77 years ago on the 16th and 17th May Nineteen Lancaster bombers from 617 Squadron took off on operation Chastise to bomb the Dams of the German industrial heartland using purpose-built “bouncing bombs” developed by the British engineering genius Barnes Wallis.
The operation later became known as the Dam Busters Raid but tragically 56 aircrew were lost that night.
Leading Cadet Harry Coleman is just one of Ely’s cadets who have been working on their Avro Lancaster bomber model kits over the past few weeks whilst in lockdown.
Here is a breif photographic record of Harry’s progress and the completion of his model kit.
Over two dozen cadets from Ely have been completing World War Two era aircraft models to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of VE Day and the end of The War in Europe.
