Daily commuters by car to Cambridge were faced with long delays as they woke to find the A10 closed between Stretham and Waterbeach.
The articulated lorry was carrying a full load of potatoes in sacks along the major roadway between Cambridge and Ely at approximately 4:30 this morning and came off the highway at a bend between Stretham and Chittering. No one was injured.
Sgt Blackford from Cambridgeshire Police said in a Facebook status, “The incident has caused a considerable amount of disruption to local traffic but this being said we can all be grateful that – other than the vehicle itself – no other damage or injury has been caused.”
Local traffic was diverted via Wilburton and Wicken from the Stretham roundabout and caused long tailbacks at Twenty Pence Road, Histon, Haddenham, Cottenham and Soham as commuters tried to find alternative routes. Some people reporting on Spotted in Ely that they were delays of over an hour during peak times.
The road was eventually open some 8 1/2 hours after the accident.
