Ely Air Cadets Back in Business

In advance of 1094 City of Ely Squadron reopening this Monday night, last Saturday morning we once again made the long drive to RAF Syerston and to 644 Volunteer Gliding Squadron.

On the 19th October 2019, Ely’s Cadet Flight Sergeant Donoghue and Senior Cadet Bausor, arrived at RAF Syerston to begin thier Gliding Scholarship course with the RAFAC Gliding Instructors of 644 Volunteer Gliding Squadron who would be training them as solo glider pilots.

Nobody could have predicted back then that they would be the record holders for the longest SGS Course in the history of The Air Training Corps.

Rory and Jake had been selected from numerous applicants for gliding scholarships and they were scheduled to return each Saturday to RAF Syerston to continue thier training until they qualified as solo glider pilot’s.

Despite a stormy start to their training with high winds and record breaking rainfall interrupting flying on several weekends, both cadets made superb progress. Both Rory and Jake were preparing for thier their Pre-Solo flight assessments when The National lockdown was announced and all RAF Air Cadet face to face activities were suspended.

Today (Saturday 12th December), more than a year later, Cadet Warrant Officer Donoghue and Corporal Bausor returned to Syerston to recommence thier glider pilot training.

It has been a long wait for the return to face to face cadet activities, especially flying and gliding, with so many cadets across the whole country missing out this year on so many wonderful opportunities.

However, today was a very important step on the road to getting back to what we do as Air Cadets and getting back in the air.

Royal Air Force Air Cadet Squadron’s across the UK are preparing to open thier doors to thier Cadets once again.
