Talking Shops with Ely Perspective

Following on from Ely Perspective’s successful Then & Now exhibition in June, at which old photos of Ely shops were displayed juxtaposed with current photos taken from the same angle, we are beginning a new project to capture people’s memories of Ely from days gone by.

We were delighted to see visitors to the exhibition were inspired by seeing the photos of Ely’s old shops to share their memories of growing up in Ely, and their experiences of shops, cinemas, pubs and more from over 60 years ago in some cases.

So, we have collaborated with Ely’s mayor and renowned local historian, Mike Rouse, to put together this ‘drop-in’ session at Ely Museum. Visitors are encouraged to come along and look through collections of old photos of Ely and share their memories either by writing them down or making audio recordings. We will also be displaying some high-quality prints of digitally restored photos of Ely, some of which date back to over 100 years ago.

We would also love people to bring along their own photo collections and if they are happy to do so, we can scan them for preservation. We believe there are a lot of amazing old photos of Ely out there and it would be great to start to build up a more complete history of our fantastic city.

We view this event as the first step in a continuing project to build up a detailed history of Ely through pictures, words, audio and perhaps even film.

Vernon Cross Room, Ely Museum. 3rd and 4th August, 10 – 5pm. Refreshments available.
