The first ball was served at 5am and after 165 games the final rally was played out with Becky Lemkow, and counted down by jubilant members and supporters.  

More than 30 members and guests – including Jack’s Mum – took part in the event, either partnering with Jack or pairing up as opponents, and many more popped down to offer their support, sweets, coffee and cake!

After the event, Jack said “I want to thank everyone for their support and donations. It means so much to see so many members come together and get behind this event. What an amazing club! Five years ago, I lost my stepdad to cancer and Macmillan were incredible. They helped so much and gave us the opportunity to spend his final days with us at home.”

This is event is part of a very busy summer for ETC. The Diversity and Inclusion Team hosted a popular stall at Ely Pride, ahead of the Diversity Open Day taking place at the Hive on Sunday 11th August.

And, in a triple whammy, the Men’s 1st, 2nd and 3rd teams all achieved promotions in the Cambridgeshire Dunlop LTA Summer Leagues.

Ely Men’s 2nd and 4th teams are currently topping Divisions 7 and 13 respectively, whilst Ely’s Women’s 2nd team and Men’s 3rd team sit second in Divisions 6 and 10 with a game in hand for each. The Women’s 3rd team and Men’s 1st Team both currently sit joint 3rd in Divisions 8 and 6, and both teams have a game in hand.

David Field, in his first season as 4th Team Captain, said: “this is a strong start to the summer league season for us, and we’re looking forward to pushing on and trying to clinch one of the two promotion spots.”

Rachel Peacock, Ely Tennis Club Chair, said “This ongoing success is fantastic for our Club and the Ely Community, and the recent introduction of team coaching sessions with Head Coach Jack Pearson will no doubt be having an impact.And the club celebrated the Roman Garos tournament in Paris with a suitable Gallic themed event in June where players were treated to French style games and food. Ross Peers Sports Centre in Soham has received a Community Sports Fund grant of £179,500 towards the £228,000 cost of replacing the roof which leaks onto the sports hall floor.

Littleport Leisure Centre has been awarded £12,000 towards the £15,000 cost of sanding, re-sealing and re-marking its sports hall floor.

And, Ely Outdoor Sports Association, the umbrella organisation for Ely Rugby Club, Ely Hockey Club, Ely Tennis Club and a number of other clubs and groups, will receive £39,100 towards the cost of refurbishing toilets.

The money has been awarded as part of the District Council’s new £300,000 Community Sport Fund Scheme 2022-2025.

The fund has been created to enable leisure providers to make sustainable improvements to the facilities they offer residents.

Grants can be used to help pay for capital projects, such as recladding or refurbishing sports halls, or for adding new sports or IT equipment.

The money can also be spent on improving services in order to increase the number of people using each sports centre.

Councillor Julia Huffer, Chair of the Operational Services Committee which approved the grants at its meeting on 14 November 2022, said: “The Ross Peers Sports Hall, Littleport Leisure Centre and Ely Outdoor Sports Association are all self- financing with user charges generally covering their normal operating costs. But this leaves no significant reserves or funds for reinvestment in their facilities or services.

“Previously the district council invested £32,000 a year in sports centres in the form of leisure grants, which effectively helped them complete smaller, one-off projects.

“This new £300,000 pot, which replaces the Leisure Grants, will enable not-for-profit sports facilities to make significant improvements to their business, which in turn will attract more people to each sports centre.”

Most recently the Ely Women’s Super Seniors team opened their account with a thrilling and comprehensive 5-1 victory against Milton in the Cambs Super Senior’s League, and the Men’s Super Seniors managed a draw in a very close match against Great Shelford Men’s. 

In their last match of the season, Ely Women’s 2nd Team finished with a flourish, beating Papworth 6-2. Pair 1 won all four of their sets, taking the first set 6-2 and then had to battle in a Tie break for the second set. Against the second couple they were comfortable victors with a score line of 6-1 and 6-2. Pair 2 drew both of their matches 6-4,0-6 against the first pair and 3-6,7-5 against pair two. Papworth were a strong opposition and Ely had to work very hard, and stay patient in some challenging long rallies. 

In the Mixed Doubles, Ely 2nd Team and 3rd Team managed victories on the same evening. The 2nd Team were able to hold off a valiant effort from Longstanton 1st Team to win 5-3, whilst the 3rd Team beat Cambourne 3rd Team, also with a score of 5-3. After the match the teams sat together in the evening sun and enjoyed a delicious tea, courtesy of Peacocks. 

More recently, the Ely Mixed 1st Team beat Cambridge Mixed 4th team 5-3 in Division 5, and Ely Mixed 2nd Team defeated Huntingdon Mixed 2nd Team to see them go top of Division 8.

Not to be outdone, the Men’s 2nd team also capped an unbeaten season with a 6-2 victory over Great Shelford Men’s team on Saturday.

Both teams have travelled the length and breadth of Cambridgeshire over the past few months and have met some great people along the way. From being burned on the clay courts of Newmarket to meeting a new generation of highly talented junior players at Royston. Afternoon tea and cake; strawberries and scones, and plenty of new balls!

Regular team training sessions and the invaluable input of the new coaching team from inspire2coach are widely believed to be contributing factors in this season’s success, and the growing strength and depth of the club.

Jason Morley, Ely Tennis Club’s Chair said, “This is a fantastic achievement for Ely Tennis Club’s teams, and we look forward to building on this success in the Mixed Doubles leagues that are about to begin, and in the Winter Leagues that will be starting later in the year.”

10is Academy’s director and coach Sebastien Scaux says his young side is learning all the time and can improve – despite an 8-0 away defeat over Ely TC.

“The girls went out and did well. It was a good match, and I know they’ve got it in them to win their first match.”

“We had two tight matches and most importantly we started to display the style we have been working on during training.”

”It is important to remember that most of the 10is Academy players have played less than 10 tennis matches in their lives. They are players who never had the opportunity to play but found a place that believes in them.”

“The home team had good, experienced players who knew how to win matches. They had a comfortable win in the end, but it was a positive match for 10is Academy. It was a good game to come down and watch and the on-court atmosphere was very pleasant.”

Sebastien is aware of the tough challenges his tennis competitors are facing but remains positive.

“I’ve seen plenty of progress and the sets are getting closer. Soon when we will start winning a set here and there, belief will grow, and wins will come. It’s good for the girls as they are picking up that bit of experience; everything is a bonus for us this season.”

Sebastien said: “It would have been nice to have a win on the last day, but we are working on something bigger: what we are building is more than just tennis!We are creating an environment where children and adults work together and learn from each other, a club where young players and adults respect for each other”.

For the last match of the year (away at Cambourne LTC), 10is Academy lined up an “intergenerational” team where children as young as 13 years old played alongside their mother or father. The team saw the Glenister girls mixed with the McGuinness boys.

A rain interrupted match saw Cambourne LTC win 8-0 with the best performance for the Ely based team coming from Peter and Tia.Captain of the day Samantha Glenister paid tribute to her team-mates: “Cambourne players didn’t hold back in playing against the young players. Peter and Tia (13) did very well, having several games going to Deuce. My partner Charlie (13) was good, he has awesome power, great shots and good behaviour”.

Cambourne players were full of praises for the young players especially on how hard they battled.

This year showed the team needs more match experience to reduce unforced errors, but it also left the team with the desire to work harder and play more matches. 10is Academy players will be back training from September 6th 2021.

Everyone is welcomed to join the classes regardless of their level. 10is Academy offer classes for junior and adults from total beginner to performance players.

In a game full of quality and excitement, neither side were able to grab the opportunity that could make a difference.

Alisa and Lewis drew against Ely TC’s 1st pair in a much anticipated rubber. Despite losing the 1st set 2/6 the 10is pair rallied to reverse the score and take the 2nd set 6/2.

10is Academy’s best chance to take the lead rested on Disa and Richard who won their first set 6/4 but agonisingly lost the second set 5/7 after serving for the match.

“As usual in term of serving and groundstroke we are solid” said Scaux, “but we will have to work on our net play. Without a few loose volleys the result could have been very different but I am really proud of Disa and Richard who gave everything”.

It was a very close encounter with both teams not only drawing 4 sets all but also 37 games all.

The draw against a very strong Ely TC team led to an unsatisfactory conclusion for the 10is team as it ended their chance of promotion despite finishing above their local rivals.

The 10is team has learnt a lot and gain some valuable experience this year.

Training will start in September with the winter league in sight and coming back stronger for the next summer league.

The 1st team played away at Newmarket LTC and the away 1st pair (Alisa and Tom) took 3 out 4 sets while the 2nd pair (Disa and Jordan) despite some scintillant tennis did not manage to take a set giving Newmarket a 3 sets to 5 victory overall.

This defeat is a setback in their quest to gain promotion in their first season and marked the end of the unbeaten run. Nevertheless 10is Academy’s players remain in a good position to avoid relegation.

“I’ve got no complaints with the way the players played. The only thing missing was the finishing.” Sebastien Scaux said. “There was very little between the two teams, but I thought that would be the case because Newmarket had picked up an experienced team.”

“After the first two rubbers, we looked in control. Our serving and baseline game was really good but what let us down was our quality to finish at the net and impatience trying to hit winners from all parts of the court”.

The pivotal moment came when Tom injured his groin shortly followed by Alisa pulling a back muscle. They still managed to win their first match 6/0 7/6 and draw their second match 6/4 4/6.The 2nd pair made of Jordan and Disa played together for the 1st time, and they fought hard but unfortunately, couldn’t take their chance and lost their rubbers. 6/4 7/5 and 7/6 6/1. On Saturday evening, the mixed 2nd team slipped to a 5-3 defeat at home.

After the half way mark, Cottenham was leading 3 sets to 1, leaving 10is Academy needing to win the remaining 4 sets to win the match but the Ely based players could only managed a draw. Sebastien Scaux was left hopeful after watching the majority of his players get another match under their belt.

“It was another great experience for us,” he said. “We did really well and deserved at least a draw.”

“The team is made of many players who never played official matches and they need to gain some experience. The result is what it is, but the goal was to accumulate matches and gain experience. Our young players (Sam and Ciara) have now played 2 matches and the difference between their first match and the one they played this week is unbelievable: they are quickly improving. We need to give them a bit more game time but it is coming along well.”

Sebastien was also keen to praise the attitude of his new-look squad and added: “I’m really pleased with the adult players. Their attitude has been first class throughout the season. They are new to matches and not only do they have to focus on their game but also support our young players. The group made up of teens and adults is gelling nicely. All of them have the desire to improve and we look technically strong.”

Next the 1st pair will welcome Haslingfield on Saturday 31/07/21 while the 2nd pair will go to Cambourne on 19/08/21.

All of the talk this week heading into this one was on the absence of superstar Toby Huffer but in his absence, it was head coach Sebastien Scaux who took the reins. Sebastien was a constant threat from the get-go. 

After Gransdens surprisingly took a 3/0 lead in the first set against Alisa and Sebastien, the 10is Academy pair came back to take the first set 7/5. The pair would put their blistering forehands on full display to take the second set 6/4. 

Minutes later, the 2nd pair made of Michael and Georgia eased to a 6/1 6/4 win against Gransdens 2nd pair. It was Michael’s first as a player of 10is Academy. 

Georgia and Alisa are young up-and-coming star who played very strongly.  

The match would finish 8 sets to 0 to the visiting team, as 10is Academy are registering their first victory. 

Up next, 10is Academy 2nd team was playing away at Ely Tennis Club for the first Ely derby ever. 

Their quest to win their first match, will have to wait another week, at least until they welcome Cottenham on Saturday 24th July 2021. 

10is Academy put on 2 of their future stars as their 1st pair: Ciara (14) and Michael (17). While captain Chris was paired with Tru (14). 

At Ely Tennis Club, the promising 10is Academy young players did not demerit. They battled hard and kept their heads up all the way to the end. 

“Launching the next generation is 10is Academy’s goal” said 10is Academy Director, Sebastien Scaux. “They have not won today but they are gaining valuable experience. I am really proud of their attitude and progresses and I know this defeat will help them to learn and grow stronger.”

But the young team led by captain Chris Hemmings have won our hearts and our minds with their rousing performances, their stoicism, and their honesty. Despite a heavy loss (8-0 to Ely TC) Chris was full of compliments for the team: “In the summer sun, we battled hard but, in the end, experience won the match for Ely TC. So many Deuce games, so many clos calls but frustratingly it wasn’t this young side’s day. Still their enthusiasm never faltered.”

It is the beginning of 10is Academy’s quiet revolution: 10is Academy and its players are still learning; they have not yet reached their peak. Sebastien added “This year has been a great success. Despite the lockdowns, 10is Academy has fielded over 12 tennis teams ranging from 9-year-old to adults, we have been able to win a few of leagues and have launched so many new players. Hopefully there is a lot more to come soon.” 

Ciara, Tru and Michael are the embodiment of that revolution. The role they have played over the last month for 10is Academy suggests they are great quality players not necessarily in the making, but in the here and now. 

There is much to admire about this likeable crop of young role models; much to be excited about in this exhilarating group of local tennis players.

The post The 10is Academy Mixed 1st Team is off and Running at the 2021 LTA Dunlop Competition while the 2nd Team Loses First Ever Ely Derby appeared first on Spotted in Ely.

The car park at Ely Outdoor Sports Association (EOSA) is desperately in need of resurfacing but will cost £45k to do so!

Our goal is to fundraise £10k using GoFundMe and other fundraising activities, and then secure government grants and Council support to complete the funding.

EOSA is a not-for-profit organisation run by volunteers, that provides sporting and social facilities for its member clubs Ely Tigers Rugby Club, Ely City Hockey Club and Ely Tennis Club as well as for the wider Ely community as a whole. A number of local adult and junior football clubs, a local school and a training provider use the facilities on a regular basis and the Clubhouse is regularly hired out for parties and events in non-COVID times.

The car park is used every day and is full most evenings and weekends when the sports clubs are training or playing matches.

Recent refurbishments to the Clubhouse and the replacement of the astro pitch have enabled EOSA to start to generate income through the hire of its facilities but even before COVID restricted the use of our facilities, it was going to take many years to raise the money needed for this large capital outlay.

It currently costs about £1,000 each year to just fill the potholes with tarmac. This year, to save money, our Directors temporarily filled the holes themselves.

This GoFundMe is the start of the fundraising campaign to raise the necessary monies for the car park.

We hope that by the generosity of members of the public and by applying for local grants, we can raise enough to resurface the car park in the next 12 months.

There will be drills and lots of different games to play that will help improve your stamina, and tennis skills such as running, sprinting, side shuffles and tennis strokes. Team Captain, Rachel Peacock, congratulating the players, said Ely Tennis Club is a friendly fun club offering social and competitive play all-year round.

More than eight hours of tennis saw six adult finals and six plate finals all being contested at the Ely Outdoor Sports Association.

First on court were the “Over 60’s mixed doubles”. Anne Hefferman paired with Stephen Watts battled over 2 hours against Patricia Gray and with Chris Heath to finally take the title (2/6 6/2 6/3)

The men’s doubles final was won by Sebastien Scaux and Tom Shackleton. Sebastien and Tom were the defending champions but were pushed to the limits by Julian Brooks and Tim Glossop. Sebastien and Tom retained their title in three sets (4/6 6/4 7/5) in a high quality and very entertaining match.

Sebastien Scaux and Tom Shackleton were back on court but this time on opposite sides of the net to play the men’s singles final. Head coach Sebastien overcame first-time finalist and doubles partner, Tom Shackleton, in straight sets (6/4 6/1).

The ladies singles final saw two first time contestants: Rebecca Tomkins and Georgia Shields. 10is Academy player Georgia Shields won through a nervous final (6/4 6/2) . This was the first time that 13-year-old Georgia had entered the senior championships.

The ladies’ doubles was won again by the defending champions Mary Finney and Sylvia Hansen. 10is coach Fiona Dyer partnered with Andrea Newman tried everything but the champions proved too much, winning in straight sets (6/1 6/2).

The mixed final saw Alisa Chirgadze and Tom Shackleton (playing his third final) beat Julian Brooks and Mary Finney (both of them playing their second final) in a close, entertaining battle, winning a Championship tie-break decider by the narrowest of margins in the second set before taking the title in the last set (3/6 7/6 (9/7) 6/3).

In the Plate tournaments they were victories for: Brenda Pearce and John Darby in the “Over 60’s mixed doubles”, Steve McLaughlin and Steven Gill in the “Men’s doubles”, Rebecca Sheldrick in the the “Ladies”,  10is coach Tim Beddoes in the “Men’s”, Cathy Kirby and Rebecca Sheldrick in the “Ladies doubles”, Sandrine Harvey and Paul Briggs in the “Mixed doubles”.

Tournament organiser Mel Henderson said: “What a great day of tennis we had at the 2018 Ely TC championship Finals.

Touchtennis is the closest thing to five a-side for tennis. Played on a smaller court, with 21” rackets and foam balls, it can be played on any flat space, indoors or outside. The specifically designed ball and unique rules creates a level playing field whereby different abilities can enjoy playing together. It is not unusual to see tennis players being beaten by newcomers.
 

 
It doesn’t matter whether you’re young or old, male or female; the key to the game’s addictive-ness is the enjoyment that comes from repeatedly and intelligently outwitting opponents. Believe us when we say that once you’ve experienced the joy that comes with pulling off a forehand winner after an energetic 30 stroke rally you’ll be dying to repeat the feat over and over!
