Watch Out, Watch Out, The Saxons Are About!

Join us for an Anglo Saxon living history day at Ely Museum

This weekend, on Saturday 28th January, the Anglo Saxons are invading Ely Museum! Join us for a living history day and meet the reenactors. Learn about life as a Saxon and see our newest temporary exhibition “Burial of a Princess? Treasures from a Saxon cemetery in Ely”

With experts from Anglo Saxon re-enactment group, Grantanbrycg, there will be lots to enjoy on the day finding out what life was like as an Anglo Saxon, about their weapons, textiles, games, and fishing. See leather, metal and wood crafts being made too, alongside learning more about Saxon money and music.

Emily Allen, Community Engagement Officer at Ely Museum says; “Bringing history to life with groups like Grantanbrycg is a such a fantastic way to learn more whilst also having a lot of fun. We’re excited to see the museum taken over by the Saxons for the day and find out more about their way of life.”

This is also a great opportunity to visit our newest temporary exhibition at the museum, ‘Burial of a Princess? Treasures from a Saxon cemetery in Ely’ which features beautiful treasures from an Anglo Saxon cemetery found in Ely by housing developers in the early 2000s. With gem stones and gold, the young girl this grave belonged to must have been important. Perhaps she was even a princess?

The exhibition and all the fun activities on Saturday are included with your usual museum ticket or annual pass. Join us from 10:30am on the day.
