It's 200 years since The Littleport & Ely Riots of 1816

The Field Theatre Group are delighted to announce that they have received a Heritage Lottery grant for activities to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Littleport and Ely Riots.
Riot in the Bllod - Littleport RiotsFollowing on from the success of our recent community projects, Littleport Festival Fourteen and The Horseman’s Word, residents are invited to participate in a variety of activities.
To get the ball rolling The Field are hosting a series of free history workshops on the following dates.
13 & 27 Feb, 12 & 26 March, 9 & 23 April. (2 till 4pm)
The sessions will be held at the Adams Heritage Centre, 17 Main St Littleport.
Suitable for all ages. Children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult.
There are 6 sessions in total. Session 3 will consist of a guided tour of the ‘riot trail’ and Session 5 will be an excursion to Ely to visit key sites connected with the riots. Free transport will be arranged for this.
These workshop will go towards the creation of a community documentary ( Riot in the Blood) which will document the riots and the events leading up to them.
The Field will recreate the events, using film, stills photography and a narrative.
We are looking for residents of all ages to participate in this: as technicians and crew, re-enactors or researchers. We are particularly interested in hearing from anyone who is a descendent of any of the convicted rioters, as these links to the present day form an important part of the project.
Proclamation of 1916
We will also be leading a procession in June of next year, to lay wreaths on the unmarked grave of the five hanged men from Littleport.
This commemorative procession has been funded by Littleport Parish Council.
There are activities for families too. A series of costumed re-enactment walks combined with a treasure hunt for younger children will take place around Littleport during May of next year.
Anyone who is interested in taking part please contact.
These are just some of the various commemorative activities planned in Littleport this year.
