litter.
Cllr Bill Hunt said the purge on plastics was the “start of a great journey”, adding that council staff and members would be “relentless” in their efforts to achieve their goals.
During the debate Ely Markets was singled out for special mention in its work to tackle the problem.

The Ely Markets team has recognised changing shopping habits, with people increasingly buying smaller amounts, more flexibly, more often and has responded by introducing new mini-markets on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The team also actively encourages people to bring their own reusable shopping bags, coffee cups and containers.
Cllr Richard Hobbs said “Traders are happy to weigh fruit and veg directly into people’s own shopping bags and we are seeing more and more people arriving at Ely Markets with their own reusable coffee cup and containers.”
Since the 5p charge for plastic bags came into effect, their use has plummeted by an astonishing 90% – meaning that 9 billion fewer bags are in circulation.

Silver Oak Coffee has unveiled its brew-ti-ful coffee rig to coincide with the launch of Ely Mini Markets today.

Susanne Stent, who runs Silver Oak with husband Bruce, told Spotted in Ely that since they first starting roasting their own coffee, residents have become a lot more discerning.
“The coffee market has really changed over the last five years. People have become a lot more knowledgeable and expect great coffee.”
To celebrate the growth of their business, the couple commissioned Chris Bonwick, of Masters in Sevenoaks, Kent, to design and build the two-storey coffee rig.

Seating 15 people upstairs, it measures 6m by 2.4m packed down and about 9m by 3.5m rigged.
Chris said: “We’ve built all sorts of units but nothing of this scale and nothing on two storeys. As far as I know this is the first two storey coffee trailer.
“One of the biggest challenges was being able to set it up quickly. It had to be under three-and-a-half tonnes so it’s keeping everything lightweight.”

The mobile cafe features artwork by Steph Thelwell, from Ely, who regularly sits in the coffee gazebo on a Sunday, sketching scenes from Ely Market. It shows Bruce roasting coffee beans at Silver Oak’s micro roastery in Black Bank Road.

The Stents started off roasting coffee at their garage but decided to rent out a business unit in 2016. Their roastery is based opposite Three Blind Mice Brewery and next door to The Ely Gin Company and Gourmet Brownie – all highly successful local businesses. 
Susanne said: “We’ve gone from roasting once every two weeks to sometimes roasting twice a week. The demand in Ely has really grown.”
Despite being a regular fixture at bustling Stamford and Cambridge Markets, Ely Market holds a special place for the couple as this was the first market they traded at.

When East Cambridgeshire District Council asked them to trade in Ely six days a week, they jumped at the chance.
Susanne said: “The concept of the mini market is a great one. You don’t have to buy lots of food every week with all the packaging – it’s better to buy little and often. It’s the same with our coffee. People can bring bags back to us and they get recycled in Huntingdon. All the spoons, cups and lids are biodegradable and compostable.”

As well as trading ecologically, the Stents try to operate in an ethical manner, sourcing their coffee beans from small farms and co-operatives with a good track record in their communities.
“Not only is it ethical but it’s good quality as well.”

Julia Davis, of Ely Markets, hopes the new mini markets will also help residents cut down on food waste and packaging by buying little and often from local traders.
“If people in Ely choose to make a few small changes to the way they shop then together we can make a big difference.
“Remember your shopping bags on market days and bring along a re-usable coffee cup too. We’d love to see people start bringing their own containers for cakes and pastries.”
The first mini market will be launched on April 3 – with subsequent mini markets trading between 8.30am and 3.30pm every Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, selling essentials such as fruit and vegetables, coffee, cheese and bread.

These new, smaller markets will complement larger, well-established markets on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.
Julia said: “Our new mini markets give you the chance to get more of what you want, when you want it. They’ll make everyday shopping easier and will encourage people to shop locally and support small producers…
“It’s perfect for when you’re popping into town on your lunch break, or after you’ve dropped the kids off at school. And once you’ve finished your shopping Silver Oak Coffee will be there to keep you supplied with delicious locally-roasted coffee”.
Buying little and often from a local market isn’t just convenient – it also reduces food waste and cuts down on packaging while supporting the local economy.
“We want our markets to lead the way in helping local residents to take a more thoughtful approach to their shopping.”
According to Greenpeace, an estimated 12.7 million tonnes of plastic end up in our oceans year year – the equivalent of a truck load of rubbish each minute.
In a further bid to encourage environmentally friendly shopping, the new mini markets will join the #PlasticFreeFriday movement on social media, with prizes given out on a regular basis, including re-usable coffee cups, bags and containers.
On Wednesday, April 4, there will be a special launch day to coincide with the Easter school holiday, promising extra stalls, activities and the chance to meet Michael Recycle, Ely’s local eco-hero, and to win an Ely Markets “Bring Your Own” goody bag.

This Wednesday (December 6) kicks off a trio of Ely Market Festive Lates, a family friendly shopping night promising sumptuous street food, live music and entertainment as well as a host of gift stalls.

Mulled wine, mince pieces, cocktails and artisan hot chocolate will also be on offer during the three Festive Lates, running from 4pm till 8.30pm on Ely Market Place on December 6, 13 and 20.

As the countdown to Christmas ramps up, the week before the big day will offer a celebration of markets to help shoppers grab some last minute presents and treat themselves to a variety of food.
This includes Christmas Mini-Markets on December 18 to 20, from 10am until 3pm.
If that’s not enough to get you into the festive spirit, there’s the annual Special Christmas Market on December 22, from 8.30am to 3.30pm, offering a selection of festive stalls including crafts, artisan food & drink, street food, vintage and Farmers Market producers with seasonal gifts and entertainment.
Plus there will also be a very special visitor all the way from the North Pole.
These special events are in addition to Ely Markets’ regular weekly Charter Market on Thursdays, Craft, Food and Vintage Market on Saturdays and Sunday Market, which will all be taking place as scheduled with a “festive sparkle”.

Meanwhile Ely Market Place will feature a vintage market as well as its regular Sunday Market stalls.
Both markets will take place from 10am to 4pm on Sunday April 30 and Bank Holiday Monday, May 1.

With just over a week to go until Ely Festive Lates is launched, the team behind Ely Markets are gearing up for a series of events to get shoppers into the Christmas spirit and celebrate the rich diversity of local businesses.

Julia Davis, of Ely Markets, says: “We are really looking forward to the launch of the Ely Markets Festive Lates complementing our regular weekly markets.
“We know that our visitors will find loads of delicious food, unique gifts that support local businesses and a wonderful atmosphere!
“We are very proud of the traders on our Craft and Collectables market on a Saturday and this will be a great chance for more people to discover their products.
“The Ely Festive Lates are part of our special events on Ely Markets showcasing the diverse choice for all tastes we have all year round.”

The first Festive Late will take place on Thursday, November 17, with further late night markets running every Thursday from 4.30pm to 8.30pm in the run up to Christmas.
These family-friendly evenings will be bursting with street food, shopping and live music on the market square.
Join them for mulled wine, mince pies and the chance to buy incredible gifts from local makers.
There will be special festive guests for the children and a covered seating area to drink, eat and browse next to the Christmas tree.
Enjoy street food from Choux Stopper, I am Dumpling and more under the fairy lights while stocking up on perfect gifts from regular Ely Market traders such as Oriolo’s jewellery, Jo Clark Designs cards, prints and mugs and Buster and Lou’s gifts for the pet-lover in your life.
SilverOak coffee will be keeping everyone warm with their home-roasted coffees and luxurious hot chocolates – there’s even been talk of espresso martinis.

Yesterday’s Ely Vegan Fair – the city’s first – drew massive crowds from across the region, wanting to try some animal free treats.

Vegans, veggies and meat eaters alike commented on the high standard of food, ranging from vegan Scotch “eggs” to Caribbean street food and cakes galore. On the event’s Facebook page, many people are already calling for the fair to be a regular feature.

Stallholders included Joanne Penny, Broken Spoon, The River Kitchen, Raw + Delicious, A Vegetative State, Vegan Sweet Tooth, Organic Alex, Moonbeam Food Company, Lick Caribbean, Gourmet Vegan, Wandering Yak, Jo Clark, Food! By Lizzi, Audrey’s Cakes, Arbonne Cosmetics, Gaia’s Kitchen, Kemp-Beer, L’Atypique Wines, Tropic Skincare, Novi + Stand-Up, Minkie Moo Bakery, Moriaty’s Tea and Coffee, Curry with Love, Replete Flatbreads, Sun and Moon Juice and Moral Munch.

The crowds were also entertained by face painting and live music from Ely busking legend Jacen Bruce.
Ely Vegan Fair is the latest in a series of specialised events organised by Ely Markets to bring people to the city centre and enjoy a vast range of high quality produce.


From November 17, Ely Markets will be hosting another new event, called Ely Festive Lates, getting shoppers into the Christmas spirit. Festive Lates will run every Thursday in the run up to Christmas, from 4.30pm to 8.30pm.

From tomorrow (Saturday August 27) until Bank Holiday Monday (August 29), visitors to Ely Market can indulge in what the visiting continental market has to offer.
An array of food stalls will hold everything from freshly made paella, crepes and tartiflette to artisanal cheese, breads, olive oils and preserves. There will also be a variety of continental crafts available, including handmade Provençal soaps, amber jewellery, woodcarvings, objets d’art and fashion accessories.

On Saturday the continental market will be situated on Ely High Street alongside the weekly Craft and Collectables market and Farmers’ Market, on Market Place and Dolphin Lane.
It will then relocate to Ely Market Place alongside the weekly Sunday and bank holiday markets for Sunday and Monday. The market will be open from 10am until 4pm for all three days.

Emma Grima, Director of Corporate & Commercial Services, said: “The continental market brings a taste of summer to the city and complements our regular weekend Ely Markets perfectly. There’s something for all the family, whether you want to sample the delicious continental food or browse for a special gift.  The atmosphere is sure to be buzzing throughout the weekend and I hope residents and visitors alike take advantage of what Ely Markets have to offer.”
You’ll also find all your favourite Ely Markets stalls on the regular weekly Saturday Craft & Collectables Market, Farmers’ Market and Sunday Market alongside the Continental visitors this weekend.
