Ely Cricket Club Weekend Match Report

City of Ely 1st XI’s 100% record remains intact after a victory over Histon.

Due to the absence of captain and regular opener Michael Sellers, a re-jigged batting order saw Jonny Wallace and Ben Cross at the top of the order and they set a good platform, Cross looking particularly fluent for his 58. This platform was capitalised on by Tom Beaumont who top scored with 75, and Ed Aniskowicz with 44. Ely finished on 249 for 6, which appeared to be above par for the surface.

In the reply, Histon did get off to a solid start but the dismissal of captain Stuart Cronin for 47 just before drinks was the turning point. Ely tightened the screw with some improved bowling after this as Richard Vincett and Owen Buxton both helped themselves to 3 wickets as Histon were bowled out for 174, falling 75 runs short. Ely’s fourth victory in a row keeps them at the top of the table where they are joined by Wilburton.

Sunday saw Cricketers young and old(er) gather at the Paradise for the Ely CC Family Fun Day. The morning saw a number of activities for junior players which included the opportunity to test their bowling speeds.

A T20 exhibition match formed the afternoon entertainment with a close game won by Team Bailey. The club would like to thank all that attended and made the event such a success. Planning for the 2020 Fund Day is already underway!
