A man from Ely will be tackling the London Marathon for Diabetes UK after living with Type 1 diabetes since he was a teenager.
The London Marathon, run on 24 April 2016, sees dozens of Team Diabetes UK runners take to the streets to run the 26.2 mile course.
Paul Sycamore, 32, is running the marathon because he wants to raise money for Diabetes UK and in honour of the support he has received from Addenbrooke’s Hospital.
Paul, who is a plumber for his local company PS Plumbing Services, has lived with the condition since he was 13 years old and says it was a shock to the system when he was diagnosed, despite being aware of Type 1 diabetes as his own father has lived with it since he was 14 years old.
Paul has been training hard for the event and said: “My dad and I have had a lot of advice, support and care over the years and I wanted to give something back.
“I started running a few years ago with a group of friends, we are known as ‘Team Nancy’ in memory of my best friend’s mum who died from cancer. We have run a few half marathons, including the Cambridge Half Marathon and raised more than £5,000.
“None of my friends got a place in this year’s London Marathon, so I’m doing it on my own, but I’m sure loads of them will come along to support me on the day.”
Teresa Strange, Diabetes UK Eastern Fundraiser, said: “The London Marathon is an amazing event to be a part of. The months of training and dedication from Paul will be turned in April into a one-of-a-kind way to see London at its best. Together with the rest of Team Diabetes UK they will raise vital funds to help people living with diabetes.
“Every penny raised will help us to support the 3.5 million people diagnosed with diabetes in the UK so please give generously to back Paul and support their amazing effort.”
