This Friday sees the long-awaited occasion of the year – National Fish & Chip Day – giving you the chance to celebrate our favourite dish and the quality work that has gone into making it the national staple that it is today. Friday 7th June 2019 is National Fish & Chip Day’s fourth year, bringing together everyone from fish and chip shops, restaurants and retailers, to the fisherman and farmers who provide the sustainable and natural ingredients. Established by The National Edible Oil Distributors’ Association (NEODA), the event aims to celebrate the efforts needed to create this iconic family dish, and promote the good quality, great tasting fish and chips that everyone knows and loves to eat. Did you know Ely is the epicentre of fish and chips, Isle of Ely Produce send around 2.5 million bags of potatoes  (80 million portions of chips)into fish and chip shops every year, and this region’s farmers grow around 30% of all the potatoes used nationally. Also, the top magazine for fish and chip shop owners Chippy Chat is published by Ely resident Austen Dack!

What’s happening?

Fish and chip shops from across the UK will be participating in the day’s special activities to promote the event in their local area, however any fish and chip shop or food establishment can get involved through social media, using the hashtag #NationalFishandChipDay. Why not visit your local chippy or restaurant this Friday and join in the celebration?

Here are 5 amazing facts to help you enjoy National Fish & Chip Day this Friday! Did you know that a portion of fish and chips has third fewer calories than other popular takeaways? You can even get a third of your daily vitamin C from a portion of chips. In fact, fish and chips make a balanced, nutritious meal. They provide a valuable source of protein, fibre, iron and vitamins. There are currently in the region of 10,500 specialist fish and chip shops in the UK. These dramatically outnumber other fast food outlets: McDonald’s has only 1,200 outlets, Kentucky Fried Chicken 840. British consumers eat some 382 million portions of fish and chips every year. The most popular place for fish and chips is Belfast. In Manchester gravy is the preferred accompaniment.
