As night falls, Ely Cathedral becomes a breathtaking canvas of swirling galaxies, distant planets and abstract interpretations of time, light and creation. The experience invites visitors of all ages to explore humanity’s fascination with space while seeing the Cathedral in a completely new way.

The installation is created by the acclaimed artistic collaboration Luxmuralis, known for transforming historic spaces into powerful, emotionally engaging environments through light, music and narrative.

Visit Ely Cathedral’s Star Dome | 16–21 February 2026

Following the SPACE light show, visitors can also experience the Star Dome at Ely Cathedral during half term, from 16–21 February 2026.

The Star Dome is a fully immersive planetarium experience that transports audiences into a celestial world of stars, planets and galaxies. Guided by an expert in astronomy and astronautics, visitors will explore constellations and discover the myths and legends associated with the night sky.

On Saturday 21 February, a special session will take place in collaboration with Tiptree Stargazers, with telescopes set up outside the Cathedral to observe astronomical objects in the night sky, weather permitting.

The Star Dome offers a calm, educational and memorable experience for all ages.

The colourful, hand-knitted chicks have become a familiar and much-anticipated sight in the Hospice, its charity shops and at local events during the lead-up to Easter. Each chick is sold to raise vital funds that support compassionate end-of-life care for patients and families across Cambridgeshire.

The charity is now inviting knitters of all abilities to get involved by creating chicks to be sold in the run-up to Easter. A knitting pattern is available via the Hospice’s social media channels, and all handmade chicks should be clearly labelled for community fundraising.

Completed chicks can be:

• Dropped off at the Hospice
• Delivered to any Arthur Rank Hospice Charity shop

The hub is located in a cabin within the car park of the Wilburton Flame pub and restaurant and is open 7am to 7pm, Monday to Friday.

Bill Hunt, district councillor for the Stretham Ward which includes Wilburton, said:

“The new hub offers residents and passing motorists a service that has been lacking in the village since Covid.
East Cambridgeshire District Council was delighted to be able to provide a £7,000 grant to help get plans off the ground, and it has been a pleasure to attend the opening ceremony and see those plans come to fruition.”

The hub officially opened its doors on Monday 12 January 2026, with representatives from organisations and groups who supported the project attending the opening.

John Attrill, a member of the community hub management committee, said:

“As a community business, all profits will be returning to the village, making this a fantastic asset to the community in more ways than one.

We have been aided by donations and grants, with wonderful support from the Plunkett Foundation, who support community businesses nationwide, a grant from the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority, as well as funding from East Cambridgeshire District Council.

We truly appreciate the support we have received and look forward to serving our village and the wider community.”

The Tigers started brightly, with Tom Green crossing for the opening try and Matt McCarthy adding the extras. Luke Turner then powered over for a second, extending the lead to 14-0. A handling error gave YM a way back, narrowing the score to 14-5.

Ely responded strongly from a lineout deep in YM territory, with Lee Thompson crashing over and McCarthy converting to make it 21-5. YM struck back with two quick tries — one from a fortunate bounce after a clearance kick — cutting the gap to just two points at the break, 21-19.

The second half saw both sides battle hard for territory. YM edged ahead with an unconverted try before Ely’s Jordan Barnes went over in the corner, McCarthy narrowly missing the conversion. An intercepted pass gifted YM another converted try, taking them 31-26 ahead.

With time running out, Ely showed their resilience as Turner grabbed his second try of the afternoon. McCarthy’s conversion nudged the Tigers in front 33-31. But in dramatic fashion, YM were awarded a penalty in added time — successfully kicking three points to snatch a 34-33 victory.

The Rotary Club of Ely welcomed Michael Ling to its meeting on Thursday 2 October at Ely Bowls Club, where he gave an engaging and informative talk on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Michael, a former teacher, was diagnosed with ADHD as an adult and left his teaching career eight years ago to become a full-time coach supporting children and adults with the condition. He explained that ADHD is an invisible disability affecting around 5% of the population, though many remain undiagnosed.

There are three recognised types of ADHD – Inattentive, Hyperactive-Impulsive and Combined – with symptoms that can include difficulty focusing, fidgeting, restlessness, or impulsive behaviour. Michael highlighted that ADHD has a strong genetic link, with parents who have the condition facing up to a 30% chance of passing it on to their children.

While untreated ADHD can impact wellbeing and reduce life expectancy, Michael emphasised the many positives, including creativity, sensitivity, and entrepreneurial drive. In fact, people with ADHD are three times more likely to start their own business, often thriving in dynamic and innovative environments.

Michael also spoke about current challenges in accessing diagnosis and treatment, noting that waiting times in the UK can vary greatly. However, patients in England have a legal right to choose their provider for non-emergency elective care, which can sometimes speed up the process.

On Thursday 25 September 2025, members of the Rotary Club of Ely gathered at Ely Bowls Club to hear an insightful talk from Sharon Kindleysides, Trustee of the Prickwillow Drainage Engine Museum.

An engineer by profession, Sharon works in Intelligent Transport Systems and shared a fascinating look into the story behind the drainage of the Fens — from its early beginnings to the technological developments that transformed the landscape we know today.

Dating back to the reign of Henry VIII, the monasteries once provided the manpower needed to keep rivers clear. Following their dissolution, drainage became an ongoing challenge. It wasn’t until the 17th century, when Dutch engineer Cornelius Vermuyden introduced innovative land reclamation techniques, that major progress was made. His work included straightening rivers and creating new channels and washes such as the Bedford Level, dramatically improving water flow.

The introduction of steam power in 1831 led to the first pumping station at Prickwillow, fuelled by coal brought up the river from King’s Lynn — a journey that took an entire day to reach full steam pressure. Diesel engines arrived in 1924, followed by electricity in 1958, which remained in use until 1982.

Today, the Prickwillow Drainage Engine Museum continues to preserve and celebrate this important part of local history. The museum has expanded over the years and now houses a wide collection of historic engines. To raise funds for its future, the museum hosts a range of popular community events, including engine birthdays, Science Day, tractor runs, classic car shows and educational visits for schools.

Although the museum closes during winter due to heating costs, it reopens at Easter, and visitors can travel there on the Tiger on Demand bus from Ely Market Square. The service runs Monday to Saturday for just £2 per journey or free for senior citizens with a bus pass. Bookings can be made via the museum’s website.

The Rotary Club of Ely hosted a Tea in a Tent fundraising afternoon at St Mary’s Church Hall on Wednesday 17 September, in aid of ShelterBox, an international disaster relief charity that provides emergency shelter and essentials to families affected by disaster and conflict.

Visitors enjoyed homemade cakes, sandwiches, and refreshments while learning how ShelterBox transforms lives around the world. Each ShelterBox contains a family-sized tent and a selection of items designed to help families survive and rebuild — including solar lights, water storage and purification equipment, thermal blankets, and cooking utensils.

The Rotary Club of Ely has supported ShelterBox for many years, donating several boxes to help people in crisis. ShelterBox was first launched in 2000 as a Millennium Project by the Rotary Club of Helston-Lizard in Cornwall and became a registered charity in 2003. It continues to be a powerful example of how communities can come together to make a global impact.

The hospital is such an important part of our community. From the very first birth, back in 1940, to the care it provides today, it has been there for almost every family in Ely at some point or another. The Charitable Trust raises money to make a real difference for patients and staff by funding extras that go beyond the NHS, such as specialist equipment, welcoming spaces and better facilities.

Over the next year, we will be working closely with the Trust to raise awareness and funds for projects that really matter, including improvements to the urgent treatment centre and children’s services.

The apples, arranged by club member Chris Lee, were gathered by Rotarians Richard Tyler, Viv Doji, Richard Riley, Mike Axford, Kate Devine, Phil Smith, Lilian Umeakunne (who also took the photos), and Benard Arnold. They were joined by Caroline and Bill Hammill, making it a real community effort.

Once picked, members set to work peeling, stewing and bagging the apples ready for freezing. These will later be thawed, filled into individual trays, and topped with pre-cooked crumble to create the much-loved apple crumbles sold at the Fayre.

Ely’s Apple and Harvest Fayre (previously known as Apple Day) takes place on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th October 2025, from 10am to 4pm each day. Visitors can look forward to a true taste of Ely, with the famous Rotary apple crumbles at the heart of the celebrations.

Rosemary Westwell, on behalf of Ely Rotary Club, said:

“This annual tradition brings our members and the community together in such a positive way. It’s hard work, but the results are worth it when we see the smiles on people’s faces enjoying a slice of Ely’s autumn harvest.”

The event was officially opened by the Mayor of Ely, Councillor Mike Banyard, and his wife, Mayoress Mrs Helen Banyard, and brought together families, friends and the local community in the not-for-profit care home’s beautifully decorated gardens.

Local favourite Banjo Man entertained guests with George Formby classics before leading a cheerful rendition of Happy Birthday for resident Hilda Kempton, who marked her milestone 103rd birthday on the day.

The fete was packed with activities including games, face-painting, a craft stall and a raffle. Visitors also included friends from St Mary’s Christ Church. Refreshments were available from the cake stall, while The Orchards’ kitchen team created a special birthday cake for Hilda, presented by the Mayor and Mayoress.

Funds raised from the event will go towards more musical activities, entertainment and trips for residents at the home.

Rebecca Buck, Activities Coordinator at The Orchards, run by not-for-profit care group Greensleeves Care, said:

“It was a fabulous traditional summer fete, and we are so grateful to the Ely community for their generosity in donating prizes, vouchers and their time. The event was a wonderful success, with so much positive feedback from residents and families.

“Celebrating Hilda’s 103rd birthday made the day even more special, and we were delighted to have the Mayor and Mayoress with us to mark the occasion.”

On Thursday 28 August, the Rotary Club of Ely welcomed Sarah Grix from Alzheimer’s Research UK to Ely Bowls Club for an insightful talk on dementia research and prevention.

Dementia in the UK

Sarah explained that Alzheimer’s Research UK is the country’s leading dementia research charity, working towards finding a cure. At present, around one million people in the UK are living with dementia, which costs the economy an estimated £43 billion a year through hospital care and the loss of earnings for carers and partners.

Dementia is caused by the build-up of amyloid and tau proteins in the brain. These proteins damage and eventually kill brain cells and their connections. Silent changes occur years before symptoms appear, making them irreversible by the time they are diagnosed.

Common symptoms include:

• memory loss
• confusion of time and place
• difficulty speaking
• hallucinations and delusions
• personality changes
• reduced social awareness
• neglect of personal care

At present there are no medicines that can cure dementia.

Reducing the risk

While there is no cure yet, Sarah highlighted that lifestyle choices can make a difference. Risk can be reduced by up to 43% through:

• keeping blood pressure under control
• not smoking
• following a balanced diet
• staying physically active
• joining social groups or stimulating the brain with activities
• drinking fewer than 14 units of alcohol a week

Research and funding

Alzheimer’s Research UK collaborates with universities across the UK. In July alone, the charity funded £4 million of research. Last year, it raised £60 million, with 98% of funding coming from public donations, regular givers, and gifts left in wills.

Currently, for every four researchers studying cancer, there is just one working on dementia – underlining the urgent need for further investment.

Wise words are being shared across generations in Ely this summer thanks to a heart-warming initiative at The Orchards care home.

Residents including Jean Grimes, Pamela Maidment and Mary Chandler enjoyed an afternoon in the Garden Room potting herbs for their garden while reflecting on life’s lessons. As part of the Seeds of Wisdom project, they wrote down advice to be shared with family, friends and the wider community.

The activity, run by non-profit Greensleeves Care, celebrates the experiences of residents and how their words can help younger generations make wise decisions and lead fulfilled lives.

Some of the advice included:

• Hilda Kempton, 102: “Always listen to your elders – even though I didn’t!”
• Mary Chandler, 93: “Always be kind and remember to stay humble.”
• Pamela Hicks, 78: “Follow your dreams. I trained as a secretary through evening classes and went on to work in radio astronomy.”
• Pamela Maidment: “Laugh and the world laughs with you. Laugh often.”
• Jean Grimes: “Always be grateful for what you have.”

Rebecca Buck, Activities Co-ordinator at The Orchards, said:
“Our residents have experienced so much throughout their lives and asking them to share their nurturing tips – their seeds of wisdom – was incredibly inspiring. It was also another opportunity for a therapeutic activity together.”

The Seeds of Wisdom project forms part of Greensleeves Care’s nationwide Get Care Wise initiative, which helps families learn more about care options before a crisis arises.

Rebecca added:
“Summer is the perfect opportunity for getting care wise. Families often have a bit more time to think about the additional support an older loved one might need in future. Activities like Seeds of Wisdom remind us that knowledge is power and that it pays to plan ahead where possible.”

Sumaya grew up in Southern Alberta, Canada, where her Jamaican heritage made her feel like an outsider in her early years. She became involved with the Rotary Youth Leadership Award Scheme, raised $25,000 for ShelterBox, and took part in three family exchanges, where she encouraged young people and learnt Spanish.

Her career has included work as a Climate Consultant and in environmental research. With the support of a Rotary Global Scholarship, Sumaya studied at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. Her dissertation, “How Colonial Education in Jamaica Keeps Rural Boys Locked Out of Learning”, highlighted the urgent need for investment in rural schools, including library funding, school equipment and technology.

Now working in International Development in London, Sumaya said she felt privileged to study at Cambridge with the help of Rotary and emphasised the importance of continuing support for education in under-resourced areas.

Looking ahead, Ely Rotary is excited to welcome a new Global Scholar, Leonard Wang, who will arrive in August/September to pursue an MBA in Health and Public Health.

The club’s next fundraising event, Tea in a Tent, will take place on Tuesday 17 September, 3–5pm at St Mary’s Hall, Ely, where tea, cake and donations will be warmly received.

Celebrating 49 years of singing together, the Isle Singers are looking forward to their 50th anniversary later this year. Over the decades, they have performed in a variety of venues, from Trinity College to Ely Railway Station at Christmas in support of the NSPCC.

While members have changed through the years, the group continues to perform beautiful two- and three-part harmonies. They rehearse weekly and enjoy bringing music to audiences across the area, most recently providing the music for an Evening of Music and Poetry at St Andrew’s Church.

The planned repairs are vital to address wear and stress on the original timber framework of the building, dating back to the 13th century.

The conservation project has been carefully designed to respect the house’s heritage, and the team will be working closely with specialist contractors experienced in historic building preservation.

During the temporary closure, all core services provided by Oliver Cromwell’s House will continue offsite, including the Tourist Information Centre and the popular Gift Shop, which will both relocate to Sessions House, Lynn Road, Ely, which has significant relevance to Ely, with many fascinating stories to tell.

Tours and talks about the building will be available to the community and visitors together with a series of new and exciting tour experiences in partnership with other local heritage sites and cultural organisations. Collectively, these initiatives will allow visitors to continue exploring the rich and diverse history of Ely through guided walks, collaborative events, and experiences throughout the city and surrounding area

The Visit Ely team will continue to offer visitor support, provide local information, and retail experiences from this temporary base.

A Full Day of Reflection and Commemoration

The programme will begin at 10.45am with a ceremonial raising of the VJ Day 80 Flag, followed by a Service at Ely’s War Memorial, where civic dignitaries, veterans, serving members of the Armed Forces, and residents will gather to remember those who served in the Far East campaign. The service will include the laying of wreaths, prayers, and to honour peace restored and lives lost.

At 12.00 noon there will also be a National Silence for 2 minutes.

The city will then come together once again at 6pm at St Mary’s Church, Ely, where the Royal British Legion and St Mary’s Church will be hosting a VJ Day tea party.  Then, at 7pm, St. Mary’s Church will deliver a poignant evening service of remembrance and thanksgiving. The service will include readings, music, and reflections in memory of those who never returned home.

The day will conclude with a Beacon Lighting Ceremony, part of a coordinated national initiative to symbolise the light of peace emerging from the darkness of conflict. Sing! Choirs will be joining the community to provide musical entertainment to mark the occasion.  The beacon will be lit at approximately 7.45pm by command of the Mayor of Ely, accompanied by members of the Royal British Legion and local cadet forces.

The Significance of VJ Day for Ely and Cambridgeshire

While VE Day marked the end of the war in Europe, it was VJ Day that brought global peace after the long and harrowing campaign in the Asia-Pacific region. For the people of Cambridgeshire, and Ely in particular, VJ Day holds special significance. Local men and women served with distinction in the Far East, enduring extreme hardship as prisoners of war or in active combat. Many families across the district still carry the legacy of loved ones who served in Burma, Malaya, and beyond.

Funded by a £250 grant from The Arts Society in London and proceeds from the Society’s November raffle, the project saw members create children’s art bags tailored for three different age groups.

Each handmade bag includes a variety of art supplies and easy-to-follow project ideas to help children stay creative over the summer holidays.

The bags were crafted by Maggie Haverson, Amanda Wesson and Vivien Hussey, with fabric donated by the family of former chairman Wendy Fox. Amanda Wesson and Susan Bluck sourced the materials and designed the activities. Tim Hoof and Janet Jones also contributed to the effort.

It was no wonder St Mary’s Church was packed on Saturday evening as Ely Choral Society and Ely Youth Choir performed their much-anticipated concert Broadway Comes to Ely.

Led by Musical Director Andrew Parnell, the evening was a joyful celebration of iconic songs from musical theatre, beautifully delivered by both choirs and a selection of talented soloists. Accompanists Jeremy Lloyd, Paul Stephenson, and Andrew Parnell himself brought the music to life with energy and elegance.

The programme opened with well-loved numbers from Carousel, including You’ll Never Walk Alone, If I Loved You, June Is Bustin’ Out All Over, A Real Nice Clambake and Blow High, Blow Low. With moving performances and clear diction, these opening songs set the tone for a heartfelt evening.

A touching rendition of Someone to Watch Over Me from Oh Kay followed, stirring the audience with its simplicity and emotion.

The Ely Youth Choir, accompanied by Paul Stephenson, charmed the crowd with lively pieces from Matilda the Musical, Oliver, and A Chorus Line. Their sweet harmonies and confident performances brought fresh energy to the night. They later joined the main choir for highlights from West Side Story and their own standout Mamma Mia medley, finishing with the final number Lullaby of Broadway from 42nd Street.

Solo performances were a real highlight throughout the evening. Megan and Paul Stephenson sang Love Is an Open Door from Frozen with warmth and charm, while Mary Hancock gave a commanding rendition of The Hills Are Alive from The Sound of Music.

Selections from West Side Story, Wicked and Aladdin brought more familiar melodies to the programme, with I Feel Pretty, One Hand One Heart, Maria, and America standing out as audience favourites.

Further solos wowed the crowd, including Amanda Bouskill with her beautifully controlled high-range performance of Is It Really Me? from 110 in the Shade, and the entertaining duet The Book of Mormon by Charles Shneider and Paul Stephenson.

Valerie Housden gave a stunning performance of Bring Him Home from Les Misérables, delivered with sincerity and rich tone. The evening continued with Fixer Upper from Frozen and Send in the Clowns, both warmly received by the audience.

The concert ended on a high with the jazzy Lullaby of Broadway, leaving the audience calling for more.

With stalls spread across both the church and the church hall opposite, the event showcased an impressive variety of handmade and artisan goods. Visitors browsed jewellery, fairy gardens, hand-sewn gifts, decorative wreaths, woodturned items, ceramics, paintings and customised Jellycat bunnies. Church volunteers also sold homemade cakes, adding to the local flavour.

A creative last-minute idea saw organisers selling ice creams from the church porch – a welcome treat that tempted passers-by in the heat and kept spirits high.

There was something for everyone. Children enjoyed craft activities while the Witchford Drum Circle offered a chance for families to get hands-on with rhythm-making in a shady spot outside the church.

A particularly popular stall supported a local hedgehog rescue (formerly Heather’s Hedgehog Hostel), drawing attention from younger visitors eager to learn and contribute.

The raffle and tombola proved just as busy, with generous donations from local businesses, residents and stallholders. Refreshments were available all day, and many guests made the most of the churchyard’s peaceful setting while enjoying a cool-down with their ice cream.

Despite clashing with several other local events, the craft fair raised over £500 to support the church. Organisers are already looking ahead to the next one.

The donation was made as part of the outgoing club president’s chosen charity initiative, following a talk earlier in the year where Baby Bank representatives shared the important work being done locally. The Baby Bank is one of around 200 similar groups across the UK, run entirely without Government funding.

About Ely Baby Bank

Ely Baby Bank offers essential baby items to anyone who needs them — no referral required. The project supports visitors from Ely and beyond, with some travelling from as far as Suffolk and Norwich. Their work has grown significantly, from helping 300 visitors in 2020 to an expected 5,000 in 2024.

A team of 35 active volunteers of all ages help sort donations, creating a welcoming and supportive environment for families. Items available include:

• Baby clothes (up to 18 months)
• Cots, bedding and highchairs
• Toys, books, baby baths
• Limited supplies of buggies, formula milk and nappies

Only high-quality items from smoke-free homes are accepted, and anything unsuitable is recycled to help fund the project.

A Warm Welcome with Coffee and Cake

The Baby Bank is open to browse Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9.30am to 1pm, offering a safe, friendly space with free coffee and cake for visitors. Donations can be dropped off Monday to Saturday, and there’s plenty of parking available.

The team are also fundraising to create a new café space within the Bank to extend their community support even further. Supporters are encouraged to use easyfundraising.org.uk when shopping online, choosing Ely Baby Bank as their nominated cause to help raise funds at no extra cost.

Are you looking for a new way to get outdoors and active or find something you can enjoy together with the family? If the answer is yes, Ely Sailing Club is inviting you, your family and your friends to come and try sailing for FREE on Saturday 3rd May and Friday 9th May 2025.

Whether you’re completely new to the sport or looking to get back on the water, our Open Day is the perfect time to give it a go. Therefore, we are inviting the local community to come down to have a go at sailing with us, see what Ely Sailing Club has to offer and get involved. Who knows, you might just get hooked!

Starting at 1pm, on Saturday 3rd May, you’re warmly invited to tour the lake and sample the delights of sailing by enjoying a FREE taster session out on the water in the capable hands of experienced sailors who will be more than happy to answer any questions that you may have. All buoyancy aids will be provided. A similar session will take place in the evening of Friday 9th May.

As an RYA Training Centre, should you wish to progress your interest, our training team will be on hand to provide information about our RYA approved training courses together with details of membership. You’ll be able to sign up for these courses the week after these events to allow you time to decide if you think that sailing might be for you.

Hot & cold drinks, ice creams and small snacks will be available to purchase from the galley tuck shop at both events.

Sailing at Ely can be as physical or relaxing as you wish to make it, you can sail with others or on your own, do it competitively or potter about and just enjoy the gentle escape of being outside in the fresh air.

FAQs

Do I need to book?

There is no need to book in for these events, please just turn up between 1-4pm on the Saturday and/or 6.30-8pm on Friday.

What do I need to bring?

Yourself! We provide Buoyancy aids which must be worn on or near the water. Please ensure that you wear suitable shoes (closed toe trainers are perfect.) If you wish to purchase from the tuck shop, cash & card are accepted. Also please be mindful of the weather and consider coats, sun cream and hats.

Is there a minimum age?

There is no minimum (or maximum!) age for the Open Events and we encourage families to come try out sailing but those 16 and under will require an adult to attend with them. Sailing trips can only take place if we have a suitable Buoyancy aid meaning that the very littles might not be able to go on the water (although they are welcome to attend). To take a course at Ely Sailing Club, the minimum age is 8 years old.

It is a guardians decision and responsibility as to whether a child participates in a sailing trip at Open Events; if you’re at all unsure, please speak to a volunteer on the day. Those helming the boats also reserve the right to decline to take anyone on a sailing taster if they believe it would be unsafe or inappropriate.

Is there parking?

The club has a small area of grassed parking that those attending the open day are able to use at their own risk. Please park considerately. Bikes can be locked to fencing if two wheels is your preferred form of transport.

Will I get wet?

It’s very unlikely unless it’s raining! Your feet may get damp from splashes in the boat.

A new season of The Library Presents is currently filling Cambridgeshire libraries with music, theatre, dance, and creative workshops this spring – now it’s your opportunity to help shape the future by choosing the performers you want to see in the Autumn 2025 Season!

Between Wednesday 26 March and Friday 2 May, Cambridgeshire residents are invited to take part in The Library Presents choosing process. Their selections will help decide which artists and performances feature in the Autumn lineup of the much-loved arts and entertainment programme. Whether you love live music, laugh-out-loud theatre, mind-blowing magic, dance or theatre, this is your chance to help create the programme and ensure it reflects the interests of our communities.

Since its launch in 2018, The Library Presents has delivered more than 1,000 hours of entertainment, and more than 500 events, offering everything from live music and puppetry to immersive digital arts and hands-on workshops. Thanks to the public’s input, the programme has evolved with each season presenting exciting new artists and events, much to the delight of local audiences who continue to be enthralled with the variety and quality of the performances. One of last season’s attendees commented: “I would expect to travel quite a distance to see these shows – so it’s very much appreciated that they are within easy reach.”

The choosing process coincides with the Spring season of The Library Presents, which began on 21 March and will run to 29 June. More than 50% of tickets had sold before the first performance took place, confirming the continued popularity of this long-running programme.

Thanks to the generous support of Arts Council England, The Library Presents continues to receive significant public funding, enabling the programme to bring high-quality arts experiences to communities across Cambridgeshire. Over a three-year period, £530,000 has been invested to help keep ticket prices affordable and ensure that cost is not a barrier to participation.

Hazel Edwards, South East Area Director, Arts Council England, said: “We were delighted to continue our funding for The Library Presents through our 2023-26 National Portfolio, supporting them to programme a huge variety of creative and cultural events that communities across Cambridgeshire can enjoy. It is hugely powerful to see that local residents have played such an important role in choosing the performers and events that they want to see.”

Making the arts accessible to all is at the heart of The Library Presents. Standard ticket prices are heavily subsidised, with events costing between £2 and £8.50. The programme’s commitment to inclusivity means families, children, and individuals of all ages can experience the magic of live arts. One delighted grandparent shared their experience of taking their grandchild to see Rainbow Butterfly, a vibrant family show combining storytelling, carnival, aerial circus: “The dancers were incredibly talented acrobats, they did a great job of talking to the audience and taking them on a journey. The after-show activities were well chosen and gripped the children.”

The day will commence at 10am and run until 9:30pm with the usual craft and street food market, showcasing local vendors and The festivities will continue with entertainment throughout the day, providing a platform for artists and creatives to share their talents. The event will once again be attended by The Pole Shed who will be demonstrating their skills through out the day.

In a heart-warming first, Ely Pride 2025 will host a wedding ceremony on stage, highlighting the celebration of love and unity within the LGBTQ+ community. This public display of commitment and support emphasizes the event’s mission to promote inclusivity and acceptance for all.

The Combined Authority’s Market Towns Programme is investing back into high streets, community buildings and outside spaces to support a sustainable future for these historic towns.

The latest funding commitments include £927,500 for the Littleport Business and Community Centre, which will create a multi-use facility to support local businesses, remote workers, and community groups.

The centre will serve as a hub for meetings, training sessions, workshops, and events, while also hosting outreach services for healthcare, wellbeing, education, and employment support.

The Combined Authority has worked with Littleport Town Council and East Cambridgeshire District Council on the project, with further funding secured for all of the £2.2 million cost. It is planned to open in October/November 2026.

Littleport Town Council Chairman Clive Webber, said: “This is a significant development for the residents of Littleport. The Council is delighted to have secured this funding to provide a community hub which aims to support local businesses, health services and host further educational providers, creating a centralised space which will enhance local services and resources for the residents of Littleport.

There were 4 categories- Yr 3 girls, yr 3 boys, yr 4 girls and yr 4 girls– and teams of up to 6 from the Isle of Ely Primary School, The Lantern Community Primary School, Little Thetford Church of England Primary School, Millfield Primary School, Robert Arkenstall Primary School and Wilburton Church of England Primary School ran the approximately 1500m course. 

20 Young Leaders from Ely College helped marshal around the course and at the finish line as well as with the recording of the final positions.

In the yr 3 girls race, Millfield were the winners with 2^nd and 3^rd places going to Little Thetford. 

In the yr 3 boys race, Wilburton took 1^st and 2^nd place with 3^rd place going to The Lantern

In the Yr 4 girls race Little Thetford were the winners, Robert Arkenstall 2^nd and The Isle of Ely 3^rd

In the Yr 4 boys race The Isle of Ely took 1^st place, Wilburton 2^nd place and The Isle of Ely 3^rd

The placings of all the children racing were recorded and the highest three placings from each school recorded for each race.  The school with the lowest overall ‘score’ over the 4 races was awarded Yr 3 & 4 Cross Country Team winner.  This year the winner was the Isle of Ely who narrowly beat Wilburton by 4 points.

Caroline Morton of ActivePlay Education said ‘It was a great morning and all the children did really well.  It was fantastic to see so many young people outside, running and enjoying themselves.  I’d also like to say a big thank you to Ben Crosbie and the Young Leaders at Ely College for hosting the event, laying out the course and for all their help on the day.  It meant for a very successful morning.’

 Opening the evening will be Paul McClure, aka The Rutland Troubadour.  Described as “open, honest and warmly melodic” by KLOFmag, he is famed for his dry on-stage wit and powerful songs.  His performances are a delight and guaranteed to get the audience singing.

 Next up will be Eve Selis, a Californian music veteran who has released eleven albums of acclaimed music over a thirty year career.  A regular visitor to the UK, she has attracted rave reviews throughout her life, with her most recent album, 2024’s Dark Sky Blue (“Magnificent” – San Diego Troubadour), winning plaudits across the globe.

 Third to take the stage will be the home-grown Ags Connolly.  He has “the perfect voice for country music” (American Songwriter) as well as the approval of legendary DJ Bob Harris, who says he offers “modern day traditionalism of the very best kind”.  His 2019 album Wrong Again was named UK Country Album of the Year at the 2020 UK Country Music Awards.

 Finishing the evening with a bang will be “the Kings of British Americana“ (Americana UK) Danny And The Champions Of The World.  Danny George Wilson has been making great music for nearly thirty years, with Grand Drive, critical and audience darlings Bennett Wilson Poole and of course the Champions. An “engaging and powerful force” (Blabber and Smoke”), he will be playing songs from his latest album, You Are Not Alone (**** Uncut, **** Mojo) and this performance will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of the festival.

 The four acts will join those already announced, including headliners Oysterband, The Dhol Foundation, Blackbeard’s Tea Party and Sam Kelly and the Lost Boys as well as Maddie Morris, Gaz Brookfield, Sound of the Sirens, Gaelforce, The Magpie Arc and Martin Simpson and many others.

 In addition the festival offers the well-established local music showcase, an “open mic” competition with the chance to play on the main stage,ceilidhs, instrumental and dance workshops, ‘meet and greet’ sessions with some of the festival’s leading artists, jam sessions and children’s entertainment and of course the return of Dog Bingo!  All this takes place on one site at the beautiful Stuntney Estate, just behind Ben’s Yard. Add in an outstanding real ale bar with over 25 real ales and ciders, the return of the enormously popular gin bar and a wide range of mouth-watering food as well as plenty of tempting craft stalls and it’s clear to see why Ely Folk Festival continues to go from strength to strength.

These inaugural awards celebrate individuals and groups committed to sustainability and greener lifestyles across business, agriculture and community initiatives.  Ely City WI has been shortlisted in the Community Champion category for their dedication to sustainability and conservation through various impactful campaigns.

The judges were particularly impressed by Ely City WI’s positive ‘can-do’ attitude and their strong leadership in sustainability.  Their efforts include: 

• litter picking as part of the Great British Spring Clean
• promoting eco-friendly choices such as bringing your own cups to meetings, recycling, item swaps or purchasing second hand clothes/ items, reducing single use plastic
• running a gardening club
• planting of the WI Woods as part of the late Queens green canopy scheme
• encouraging home crafting, including making fidget quilts for care home residents and crocheted decorations for Remembrance Sunday
• raising awareness of climate issues

Every action, no matter how small, makes a difference and contributes to a greener future. It was with this ethos, championed by President Sheila Willson, that made Ely City WI stand out and earn their place in the final.

As an inclusive group of 65 members, Ely City WI truly embodies their motto “We are.  We can.  We do”.  The judges praised them as “steely, focused and dynamic women” who are not only driving change but also inspiring others to take action for a greener, more sustainable future.

The winners of each category will be announced at an awards ceremony on 20^th March 2025. Regardless of the outcome Ely City WI are already winners – true champions within their community, making a lasting impact through their dedication to sustainability and positive action.

Ely Baby Bank was able to celebrate after receiving a cheque for £1,500, which will provide baby formula and food to Ely families in need.

The funding came from Tesco’s Stronger Starts scheme, in partnership with the Groundwork charity, which supports many Ely community projects and good causes, giving away thousands of pounds.

Cilla Palmer, founder at Ely Baby Bank, said: “The demand for formula milk and baby food is rising, and we now support 100 families a week. In just three months, formula requests doubled from 30 to 62 tubs, even with a one-per-month limit.

“Thanks to Tesco’s generous £1,500 donation, we can address this growing need by stocking essential baby food and improving our storage. This support will ease financial pressure on parents, reduce food insecurity, and create a welcoming space for families.”

Ely shoppers can use the Stronger Starts scheme to support local groups by dropping the Tesco community token they receive at checkout into the relevant voting box as they leave the store.

Claire De Silva, Head of Community at Tesco, applauded both organisations essential work for its community. She added: “We’re delighted that we can help Ely Baby Bank to continue its vital service in the Ely community. Stronger Starts invites our customers to use their blue tokens to vote for local schemes they feel will benefit children and young people, and it’s so good to see the impact that the funding makes.”

What is Padel?

Padel is the world’s fastest-growing racket sport—a fun, social mix of tennis and squash played on an enclosed court about a third of the size of a tennis court. It’s easy to learn, highly sociable, and suitable for all ages and abilities.

Currently, there are around 90,000 padel players in the UK, but the LTA expects this to grow to 600,000 by 2026. Despite this rapid growth, the nearest padel courts to Ely are in Cambridge, Bury St Edmunds, or St Ives. EOSA wants to change that and bring padel to Ely.

Why Support EOSA?

EOSA is a not-for-profit, volunteer-led organisation based behind Ely Leisure Village. It provides sports and social facilities for Ely Tigers Rugby Club, Ely City Hockey Club, Ely Tennis Club, and the wider community.

EOSA’s day-to-day running costs are covered by club memberships and facility hire, but extra funding is needed to build the padel courts.

Alongside Crowdfunding, EOSA is applying for grants, with the goal of completing the courts this summer. Once built, the courts will be available through padel membership or pay-to-play options, making them affordable and accessible for everyone.

HISTORY:

For the Millennium Celebrations of 2000, a 10k Multi -Terrain Run was organised and implemented in Sutton.

Named ‘The Sutton Feast Beast’, it established itself in the running calendar with great success. In it’s latter years the 10k was re-named ‘The Tony Robinson Memorial Run’ in memory and tribute to the organiser who passed away.

Alongside this main event was ‘The Sutton Mini Beast’, a 2.5k fun run aimed at non serious runners, children and families.

The last few years we changed things up. We rested our 10k and Fun Run’s but introduced a brand new event for all the family called The Sutton Beast’s Big Colour Blast, which was a morning of colour and mayhem, which is likely to come back in the future.

This year for our 25 year celebration we brought back the iconic 10K plus a new 5k option.

Our key aim has always been and continues to be for this event to be friendly, welcoming, and open to the whole community. Please show your support by entering or coming to support family and friends on the day.

What’s Happening Behind the Scenes?

There’s a lot that goes into reopening a community cinema and we’re covering all the essential steps, including:

Setting up the legal entity and ensuring all paperwork is in place
Managing the budget to keep the cinema running smoothly
Programming screenings so we can bring you the best films
Organising volunteers to keep things running like clockwork
Marketing and outreach to reach as many local cinema-goers as possible
Ensuring all policies are in place, including Safeguarding, First Aid, Health & Safety, Insurances and Contracts
Getting the right equipment and training in place for a professional setup

We’re also taking legal advice to ensure everything is done properly. While this takes time, it’s all part of making sure the cinema is sustainable for the long term.

We don’t have a confirmed reopening date yet, but as soon as we do, we’ll share an update. Rest assured, we’re doing everything we can to bring your local community cinema back to Ely as soon as possible.

The second half started still with Tigers down to 13 as the penalty clock counted down, during this time Tigers added to the scoreboard with McCarthy adding another penalty to lead 20-0, Ely score again, as Mitchell Kennett breaks with the ball breaking out to the wing to find Luke Turner to score, McCarthy adding the conversion, the bonus point try came as Adam Tallack crosses the try line to score, McCarthy was unable to add the conversion as the ball cannons off the right up as the final score finishes 32-0 to Ely, 

The clubs seconds also had a run out on Saturday afternoon as they played March IIs, with the game finishing with a Tigers win as the full time score finishing 48-31, with points coming from Jerome Scott Paul (2), Alfie Allen (2), Jordan Barnes (2) and Harvey Williams all crossing the try line, while Tom Gunbie added 5 conversions and 1 penalty.

This coming Saturday Tigers travel along the A142 for a derby game against 3rd placed Newmarket to round off 2024.

We had a hugely successful Repair Cafe back in January 2024. We fixed a total of 26 items, prevented 69kg of waste and 230kg of CO2 emissions – that’s like growing 4 tree seedlings for 10 years!

Repair Cafes don’t just save money and reduce waste, they also bring people together. Our repairers are keen to share their skills, stop things going to landfill and reduce the impact that buying new stuff has on the environment.

Exciting Progress: Reopening Early in the New Year

We’re delighted to share the next steps in saving the cinema:

• Babylon Arts is transferring management of The Maltings Cinema to the Dawe Charitable Trust (DCT) under the new name Ely Community Cinema.
• The City of Ely Council has agreed to transfer the venue to the DCT.
• With full cooperation from Babylon Arts, we aim to reopen the cinema early in the New Year.

Volunteers: The Heart of Ely Community Cinema

We couldn’t do this without you—our amazing volunteers!  To ensure smooth operations, we’ve organised volunteer teams into five groups:

1. Public Facing
2. Screening Technical
3. Marketing & Ticketing
4. Administration
5. Friends of Cinema

Working with Peter Dawe and Linda Neate, each group will manage day-to-day activities.  We’re setting up Google Accounts for these groups and will get in touch with you soon; if you’ve volunteered but have not heard from us or want to join one of our teams, email lindaneateely@gmail.com.

What’s Next?

We’ve got our heads down right now, getting on with the transfer, but we’re already planning for the future.  Within three months of reopening, we’ll host a public meeting to gather ideas for improving Ely Community Cinema and ensuring its long-term success.

The inaugural Wishing Tree at Greensleeves Care’s The Orchards is an initiative designed to bring a touch of magic to the festive season.

Hanging on its branches are special tags which recognise those people who would appreciate a surprise present this Christmas.

They might be volunteers, community champions, lonely individuals without relatives of their own, or parents who may have been struggling to buy gifts for their children.

Generous donors take away a tag from the tree and come back with a suitable present for the recipient, whether that’s a cosy scarf, a book or a toy.

So far 40 presents have been donated by staff and residents of the not-for-profit home on Forsythia Road, pupils from The Isle of Ely Primary School and other community members.

The gifts will be distributed between now and Christmas and include toys and colouring books, donated to the church’s toy bank for local families in need.

Recipients also include the All in Sound Choir, a group which brings joy and enrichment to the lives of the home’s residents and people in the Ely community living with dementia. The Orchards team presented a scarf to choir leader Kathryn Rowland and biscuits to its volunteer members.

Erin Huggins, who organised the initiative at The Orchards, said: “This is our way of giving back to the amazing community in Ely, which is a lovely place to live and a great location for the home.

“We have a lot of help and support from the people who live here so it’s really lovely to be able to give back to people.

“We aimed to support all ages so some requests were for young children or for the toy bank at the local church. We also included some of our own residents who do not have any family members.

“It’s been brilliant and has gone down so well that we’ll definitely look to do it again next year.”

The Orchards isn’t stopping its community support after the festive season. The home’s winter Warmth of Care campaign will see it open its doors to neighbours with a Big Warm Up day on Saturday January 25.

Erin added: “Winter is an opportunity to spot for growing care needs and explore longer-term solutions. We’re here for families concerned about loved ones this season.

“The Big Warm Up is a free open-day and a chance for visitors to celebrate and experience the joy and humanity that exists in care settings like our home.

As part of the redisplay, over a third of the museum’s gallery was rehung, with fourteen recently acquired acquisitions placed on display for the first time and the number of works by women artists in the gallery also increased by more than a third. 

Amongst the new stained glass exhibits that can now be seen are artworks by Arts and Crafts pioneer Christopher Whall, Scottish modernist Douglas Strachan and leading Irish expressionist Evie Hone, modern post war German craftsmen such as Johannes Schreiter and Joachim Klos, as well as contemporary painter Hughie O’Donoghue RA and glass artist Grace Ayson. Supplementing the new 20th and 21st century displays are some beautiful 17th century domestic and heraldic pieces, enhancing the museum’s chronological permanent gallery which includes examples from the medieval period through to the present day.

The museum closed for a week in November to enable the redisplay, which was generously funded by The Headley Trust. The works were carried out by the museum’s small team of staff with carpentry assistance from local firm Coulsons, and bespoke metal frames provided by Neil Wilton of The Stained Glass Display Company.

Earlier this week The Stained Glass Museum marked this significant milestone in its history with celebration events and were honoured to have in attendance HM Lord-Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire Mrs. Julie Spence OBE CStJ QPM, as well as the Mayor and Mayoress of Ely, alongside many Friends, volunteers and supporters of the museum.  Several artists and conservators who have designed, made or helped conserve works on display in the gallery were also in attendance. The Lord Lieutenant, Mrs. Spence, addressed attendees – and in her speech praised the efforts of the museum’s team and highlighted the museum’s importance and significance as a cultural asset.

The event also marked the official launch of an exciting new Collections Fund – and the ambition to reach £500,000 in gifts and pledges by 2029 to help care for and further develop these unique collections and ensure they are available for future generations.

The Stained Glass Museum’s collection has grown significantly in the last forty years since the museum first opened to the public. Since 2000 the collection has evolved to include many beautiful examples from a variety of secular and sacred buildings from across the United Kingdom, Europe and beyond. Many of these acquisitions were made possible with the support of the Art Fund, the V&A Purchase Fund, and many generous individual donations.

After the game Club Chairman, Andy Gunbie issued the following statement “As Chairman, one of my roles is to travel to away matches and support the first team, Today was no exception, we travelled to Ipswich Rugby Club, by now, you will have seen the result. We had a tough day at the office, with 31 players unavailable, Des could have taken the easy option and called the game, but not wanting to give away 10 points, a team was pulled together, and the match went ahead. 3 coaches and the youth chairman pulled their boots on to avoid just giving the match away. I am immensely proud of those who played today, as they showed the true spirit of rugby and demonstrated the pride in the badge we wear.”

Time slots to book the field are available 7 days a week with bookings now open from 28th September onwards. Pre-booking is essential and a quick and easy online booking system is in place allowing customers to pick a time to suit them. 

Opening day proceeds on the 28th September are being donated to Block Fen Animal Centre – RSPCA. Ely Dog Field is also going to provide some free sessions to the centre over the year to help support them in the amazing rehoming work they do.

Ely Dog Field owner Becky said “As a dog lover myself, it has been a long-term dream of mine to share this amazing space with the local community and to see their dogs enjoy the benefits of a safe space to exercise and have fun. I also wanted to make it a place where dog owners feel relaxed and families and friends can meet and exercise their dogs together, whilst enjoying the wonderful views.”

During the recent preview weekend, a group of lucky dog owners brought their dogs along to try out the facilities. Jay Chapman from Chatteris and his puppy Rocky were among the first to visit. Jay said “Rocky has had a brilliant time at the field today. He’s a young puppy and we are still training him to be off lead in public so this is the perfect opportunity for him to run free, safely and away from any other dogs. The children have also really enjoyed encouraging him to try out the equipment, so everyone has had plenty of fresh air and exercise!”

Something like a toaster, kettle, lamp, bag, toy, jewellery, pair of jeans or computer? Bring it along to the Repair Cafe being held on Saturday 26th October from 11.00am – 2.00pm in Ely Library and get it seen to by an experienced volunteer repairer for free.

They will pinpoint the problem and try to fix it there and then for you, or let you know what spare parts to get for when you come back next time.

We had a hugely successful Repair Cafe back in January this year. We fixed a total of 26 items, prevented 69kg of waste and 230kg of CO2 emissions – that’s like growing 4 tree seedlings for 10 years!

Repair Cafes don’t just save money and reduce waste, they also bring people together. Our repairers are keen to share their skills, stop things going to landfill and reduce the impact that buying new stuff has on the environment.

In addition to their monthly meetings, the warm and sunny weather has seen a variety of activities and meet ups for members.  In addition to the small group events such as diners club, coffee catch ups, book club, craft group and lunch club; some members tried their hand at golf at the Driving Range.

With a number of other projects and initiatives in the pipeline there is certainly a lot for Ely City WI to get involved with and make a difference.  Once again, members have made fidget quilts and twiddle muffs for local care homes and their residents who have dementia and these will be delivered over the coming weeks. 

Ely City WI continue to collect donations for Ely City Foodbank on a regular basis and are currently preparing for their November Remembrance Craft Bomb around the town.

A spokesperson said “we have had a wonderful summer, and it has been great to meet up through our sub-groups to keep connected and to learn new hobbies or continue with existing interests.  Having recently moved to new premises we are a full and busy group.  If anyone is thinking of joining us, we would encourage you to get in touch and add your name to the waiting list”.

ECWI have a full and varied programme and is open to women over the age of 18 from all walks of life.  As a member you will have access to 11 main meetings a year, all of the sub-groups, our private social media groups and 8 copies of the WI magazine ‘WI Life’ per year.

Ann Biggs says of her inspiration taken from Welney: “Living as near to the Welney reserve as l do, it has always been my ‘go to place’ to watch and draw, recording the scenery and wildlife which in turn inspires the work that you will see in this exhibition.” 

“I love the seasons particularly winter where water battles with the land and provides an endless source of material for my work. Watching a trio of hunting peregrine on an icy, wind-swept morning is one of my most treasured memories. I hope visitors enjoy looking at my work and I look forward to meeting people at my ‘meet the artist’ sessions.”

Amy Wormald is an award-winning artist based in Ely. Drawing inspiration from the world around her home, her work captures the essence of wildflowers and flora in vibrant, colourful paintings. With a distinct painting style, she uses a combination of spray paint and acrylic to evoke a feeling of joy in these exuberant forms.

In her third solo exhibition at Babylon Gallery, Amy offers moments of joy and connection, using nature’s power to inspire, uplift and connect us to the world around us. The title, ‘WILD’, refers to both the unrestrained aspects of nature, and the freedom and spontaneity of the artist’s creative process.

“This exhibition is perfect for anyone wanting to feel uplifted by colour and inspired by the
energy in nature,” says Amy Wormald.

For World Sight Day on Thursday 10th October, 10:30am – 4pm, Amy will be in the gallery to talk about the exhibition, describing her paintings for those with visual impairments, and giving an insight into her creative process. Alongside this, visitors will be invited to make their own clay ornaments inspired by plants and flowers. While the day is planned for visitors with visual impairments, all are welcome to come along.

The inaugural Autumn Tennis Harvest event, held this September, was a fantastic success, bringing families together to enjoy tennis-themed games and activities in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. With games like Pumpkin Smash and the Corn Maze Rally, participants of all ages had the chance to play, compete, and most importantly, have fun.

A Day of Family Fun and Friendly Competition

The Autumn Tennis Harvest event was designed to create a welcoming environment where families could play together, regardless of skill level. The emphasis was on fun rather than competition, allowing everyone—from seasoned players to first-timers—to join in. The day’s highlight was undoubtedly the Pumpkin Smash, where players tested their serving accuracy by aiming for pumpkin-shaped targets, as well as the creative Corn Maze Rally, which added a unique twist to traditional rallying.

Building Stronger Bonds Through Tennis

One of the core goals of the event was to foster family connections through shared activities. “We wanted to create an event where families could step onto the court together, without any pressure, and simply enjoy the game,” said Sebastien, Director of 10is Academy. “Seeing kids rallying with their parents and siblings, all while having a great time, was exactly what we hoped for.”

Looking Ahead: The Next Family Event

With the success of the Autumn Tennis Harvest, 10is Academy is already preparing for next month’s event. The October family event will bring a Halloween twist with the Tennis Trick or Treat session. Families will be invited to wear costumes, participate in light-hearted matches with fun rules, and enjoy spooky tennis drills like the Ghost Rally and Witch’s Hat Target Practice.

The Autumn Tennis Harvest set a high bar for future family events, and 10is Academy is excited to continue providing opportunities for families to enjoy the sport together in creative and engaging ways.

Tigers were forced to change their starting XV due to injuries, after a bright start for Ely it was the visitors that opened the scoring with an early try the conversion couldn’t be added  as they took a 5 point lead, a tap and go penalty under the posts saw Tigers open their scoring as Mitch Kennett  bundled the ball over to score, Alsop add the conversion as Tigers took a 2 point lead.

Mistake at a line out allowed Newmarket to score again, in the same spot as previous try, this time the conversion was added, from here it was the visitors that controlled the game, as they  break free once more from a line out deep in their own half, with Tigers unable to make the tackles count as they allowed Newmarket free to score under the posts, conversion added, missing tackles and moving the ball quickly saw another try for Newmarket, with the conversion added, with the aid of the upright as there score board read 26-7, from a line out, Ely won the ball as Jordan Barnes took the ball over for a try, a penalty to Newmarket in front of the posts saw them opt for the points, with three points being added to the score board with the successful kick, as half time approached Newmarket score again, as Ely fail again to hold on to the player as the visitors break again down the wing, cutting in to score under the posts, with the conversion added they lead at the break 36-14.

Second half started with neither side able to get a hold of the game, and it was the hosts that put the first points on the board, and came from an error from the visitors, the error put Ely deep into the Newmarket half, the ball finally being taken across the try line by Jim Storey, Alsop was able to add the conversion, but it was missed tackles, highlighted by head coach, Des Lloyd, after the game, that came back to trouble Ely again as Newmarket crossed the try line once more, again with the conversion added the visitors lead 43-21,  

Ely finished the game with 14 men as Matt McCarthy was shown a yellow card for a high tackle, the final whistle blew soon after as the points headed back along the A142 to Newmarket.

Students from Ely Community College are creating a large mural in the underpass leading to the leisure and entertainment location, as a way of creating a positive image of young people and developing their skills in street art.

The collaborative project has involved key partners City of Ely Council, Ely Community College, East Cambridgeshire District Council and Cambridgeshire County Council.

Kilo, lead artist at Splash & Dash Creations Ltd, facilitated a series of after school workshops with the students, aimed at teaching the skills required to be able to paint a group mural, and working on basic spray paint techniques including filling in, fading colours together, working with complex shapes and outlining. 

Students, from Year 8 to Year 10, were tasked with developing their own original ideas, combining the best elements into a finished design and completing the collaborative painting. One student commented that they:“First started Graffiti club because I had just been to Birmingham where there were loads of cool graffiti murals and I thought it would be really cool to help make something like that in Ely.” 

Youth councillor at City of Ely Council, Will Novick, added: “It’s wonderful to see the college and local councils working together to create opportunities for young people to influence the city we live, work, and study in. This project will turn an unattractive underpass into a community project which will show the best of Ely.”

It is hoped the creation of the mural will instil enthusiasm and joy with all those who use the popular gateway underpass and inspire other young people to take part in supported projects.

Lizzi Houghton of Communities Service, Cambridgeshire County Council said: “This partnership project with young people in the driving seat has been made possible with the great support of all the organisations involved and will be an amazing showcase of young peoples imagination, creation and design for everyone to enjoy.”

The installation is taking place over the weekend of 21st and 22nd September, starting late morning and continuing into the afternoon each day. Everyone is welcome to call by and watch the installation taking place. Some areas of the underpass may be sectioned off whilst the work is taking place but it will remain accessible during the weekend.

Lis Every, Chair of the Community Safety Partnership added: “This excellent project was initiated by our local young people who wanted to ensure the underpass was a pleasant environment for the community using it.  The students from Ely College, with local partners and professional street artists will really transform this area.   

“The CSP were really pleased to support this which is funded by the City of Ely Council and community infrastructure levy committee as sub-group of City of Ely Council. We are grateful to all those involved – it is a real partnership approach. 

“We would like to hear of more ideas from young people and where possible work together to make them happen.”

It was the Tigers that got the first points on the scoreboard after a spell of pressure, finally moving the ball from left to right finding Adam Tallack who found a gap in the corner to tab the ball down, with Jake Alsop able to add the conversion points, a penalty awarded soon after saw Alsop add a further three points to the scoreboard as the Tigers led 10-0.

The home side started to get a foot in the game as they picked up a loose kick and attack, with the ball out to wings, finding the gaps to score their first try, with the conversion added Tigers leaded narrowed, a penalty for Bury saw them opt for the three points to level the scoreboard,

Half time approach with the award of a penalty, Alsop opting to kick for the points, but the chance was missed as the scores reminded level, it was the home side that took the lead on the stroke of half time, with a quickly taken penalty resulting in a try, with the conversion added as the home side took the lead for the first time, from the restart Ely were awarded a penalty, for the same point as the one moments earlier, this time Alsop made no mistake, and with the help of the upright the ball dropped the right side as the half ended with Bury leading 17-13

The restart of the second half saw a turning point of the half, as Bury went down to 14, following a high tackle, with the extra man Ely made it count, with Mitch Kennett going over, and with Alsop adding  the extra points, Ely lead once more, but that lead didn’t last long, as back came the home side with a penalty, and once again the score board were level at 20-20.

Ely broke through again, with Rhys Williams Goldman, scoring his first try since joining the club in the Summer, with Alsop adding the extra points to open a seven point lead,  but Tigers were unable to build on the lead as once again to level the score up, as they break free from tackles to find a gaps to cross the try line , with the conversion added, with the help of the post as once again the scoreboard was level, back came Ely as the broke deep from their own half for a powerful run from Matt McCarthy, the ball finding Paul Dewey whose las gasp pass found Williams Goldman who touched down for the try, Alsop was unable to add the extra points, as the game reached the end, Bury pulled level once more, as they scored a try in corner, as Ely missed tackles once more, the conversion was missed and it looked like the game was going to finish in tie, but from the restart there was still time for a final twist, Ely restarted and kicked the ball into the middle of the part towards the Bury backline, but as the ball came down the defender dropped the ball and knocked on, for the official to award a penalty, Alsop opted to kick, the ball sailed over the posts as the official blew for the final time as Ely ran out 35-32 winners.

Speaking after the final whistle Head Coach, Des Lloyd said the following  “very tough game, and we got through it, however, we still have lots to work on, and that’s what we’ll be doing over the next week during training, we missed some tackles today and that’s just one area we’ll be working on as a group”

For over 30 years, Ely Cathedral has hosted a special service dedicated to animals and was one of the first Cathedral’s to do so. This very special event is dedicated to celebrating animal life particularly the joy and pleasure we experience from our own pets in addition to the vital work of animals in service such as Guide Dogs, Therapy Dogs and Medical Detection Dogs, as well as those animals specifically trained to work with the military or the police force. 

As in previous years the Cathedral team are looking forward to welcoming numerous pets including dogs, cats, guinea pigs, rabbits, ferrets, tortoises, and alpacas to name just a few. This informal family service  also recognises the work of all the animal charities and proceeds from the event will benefit many local, and some national, charities, many of whom will be represented.  As in previous years, the Cathedral ask people not to bring any pet or animal that could become overanxious in such a busy environment. 

A spokesperson for Ely Cathedral said, “This is one of the highlights of the year for many of us at Ely Cathedral.  We are a very dog friendly Cathedral and already welcome dogs into the building for visits and some services, however it is very different to experience so many people coming together with lots of different kinds of pets for this service. We are always especially happy to have Marley the donkey attend – He usually leads the procession of animals and charity workers as the make their way up the Cathedral nave which it such heart-warming sight”. 

This very special service, which has been featured on BBC’s Songs of Praise, takes place at Ely Cathedral next Sunday, 22 September at 2.00pm. The music for the service will be performed by the Ely Imps, Ely Cathedral’s voluntary children’s choir. Everyone, plus their furry or not so furry, friends and family members are welcome!

The Kite Trust, based on Market Street, supports LGBTQ+ young people across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.

Their LGBTQ+ trained youth workers offer tailored support to anyone reporting hate crimes and incidents.  They can also receive anonymous reports and help people understand what the follow up investigation process looks like.

A hate crime is any criminal offence which is perceived by the victim, or any other person, to be motivated by hostility or prejudice based on a personal characteristic, specifically actual or perceived race, religion/faith, sexual orientation, disability and transgender identity.

Pip Gardner, chief executive of The Kite Trust, explained: “It is widely accepted that hate crimes are under reported, especially among members of the LGBT+ community.

“Not all victims of hate crime are comfortable with reporting their experiences directly to the police, for fear of being outed in terms of their sexuality or disability, or because they find visiting police stations intimidating or daunting.

“Third party reporting centres overcome these barriers by providing an alternative way to report a hate crime. They give confidential advice, help a person report it, and support the person along the way. The person can remain anonymous if they wish, and they don’t need to have contact with the police if they don’t want to.

“By offering our services as a Third Party Hate Crime reporting centre, we hope more people will feel comfortable in seeking help so we can stamp out this cruel behaviour which destroys so many people’s lives.”

Tiff Lane, Action Against Hate co-ordinator, Cambridgeshire constabulary explains: “People don’t tend to report these kinds of crimes for many reasons. Our hope is that victims of hate can have their voices heard and hate crimes are reported, so that we can properly understand, investigate and manage the issues our communities face.

“Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Hate Reporting Centres are places where the staff understand what hate crimes are, how they hurt and why, and how people can report, so staff will feel equipped to share this knowledge with victims.”

The Kite Trust received training via the East Cambridgeshire Community Safety Partnership (CSP) which brings together representatives from the police, Federation of Small Businesses and East Cambridgeshire District Council, as well as other organisations working together to protect the local community from crime and help people feel safe.

Lis Every, chair of the CSP, said: “We are delighted to have been able to offer the awareness training needed to help local organisations become Third Party Hate Crime Reporting Centres. Hate crimes often start off small and escalate to cause irreparable damage to individuals and in some cases whole communities.

“The combined support of the CSP and local organisations such as The Kite Trust puts us in a much stronger position to stamp this out and I would encourage anyone who is experiencing a hate crime to report it as soon as possible.”

The Kite Trust is the fifth organisation in East Cambridgeshire to become a Third Party Hate Crime Reporting Centre and hosted the launch of the new countywide Hate Crime Awareness material.

People can also seek help for hate crimes from trained advisors at Littleport Town Council, Sutton Parish Council, Fordham Parish Council and The Lighthouse in Ely.

Darryl Preston, Police and Crime Commissioner for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough funded the Hate Crime Awareness material through the Safer Communities fund, added: “I am pleased to see East Cambs Community Safety Partnership providing support to the Kite Trust so that victims of hate crime have the confidence to come forward and seek support at the earliest stage. 

“While there is no place for hate crime in our county, having appropriate support is vital to stamping out this awful crime.”

Hate crimes can also be reported to Stop Hate, True Vision or Cambridgeshire Police.

The aim is to provide the best possible service to residents whilst also increasing the district’s recycling rate.

The plans drawn up by East Cambridgeshire District Council are designed to have multiple benefits for residents and the environment at the same time.

Currently over 70 per cent of local authorities charge to collect garden waste. If approved, it will mean East Cambs residents continue to benefit from a free fortnightly collection service. In addition, the charges for additional bins are being removed from spring 2026 to coincide with the launch of the new proposed services. Residents instead will be able to put in a request to the council for a green and blue bin free of charge if one is not enough.

Replacing a black sack collection with a wheeled bin and introducing weekly food waste collections will also reduce the amount of rubbish going to landfill and prevent litter escaping.

Residents will also be able to easily recycle soft plastics such as cling film, carrier bags, trays and tubs. This will further reduce the amount of waste going into black bins and will mean less waste going to landfill.

If approved, the council is aiming to bring in all the changes from spring 2026 to coincide with government plans to introduce a weekly collection of food waste nationally. Funding is being made available by the government to support this.

Residents who receive a standard household collection will be provided with:

• Food waste: A free 5 litre kitchen caddy and a 23 litre kerbside caddy which will be collected weekly. An initial year’s supply of caddy liners will be provided.
• Dry recycling: This will continue to be collected in a blue lidded 240 litre wheeled bin every two weeks. Residents will be able to add in soft plastics such as tubs, plastic bags and cling film. For households that regularly fill their blue bin, residents can put in a request to the council for a second bin free of charge.
• Green recycling: Garden waste will continue to be collected for free in a green lidded 240 litre wheeled bin every two weeks. If required, residents can put in a request to the council for a second bin free of charge.
• Rubbish: A free 180 litre black wheeled bin will be provided for any waste that can’t be recycled and collected every two weeks.

Alternative services and assisted collections will continue to be provided for residents who cannot accommodate wheeled bins or have additional needs, such as those with larger families.

The proposals will go before the council’s Operational Services committee on 23 September.

If approved, they are expected to save the equivalent carbon produced by travelling 3 million miles in a petrol car each year, helping the council meet its core environmental objective of creating a cleaner, greener East Cambridgeshire.

Cllr Anna Bailey, leader of East Cambridgeshire District Council, said: “We are really excited to be announcing these proposed changes to be brought in in 2026 which I know will have multiple benefits for all residents – and the environment too.

“For residents, it means they continue to receive a free garden waste collection – something only a handful of councils continue to provide. They will also get free extra blue and green bins on request, will have their food waste collected weekly, and be able to easily recycle all of those tricky plastic trays and bags that many people just end up putting in the rubbish.

“In turn, this will help reduce the amount of non-recyclable rubbish and food waste going into landfill. Last year we recycled 58% of waste putting us in the top 20 local authorities in the country when it comes to recycling. This included a staggering 7000 tonnes of dry recyclables and 11,000 tonnes of green waste.

“I know our residents recognise the importance of recycling and with their help I know we can improve our excellent recycling rate even further helping us all create a cleaner, greener East Cambridgeshire.”

The council will also be running engagement campaigns to help people realise the importance of using less and recycling more alongside the introduction of the new bin service.

The Better leisure centres, run by GLL, a charitable social enterprise, have joined forces with Sporting Memories to bring these new sessions to local men and women who are sport fans in Cambridge and Ely.  They offer an opportunity to meet and make new friends while bonding over sporting memories and shared experiences.

Louis Green, Community Sport Manager, at GLL, said: “It’s an ideal activity for those in their fifties and beyond and we’re delighted to bringing these sessions to the area.  It will be a welcoming, inclusive space and we particularly invite those living alone, locals who have dementia and other long-term conditions, to come along.

“I’m sure there will be some fascinating stories about sport and local history shared and our aim is to make the sessions thought-provoking and stimulating. The first part of the Club session will be talking about sport and people’s memories of playing or watching sport with hot drinks for all, followed by a game of Boccia and light exercise.  Our aim is to make each session fun and exciting with quizzes, spot the ball and other interactive activities.”

Completely free to join, the individual Clubs will have two-hour weekly sessions.  The Sporting Memories Club held at Abbey Leisure Centre starts on September 10th and will have sessions every Tuesday from 12 – 2 pm.  While the club at Hive Leisure Centre in Ely begins on September 11th with sessions running every Wednesday, from 10 am 12 pm.

Locals in Cambridge and Ely are invited to bring along photographs and memorabilia from their sporting heydays to reminisce with other like-minded people and replay their beloved memories while making new memories at the clubs

The game started well for the visitors as they went into a 7th minute lead, with a converted try, Tigers were soon level as Matt McCarthy crossed the try line, with Jake Alsop adding the conversion, but back came the visitors as Tigers were unable to get a foot in the door, as they raced into a 21 – 7 lead, as half time approached Tigers added to the score board, as Jim Storey powered over the try line, Alsop was unable to add the conversion as Tigers headed to the break 21-12 behind.

The second half started very much like the first, a scrappy game, and like the first half it was Diss that added to the score board first with the award of a penalty, which Diss added to increase their lead, Diss went town to 14 as the referee awarded a penalty which Alsop opted to kick, but he pulled his kick wide of the posts.

Soon after Ely had their first try of the half on the board as they moved the from right to left to unable McCarthy added his second try of the afternoon, with Alsop adding the conversion to close the gap, moments later Tigers were level, as Grant Storey being stopped meters from the try lines, but managed to keep the ball live, probing left to right, finally finding the gaps they needed, as McCarhy’s cross field kick was caught by Declan Wolverson who in turn was able to free Paul Dewey, who finally feed Jim Storey who crossed the line to score his second try of the afternoon, with the conversion missed the score was level at 24-24, from the restart Diss had the chance to score with a penalty, the ball fell short, with time running short the game was heading for a draw, but there was still a chance for Ely , from a scrum on the right in the Diss half, Tigers moved the ball sideways once more looking for the gaps, which they found for McCarthy to score his third try of the afternoon, with Alsop adding the conversion as the final score finished with a 31-24 score.

Coach, Des Lloyd, spoke after the game to say, “we’ve done really well, getting that first win, however lots to work on over the next week, from half time we had to make some changes, and that got us to where we needed to be, so we look forward to a week of training and the trip next Saturday to Bury 2s”

Beyond the barriers: Freedom of religion is a right, but access to church is not always easy for adults with additional needs. Firstly, many people are dependent on others to bring them to church. Secondly, church services may create barriers to understanding and to feeling a sense of belonging – such as complex and figurative language, very few visuals to help with processing information, and sensory extremes from silence to loud music… All of these factors can be difficult for a person with additional needs.

Friendship, faith and fun for all: Rich Tea Community (RTC) was founded to overcome these barriers and to create accessible church in Ely. RTC gathers once a month on a Sunday, 3.30–5pm, at Countess Free Church for friendship, faith and fun for adults with additional needs – plus volunteers, family, friends and carers. There is often an engaging short talk including sensory objects and visual aids. People can sit and watch or take part in the activities. Sessions include:

social time, conversation, refreshments, craft, games, drama, music

sharing Bible passages; prayer and reflection; and (4 times a year) a simple communion meal.

The award was presented at RTC alongside parachute games, table tennis, craft and music. Margaret Human, co-founder of the community, gave the certificate to Cate Allen and flowers were presented by Sarah Best, an RTC member from Kings Lynn who discovered RTC through nominating her own church for a Luke 5 Award (see Sarah’s story here).

“I feel part of the church and like I really belong”: Margaret, who is from Ely and has additional needs herself, made the award nomination because she really enjoys RTC. She said:

“At Rich Tea, I lead prayers and do readings. I feel part of the church and like I really belong and am valued. We started the group to share about Jesus with people with learning disabilities and let them know God loves them and church is a welcoming place for them.”

Cate Allen, a newly qualified Baptist Minister and Roofbreaker church disability champion, said:
“The need is huge, for reaching people who are often left out of church and society, yet have amazing gifts to offer. I believe a church without disabled people is an incomplete church. We have been running Rich Tea sessions for people in local care homes, as well as providing small-group faith-building sessions for current RTC members.”

How your community can get involved: Janet Eardley, Programme Manager at Through the Roof said: “Our Luke 5 Award celebrates the difference made when barriers are broken down and disabled people are welcomed and fully included in Christian life. It is named after the account in Luke’s Gospel about the four men who brought their paralysed friend to Jesus by lowering him through the roof. This passage gives our charity its name, and also our ‘Roofbreaker Project’.”

Almost half of King’s Ely’s GCSE results this year are grades 9-7 (the old A*-A), and more than three quarters of results are grades 9-5 (the old A*-B). The overall pass rate is 95%, with virtually all students achieving a pass or better in Maths and English Language.

These fantastic results not only reflect our pupils’ hard work and determination, but also their teachers’ and mentors’ expertise and commitment for them to succeed. They also come just a week after our Year 13 cohort once again secured places at their first-choice universities and institutions, not just in the UK, but across the globe. This year, a fifth of A-Level results achieved at King’s Ely Sixth Form were the top A* grade, almost half of grades were A*-A, and three-quarters of results were grade A*-B. The overall pass rate was 100%.

Mr Jonathan Shaw, Head of King’s Ely Senior, said: “We are delighted that the hard work of so many of our pupils has been recognised with some excellent GCSE grades this summer. Many have exceeded expectations, and we are very proud of our Year 11 pupils for their diligence and enthusiasm, both inside and outside the classroom. For many, these results have been achieved alongside a commitment to many aspects of school life, be it music, drama, or sport. I would also like to thank the teachers and other staff who have supported our pupils both academically and pastorally throughout their time at King’s. Success such as this is always the culmination of a superb team effort.”

More than a quarter of this year’s GCSE cohort achieved grades 9-7 in at least eight of their subjects, including one student who secured grade 9s in nine of their subjects, and one student who achieved seven grade 9s.

As is reflective of an all-round, enriched education, King’s Ely pupils have studied and achieved in a wide variety of GCSE subjects. Almost half of all grades in the following subjects were at least a grade 8 – Biology, Chemistry, Drama, History, Latin, Music, Physics, Religious Studies, and Textiles.

James Barber, who joined King’s Ely Senior in Year 9 from St Faith’s School in Cambridge, achieved all grades 9-7. He will be studying A-Levels in Physics, Chemistry, Maths, and Further Maths here at King’s Ely Sixth Form. James said: “I am very happy with my results. I revised lots and it all feels worth it now. I am looking forward to studying subjects that I really enjoy at A-Level. Career wise, I hope to go into engineering, maybe aerospace engineering.”

Sienna Burley achieved grades 9-8 in eight of her GCSE subjects. Sienna, who joined King’s Ely Prep in Year 8, is studying Biology, Chemistry, and Maths for her A-Levels, and she aspires to study medicine at university. Sienna, who started volunteering at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge this summer through the Young Persons Programme, said: “I am staying at King’s Ely for Sixth Form, and I am excited to study subjects that I love. I worked hard for my GCSEs, but I would have never got such good grades without the amazing support of my teachers. I am also looking forward to the Sixth Form socials!”

William Kirkup, who has been at King’s Ely since joining our Nursery in 2011, achieved all grades 9-7 in his subjects. He will be studying A-Levels in Classical Civilisation, Fine Art, and Film Studies here. William said: “I am considering a career in theatre set design, although that is not set in stone. I really enjoy my music and the music department here at King’s is exceptional, which is one of the reasons I am staying on for Sixth Form. I also love the fact that all our teachers know us as individuals, which means the support is strong.”

Twenty-five pupils from all corners of the globe also received their results today having studied the one-year IGCSE programme at King’s Ely. The two-term intensive course sees young people studying in their non-native speaking language, and the average number of subjects taken is six. King’s Ely is delighted to report another excellent set of IGCSE grades, with an overall pass rate of 94%. More than two thirds of IGCSE results were grades 9-6. Two students achieved grade 9s in all their subjects.

Mr Matthew Norbury, Director for International Students at King’s Ely, said: “Our IGCSE students arrive in England for the first time ever in September, and just seven months later they are successfully sitting their IGCSEs in an education system they have never experienced before. Every year I remain humbled by their achievements.”

Ely Photographic Club began 50 years ago, in 1974. They are a friendly local club with
almost 50 members, all of whom have a passion for photography and varying levels of
experience.

The group have held several exhibitions of their prints over the years, including one at Babylon Gallery in 2022. Now they are returning to this riverside venue for the group’s anniversary.

The exhibition will feature work from several members of the group, spanning a range of
genres including abstract, architecture, landscapes, portraits and wildlife. These
photographic prints will be available to purchase, either framed or just mounted. In support of the exhibition, Ely Photographic Club have received sponsorship from Muse Fine ArtPrinting.

“We are delighted to be able to put on this exhibition to give members the chance to
showcase their work, and I hope that people will take the opportunity to visit us there to
help us celebrate the club’s 50th anniversary,” said Phil Lenney, Secretary of Ely

Suffolk County Council and East Cambridgeshire District Council remained committed to seeing through the legal challenge but were left in an impossible position to continue.

With West Suffolk Council and Cambridgeshire County Council abandoning the process, the cost of legal fees for the two remaining councils versus the likely financial return in a successful outcome was no longer a justifiable use of public funds.

Although both councils still had the desire to take things forward, the loss of two councils in the group action is damaging to the process as a whole.

Councillor Richard Rout, Suffolk County Council’s Deputy Cabinet Member for Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects, said:

“We are deeply disappointed by West Suffolk Council and Cambridgeshire County Council choosing not to challenge the outrageous decision by the government to approve the Sunnica solar farm that spans our two counties.

“The Sunnica solar farm was approved by the new government against the recommendation of the independent Planning Inspectorate, who said it should be thrown out. In pulling out of this challenge, the two councils have demonstrated they are intent on serving the interests of the government over the interests of local communities and taxpayers.

“Those councils may suggest now going cap in hand to the developer but that has little chance of success. We must not forget that this is the worst scheme we have ever dealt with and the developer has, to date, shown no interest in properly meeting our costs or properly engaging with local communities.”

Councillor Anna Bailey, Leader of East Cambridgeshire District Council, said:

“I am unbelievably disappointed with the decisions of Cambridgeshire County Council and West Suffolk Council to pull out of the Group action. They have expended public funds, the legal position has not changed, and yet they are now refusing to finish what we started. What a waste and what a let-down for local residents.

“Now local taxpayers are going to have to foot the bill for the costs to the councils of this unwanted, appalling development; Cambridgeshire County Council and West Suffolk Council have seriously let the side down by allowing that to stand without challenge. 

“There is still a long way to go with this application and the developer still has a huge mountain to climb before they send in the diggers to the food production fields of rural East Cambridgeshire and Suffolk. East Cambridgeshire District Council will work to do all it can to mitigate the impact of this development, secure local benefits and to stand by its residents.” 

All four councils had earlier received a response from the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, the Rt Hon. Ed Miliband MP, to their pre-action protocol letter in a bid to secure appropriate funding.

That reply outlined the government’s position to defend their decision to grant permission for the Sunnica project. The councils maintain their position that the Secretary of State made a legal error, but cannot now test the case in court.

The vast majority of our 95-strong Year 13 cohort have once again secured places at their first-choice universities and institutions, not just in the UK, but across the globe.

This year, a fifth of A-Level results achieved at King’s Ely Sixth Form are the top A* grade, almost half of grades are A*-A, and three-quarters of results are grade A*-B. The overall pass rate is 100%. 

These fantastic results not only reflect our students’ hard work and determination, but also their teachers’ and mentors’ expertise and commitment for them to succeed. As a marker of their all-round, enriched education, King’s Ely pupils are going on to study subjects as diverse as Medicine to Music, and Film Production to Finance.

Mr Jonathan Shaw, Head of King’s Ely Senior, said: “We are absolutely delighted with the A-Level results of our Year 13 pupils; they should feel extremely proud of their outstanding grades. Many individuals have exceeded their own expectations and will be particularly pleased with their results. However, as well as achieving some fabulous grades, they leave King’s Ely as extremely well-rounded individuals with the character and confidence to make a difference in whatever path they choose. I would like to offer my congratulations to both our Year 13 pupils for their hard work and determination, as well as our teachers for their teaching and guidance. All four King’s Ely students holding Oxbridge offers achieved the top grades to take up their places this year – Lily McCallum to study Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge; Kit Attwater to study Music at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge; Samuel Trueman to study Music at Queens’ College, Cambridge; and Elliot Dickson to study History at St Hugh’s College, Oxford. 

This year, twenty-four students achieved all A*-A grades, and forty-eight pupils earned all A*-B grades. Popular university destinations include Bath, Durham, Edinburgh, Exeter, London, York, and Newcastle. Our Year 13 leavers are studying a fascinating and vast array of degrees and courses – as ever, subjects in STEM, Humanities, Languages, and the Arts are strong. Four pupils are going on to study Medicine this year.

One of our budding Medics is Sydney Smith, who secured her first-choice place at Cardiff University. Sydney has been at King’s Ely since joining Nursery in 2008! She said: “I have wanted to study Medicine for several years now, and it was a huge relief this morning to see that I had achieved the grades I needed. I have been at King’s my entire life, so it feels surreal and sad to be leaving. It is an amazing school. Everyone is so supportive of each other, and I have been able to do so much alongside my studies, such as Sport, Music, Ely Scheme, and lots of different trips.”

Samuel Trueman achieved the grades he needed to be Organ Scholar at Queens’ College, Cambridge. Samuel joined King’s Ely Senior in Year 9 from King’s College School, Cambridge. He said: “I am so pleased with my results, and very relieved. I feel like all the hard work has paid off! The teaching at King’s really is fantastic. The class sizes are small, and everyone is known as an individual, which I feel makes the school community at King’s unique. The Music and Drama Departments are also exceptional.”

Sophie Haydn-Slater is heading to her first choice too – Oxford Brookes University to study International Hospitality and Hotel Management. Sophie, who joined King’s Ely Prep in Year 7, said: “The dream career for me is event management for a large hotel chain overseas or on a super yacht – basically a career that will allow me to travel. I have loved my time at King’s. It is an incredible place to be, and you must make the most of every opportunity here. I feel that I have done exactly that, from football to drama productions, I am leaving on such a high.”

Thomas Kirkpatrick will be studying Horology (the art of making clocks and watches) at Birmingham City University after achieving the grades he needed. Thomas, who joined King’s Ely Prep in Year 5, said: “When my grandfather passed away, he left me his Rolex watch. I was fascinated by how it worked, and this is what sparked my interest in horology. It is a very niche degree, but all my teachers have been so supportive, encouraging me to pursue what really interests me.”

As well as offering almost thirty different A-Level courses, King’s Ely also enables pupils to study vocational Level 3 Diploma qualifications in Business Studies, and Food and Nutrition. This year, 86% of students achieved at least a Distinction, a third of which were a Starred Distinction. From September 2024, King’s Ely will also be offering the Extended Certificate in Sport. These qualifications are equivalent to one A-Level, and they are taken alongside A-Levels.

This year, twenty-seven students also completed Extended Project Qualifications (EPQs) in addition to their A-Level subjects, which are equivalent to 50% of an A-Level. More than 70% of students achieved an A*-A grade.

Mr John Attwater, Principal of King’s Ely, said: “Our students’ achievements today underline the great value of learning in a community where everyone is known well, their talents are valued, and each other’s success is paramount. This year group and their teachers have exemplified that spirit and thoroughly deserve their celebrations today. This year, A-Levels have been marked strictly to pre-COVID standards with no quarter given for any effects of the pandemic lockdowns on children’s educational journey. I am especially pleased that our results continue to climb even by this measure and are well above where they were in 2019, the benchmark; this demonstrates King’s Ely’s continuing presence as a first-rate academic Sixth Form alongside our well-known strengths in the arts and co-curriculum.”

The first ball was served at 5am and after 165 games the final rally was played out with Becky Lemkow, and counted down by jubilant members and supporters.  

More than 30 members and guests – including Jack’s Mum – took part in the event, either partnering with Jack or pairing up as opponents, and many more popped down to offer their support, sweets, coffee and cake!

After the event, Jack said “I want to thank everyone for their support and donations. It means so much to see so many members come together and get behind this event. What an amazing club! Five years ago, I lost my stepdad to cancer and Macmillan were incredible. They helped so much and gave us the opportunity to spend his final days with us at home.”

This is event is part of a very busy summer for ETC. The Diversity and Inclusion Team hosted a popular stall at Ely Pride, ahead of the Diversity Open Day taking place at the Hive on Sunday 11th August.

And, in a triple whammy, the Men’s 1st, 2nd and 3rd teams all achieved promotions in the Cambridgeshire Dunlop LTA Summer Leagues.

The district council has worked closely with Suffolk County and West Suffolk councils, both of which also took their own independent legal advice; all three legal opinions are in accordance with each other.  The advice received by all three councils is that there is an opportunity for the councils to challenge the funding mechanism required to undertake the final stages of work. Therefore, the four affected councils, including Cambridgeshire County Council, have now written to the Secretary of State advising him of our challenge.

Cllr Anna Bailey said: “We are shocked that the Secretary of State has given the go ahead for this massive development on food production land in rural East Cambridgeshire and the council is now facing huge increased cost in dealing with this matter, which hasn’t been taken into account in the decision.

“There is currently no direct benefit to our communities from this site. It is deemed to have a significant impact on our communities, and there are also biodiversity concerns. Added to this, unlike other solar farms, residents will not benefit from cheaper energy, nor will the council receive any potential business rates income from the facility.

“This council is completely supportive of renewable energy. This has been demonstrated by our approval of renewable energy schemes on land outside of Burwell and Soham over the past few years.

“But it’s imperative such schemes are in the right place and are right for the communities in which they are located.”

Ely is only the third Cathedral in the UK to achieve this outstanding achievement which was given by the Christian conservation charity A Rocha UK and reflects the Cathedral’s commitment to place creation care at the heart of everything they do.

This stunning and much admired, Romanesque and medieval Cathedral is not only prominent in the local community, but also globally recognised as a spectacular venue and visitor attraction. The Cathedral’s recent Annual Report illustrates 2023 as the lowest year so far in carbon emissions, being a reduction of 42% from the peak in 2019. They have achievements across all areas of the Eco Church survey that would be expected from a gold awarded church, but they also have many initiatives that demonstrate their creativity and forward thinking approach, including: cutting paper use by adopting downloadable service sheets, regular litter picks, an innovative approach to food waste and engagement with Fareshare (https://fareshare.org.uk/) – a national charity that turns food surplus into meals. The stunning land and gardens around the Cathedral are being managed for nature and include recently planted hedgerows, being a release site for rescued hedgehogs and plans to plant an orchard.

Helen Stephens, Church Relations Manager, explained “Our huge congratulations to Ely Cathedral on their well-deserved gold Eco Church award. Everything about their approach sets them out as an exemplar of what it means to be a gold awarded church, and their strong engagement in local networks provides opportunities to share their learning and experience as well as explain what drives their care for the environment”.

The Cathedral has demonstrated a love and respect for God’s created world through prominent talks and events as well as behind the scenes action. Ely Cathedral’s community environment group, RENEW, was formed in 2019 and joined forces with the Cathedral Chapter’s Environment Working Group in 2021 to use the Eco Church framework to strategically and methodically progress their net zero targets and environmental action.

Chair of Environment Working Group Alison Binstead said “We are all absolutely delighted to gain the recognition of Gold A Rocha Eco Church Award. It really has been a huge team effort across every area of Cathedral life and has brough with it so many positive changes. As a heritage building, we are fully aware of the challenges ahead and remain committed to both the financial & resource investment required to improve our carbon footprint moving forward. The support we have received from Eco Church right through bronze, silver and gold has been excellent and we look forward to continuing our environmental improvement journey with the exceptional team of people we have here at Ely”.

The Very Revd Mark Bonney, The Dean of Ely summed it up in saying, “it is enormously gratifying that our care for God’s creation has been recognised in this way. To date the council is the only district, county or unitary authority still in operation in the country not to have increased Council Tax for the past 11 years.

Its innovative approach to financing, supported by its two trading companies, East Cambs Street Scene and East Cambs Trading Company, also means it is one of just a handful of local authority organisations in the UK with no debt.

Over the next 12 months the council has also pledged to deliver a new housing and homeless strategy to provide safe, affordable and high-quality housing for residents.

It follows the council’s release last month of 4 £100K affordable homes at the new Eden Square development for eligible residents who live or have strong connections with the Ely area.

Following government announcements earlier this year, the council will also be further developing its waste strategy. This will include plans to consider improvements to street cleansing and incorporate a weekly food waste collection and black wheeled bins for residents.

Other commitments include:

• Delivering its annual top 20 environmental commitments. These include a ‘hedges for hedgehogs’ campaign to support the increase in native hedgerows and extension to the Pride of Place grant scheme. To date this has awarded more than £60,000 towards 18 community nature projects, delivering new ponds, tree planting, hedgerow planting, bird and bat box installations, churchyard restoration, wildflower sowing and much more
• Continuing to engage with Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority (CPCA) on its Bus Reform and Network Review
• Working with CPCA and partners to deliver improvements to the BP roundabout between Witchford and Ely, the A10 towards Ely and the A14 and Phase 2 of Soham Railway Station
• Progressing work to deliver a new ecologically friendly bereavement centre near Mepal

There will be crack downs on environmental crime, such as fly-tipping and littering, and further development of the council’s Love Your Street campaign to improve the look and feel of local communities.

Councillor Anna Bailey, leader of East Cambridgeshire District Council, said: “Our mission is quite simple: we want to deliver for the people of East Cambridgeshire. Over the next 12 months we are packing a lot in to help us meet our three key priorities of sound financial management, creating a cleaner, greener East Cambridgeshire and delivering sustainable communities.

The Malcolm Whales Foundation has held their Sponsored Walk every year since 2009 raising over £600,000 for cancer related causes.

This was the charity’s 16th annual walk and its biggest ever, with 400 participants taking to the path. The charity was created in memory of Malcolm Whales, Damien’s dad who sadly died from Bowel Cancer in 2008.

The walk this year was supported by six secondary schools: Ken Stimpson Academy, Ely College, Prince William School, Hampton Gardens, Arthur Mellows Village College and Swavesey Village College – there were also several students attending from Ramsey Abbey and Hinchingbrooke School. In addition to the secondary students the event also includes families, friends and multiple ex-students who have previously attended the walk. 

The money raised will go to support lots of different causes. The largest this year is the Foundation’s Lakeside Retreat (TMWF’s Lakeside Retreat), which is being built on the bank of one of the fishing lakes at Rookery Waters in Pidley. This retreat will provide free respite breaks for any families that have been affected by cancer. With the sponsorship and money still coming in it looks set to be a record breaking figure with a strong chance that the walk alone will have raised an unbelievable £100,000. 

The Walk begins each year on the promenade at Weymouth, passes Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door before finishing on the beach at Studland. The 40 miles is spread out across three days with base camp located just outside Corfe Castle. The age of participants range from Damien’s youngest son aged 6 to adults in their 60s. This year Edward Whales Damien’s middle son) who turned 8 on the walk completed the entire walk for the first time (the youngest ever to complete it). 

The event builds such power from the sense of achievement felt by every single participant as they complete the sprint finish together on Sunday afternoon. They know what they have achieved as they can feel an overwhelming sense of pride for what they have accomplished. The photos and celebrations turn quickly to I can’t wait until next year.

Babylon ARTS Summer Open is an annual celebration of work created by artists from both the local area, and further afield. Following an open call for artworks, a selection panel anonymously selects works to create a balanced and varied exhibition.

This years selection panel included Jay Morally (Jay the Creator), an artist, writer and poet from South London; Madhu Manipatruni, a visual artist based in Peterborough, currently in residence at PARCA (Peterborough Asylum and Refugee Community Association); and local artist Stuart Green, who is also Babylon’s own exhibition installer and trustee.

With almost 300 artworks submitted for consideration, the panel had a difficult task. The final selection consists of 115 pieces from 83 artists, featuring both two and three dimensional works. These include portraits, florals, landscapes, abstracts, geometric patterns, wildlife and seascapes, in a wide range of styles and mediums, in an exhibition that promises to offer something for everyone!

Babylon ARTS Summer Open Exhibition 2024 is on from Friday 2nd August at Babylon Gallery until Sunday 1st September 2024.

This is put together each year by a keen group of volunteers who have grown from a group of friends, who give up their free time to stage the event. With an emphasis on music we all know and love, CRF24 showcases the music of Rod Stewart, The Blues Brothers, Pink Floyd, Creedence Clearwater, Cream, Yes,  ZZ Top, AC/DC, Joe Satriani, Rory Gallagher, all performed by dedicated individual tribute bands and in some cases with original band members. There will also be quite a few original artists on stage during the four day event, so there will be plenty of new music for you to discover as well.

Many top notch beers, wines and farmhouse ciders complete the offer from behind the bar.

We came away with 2 National Age Group qualifiers, 3 Regional medals and 5 County medals. There was a family feel to it too with the Schultz father and son duo and the Pillow sisters all competing. 

Alex Pashley and Jacob Schultz both qualified for the National Championships in the 2km race for their age group, with Alex winning the County silver medal and Jacob winning County bronze. Barry Schultz and Amy Sole both winning Regional gold and County gold in their age groups for the 2km race. Bella Pillow won a Regional bronze medal and County gold medal in her age group for the 2km race. William Clarke also competed in the 2km race, finishing 11th. 

Phil Trelford won County gold for his age group in the 3km and Annabelle Smith competed in her first ever open water event, finishing 10th in the 3km race. 

Maddie Pillow competed in her first open water event, overcoming some fears and finishing 8th in the 1km race. 

Superb swims all round and we wish Alex and Jacob all the best as they go forward to the National Championships on 27th July at Rother Valley.

Examples of projects that will be considered include minor structural or aesthetic repairs to frontages, new or improved signage (not illuminated), street furniture, glazing, painting, planting, improved awnings and improved access into and out of premises. 

Interested organisations have between now and Friday 30 August 2024 to submit bids between £500 and £20,000. 

Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority (CPCA) ring-fenced £1 million of funding for each of its market towns to deliver interventions identified in their Masterplan documents, which are designed to increase economic growth.

Members of East Cambridgeshire District Council allocated £75,000 for Ely to its Market Towns Programme Fund at its Finance and Assets Committee Meeting on 27 June to support small improvement projects. 

Councillor Anna Bailey, leader of East Cambridgeshire District Council, said: “Carrying out small improvements such as fixing broken signs, planting up shop fronts or replacing street furniture make a huge difference in enhancing our market towns and this will encourage residents, shoppers and visitors to spend more time here, which in turn will benefit the local economy. 

“We realise with the cost of living crisis many businesses and organisations do not have the extra funds to carry out improvement works. 

“This grant is designed to help anyone who has responsibility for buildings in Ely. 

“It really is a case of small changes being able to make a big difference.” 

Grant funding under this scheme will cover the cost of improvements (capital expenditure) and is not intended for work such as surveys, advice or other costs that might be considered non-capital expenditure. 

All applications will be assessed following the closing date and funds will be allocated to those which most closely match the funding criteria.

The drop-in events, which last year attracted hundreds of young people, are returning to the district due to popular demand.

They provide a unique opportunity for anyone under the age of 18 to try their hand at sporting events and clubs operating locally and find out more about organisations offering support and advice.

There will be opportunities to scramble up a climbing wall, meet the fire service, try your hand at judo (Burwell only) or korfball (Haddenham only) or have a work out at a mobile gym.

Plus, you can find out more what you can do to help reduce waste and increase recycling in East Cambs.

A bike mechanic will be available to offer advice on bike maintenance and carry out basic repairs on the day free of charge, and the police will be offering bike security marking. 

There will also be opportunities to meet support organisations and ask questions about topics you may want to know more about, such as mental health advice, careers opportunities, how to maintain a healthy weight, and drugs and knife crime.

Stephanie Jones, Communities and Partnerships officer at East Cambridgeshire District Council, said: “Whether you want to just have an enjoyable free day out with friends, or find out more about the support and services that are available – or both, it’s guaranteed there will be something for everyone on the day.”

Last year Youth Fusion events took place in Soham, Littleport and Bottisham.

Nina, aged 12, said: “I thought it was really good, I loved the climbing wall, and I won a smart watch from the sports people in the bean bag relay.”

Logan, aged 9, added: “I really enjoyed the day, especially the climbing wall.  Really hope I can go again this year.”

The Youth Fusion days will be held between 11am and 3pm at:  

• Burwell Recreation Ground on Thursday 8 August 2024 
• Haddenham Recreation Ground on Thursday 28 August 2024

Both sites are fully accessible, and attendees are advised to take their own water bottles for refills on the day. Limited parking is available.

The events are being supported by a diverse range of organisations including East Cambridgeshire District Council, Cambridgeshire Constabulary, East Cambridgeshire Community Safety Partnership, Living Sport and EMC bicycle repairs.

The council, along with hundreds of local residents, has long been a vociferous objector to the plans for the massive solar farm which will span well over 900 football pitches.

It believes the site will have a significant negative impact on people living in the East Cambridgeshire villages of Isleham, Chippenham, Kennett and Snailwell, as well as Freckenham and Worlington in Suffolk, as well as the natural and historic environment of the local area.

Together with Cambridgeshire County Council, Suffolk County Council and West Suffolk Council it is also concerned about the site’s impact on biodiversity and local economy.

It was because of its sheer size that the planning application had to be decided by the Secretary of State in the first place.

The Council will be reviewing this decision carefully in the next few days to see how the decision was made. In addition, the Council will need to see what requirements will now become our legal responsibility to discharge on behalf of the Secretary of State once a developer comes forward seeking to build this energy farm.

Cllr Anna Bailey, Leader of East Cambridgeshire District Council, said: “We are heartbroken and extremely disappointed the new Secretary of State has seen fit to sideswipe the views of four councils and hundreds of local residents and businesses to agree to these proposals.

“This council is completely supportive of renewable energy. This has been demonstrated by our approval of renewable energy schemes on land outside of Burwell and Soham over the past few years.

“But it’s imperative such schemes are in the right place and are right for the communities in which they are located.

“This massive development will span over 900 football pitches and have a significant negative impact on people living in Isleham, Chippenham, Kennett and Snailwell.  There are no benefits whatsoever for local people arising from this development.

“As a consequence, this council unanimously agreed not to the support the development during a special hearing of the planning committee on 3 November 2022.”

Alex Hodson, aged 5,  from Sutton has had a love for bin lorries, recycling and the environment since he was just two-years-old.

During this time he has changed his family’s habits for the better, and made his school friends and Scout group much more aware of their eco footprint.

Mum, Georgia, said: “He often picks up litter he sees, and places it in the appropriate bin, and encourages his classmates to do the same.

“He has also inspired some of his Scout group to join him on litter picks in Sutton.

“During Mental Health Awareness week, the children were asked to bring something into school that made them proud. Alex took a photo album which we made for him this Christmas, covering all the eco-friendly activities, and research we have done together. This includes visits to Witchford recycling centre, the Thalia Waste Management centre at Waterbeach, and photos of him playing with his impressive collections of toy bin lorries and mini bins.

“When we told him about the competition, he said the name he would choose for the bin lorry is ‘Loveheart – Because I love bin lorries and recycling so much.’ It would be a dream come true for him to see this become a reality, as parents we are so incredibly proud of his unique interest, and to see the impact he is having on others, and their recycling habits at such a young age.”

Councillors at East Cambridgeshire District Council were so won over by Alex’s commitment to waste and recycling they immediately agreed to name one of the lorries Loveheart. And as an extra special treat took Loveheart to meet Alex.

The Name a Bin Lorry competition attracted hundreds of entries from across East Cambridgeshire and has been featured on Radio Cambridgeshire and BBC Sounds. Residents were asked to send in their preferred names for the council’s new fleet of bin lorries.

“But when we heard about Alex’s love of bin lorries and his suggestion of the name Loveheart we knew he had to be the overall winner.

“I am so pleased Alex got to see Loveheart the lorry and meet the crew.”

The new fleet purchased by East Cambridgeshire District Council, includes new in-cab technology designed to deliver a more efficient and cost-effective waste collection service. They are also able to run on Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) as well as diesel, which is more beneficial for the environment.

Highlights included the festival family fun day (despite the weather) which featured musical performances on the bandstand, circus skills, dance and art – all for free in Jubilee gardens. There were workshops to get involved in including Linocut, ceramics and samba drumming. Free lunchtime concerts at the Sessions House welcomed star performers from the Royal College of Music, King’s Ely and Royal Academy of Music, professional theatre in the Bishops Garden, a large scale community concert and a festival finale celebrating a number of local groups in St Mary’s Church. Many local artists and musicians were featured including Laura Pearson-Clark who painted live in response to Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, Cliff Ward with an atmospheric gig in the Crypt at Julia’s Tea Room and workshops led by ceramic artist, Louise Beale and linocut with Lizzie Ault (Tales of the Fen) 

Chris Parsons, Artistic Director of the festival says ‘It has been a brilliant festival and as a festival team, we are delighted with the interest and engagement in all the events. It shows how important the arts can be and we’re really excited about our plans moving forward. We are keen to reach the whole community and 40% of the events this year were free to attend. There was something for everyone with high quality classical music at the Sessions House, Ely’s hidden gem of a venue, comedy at the Maltings, workshops and lots more. We’re always keen to hear from individuals with new ideas! Huge thanks must go to the brilliant festival committee and all the wonderful local sponsors, without whom the festival would not be possible’

Organisers Friends of the Lantern School (FOTLS) had been on standby in case forecasts of stormy weather proved to be true – but a warm, dry day meant the sponsored assault course could take place.

The Lantern Ninja Dash had been rained off twice – in March and in May – but the challenge, a highlight for many of the 450 or so students at the school and Goslings Preschool, had been worth the wait, organiser Sinead Hurley said.

She added: “After a few false starts, it was great that the ‘Around the World’ Ninja Dash could finally go ahead. The kids really enjoyed the event, saying they couldn’t wait to see what next year’s theme would be. This made it all worthwhile.”

The sponsored race has so far raised £2856. Adding Gift Aid takes the total to about £3486, which will be spent on outdoor shelters for the school.

Budding ninjas aged between three and 11 got to put their speed and agility to the test, with a series of obstacles to conquer around the school’s back field.

Children were challenged to crawl under an “eel hive from Ely”, balance along the “Great Wall of China”, dodge bears and alligators in America, crocodiles in Africa, weave through the Amazon rainforest and hop across Antarctica, while avoiding “deadly snakes and spiders” in Australia! 

Straw bales allowed kids to scale the peaks of the Himalayas – but they had to watch out for the Yeti!

The celebrations continued into the evening, with the day branded as “Festive Friday – the Remix”, referring to the fact that the initial event had been postponed. Students enjoyed a non-uniform day in exchange for a donation to Ely Foodbank. 

As well as the Ninja Dash taking place throughout the day, FOTLS put on after school entertainment, including inflatables and refreshments.

FOTLS chair Meredith Hux Atkins said: “We are so grateful to our small but mighty team of volunteers, who stayed behind late on Thursday to set up, and were at school all day on Friday. There is so much that happens behind the scenes to ensure events like this are a success. We would also like to thank the school for their incredible support.”

Voice 21 works with more than 1000 schools nationally, and Ely College was one of only 24 to have their oracy achievements recognised in the most recent round of applications.

The Voice 21 Oracy Centre of Excellence award certifies and celebrates schools that are changing the way they educate by supporting students to find their voice – and as a result, are transforming their learning and life chances. To secure its recognition, Ely College had to demonstrate the quality of oracy education being provided across five areas of school life: their school’s vision, culture, curriculum, learning and impact on students.

A Voice 21 report, shared with the College, states “there is a strong vision for oracy which is held by the whole school community.” This ensures “students have a range of opportunities to develop their voices both inside and outside the classroom and are being supported to enhance their conversational skills with adults.” 

Samantha Rasmussen, Oracy Lead and Vice Principal of Ely College said: “Oracy is a vital skill, particularly in our post-pandemic world, and we have seen the incredible difference it can make to the learning and confidence of students at all ages and abilities in our school. Voters will need to show photo ID at polling stations before they can receive their ballot paper. Without it, potential voters risk not having their say in the general election. 

Accepted forms of ID include a UK, European Economic Area (EEA) or Commonwealth passport; a UK or EEA drivers’ licence; some concessionary travel passes, such as an older person’s bus pass or an Oyster 60+ card; and the free Voter Authority Certificate. Voters will be able to use expired ID if they are still recognisable from the photo.

The post Remember Voter ID is needed for the general election appeared first on Spotted in Ely.

Focusing on a metaphorical ‘cabinet’, it will explore the transformation of seemingly mundane materials into new forms whether in paint, found objects or mixed media pieces.

Helen uses mostly natural and organic materials, including old artworks, torn paper, metal dregs, twists of plant fibre, slate, shells, small animal bones, dried gorse, clay and tiny pebbles. They are collected by the artist who describes them as treasures that can be found everywhere.

During the process of reworking these materials possible new identities emerge, with each artwork becoming a miniature theatre in which characters and narratives can be interpreted by the viewer. The work is intended to be a playful signpost in which numerous stories can be found. The artworks themselves are often created in a grid format.

Helen works byapplying layers of materials over individually painted squares using tweezers. She aims to evoke a mood or atmosphere in the objects, to create an intuitive understanding for the viewer.

Referencing the words of Miro, “It is signs that have no exact meaning that provoke a
magic sense”.

“This exhibition is dedicated to my mum with huge love and gratitude,” says Helen Murray,

“She was a very wise and playful woman, as well as being a wickedly funny mimic, and full of love […] I have treasured memories of our time together and I hope very much she would have enjoyed this show.”

Helen is a self taught artist, and lives near the Suffolk coastline, which she finds a source of inspiration in her work. She has worked previously as an illustrator and in 2009 set up Artbox (now Artboxarts CIC) which offers art sessions for adults with special needs.

Ely Museum have been working on their latest exhibition, Back to Nature ready for the summer. With input from the Ely Nature Friendly Farmers and conservation organisations such as the RSPB and the National Trust at Wicken Fen, the exhibition champions the environmental initiatives that are taking place across our fenland landscape.

The Fens are truly unique and support an incredible range of wildlife including specialist species that are found nowhere else in the UK. A landscape that has changed dramatically from wetlands to a drained fenland creating farms to provide food for us. As technologies changed and farms have become increasingly reliant on chemical inputs on large scales, biodiversity has continued to decline. But here in a pocket of the Fens are the Nature
Friendly Farmers of Ely, using innovative techniques to support traditional values in going back to nature.

The Ely Nature-Friendly Farming Zone was started in the winter of 2017/2018 to show how modern farming and wildlife can work side by side. By joining together, the group of farmers represent an area covering over eight-thousand hectares, in Ely and the surrounding villages.

“As a group, the Ely Nature Friendly Farming Zone are committed to creating a profitable, sustainable farming landscape.

Supporting increasing levels of fenland biodiversity, we want to inspire others by sharing best practice in nature-friendly farming locally and nationally.”

The exhibition includes several activities for children and family visitors including a roleplay vegetable patch and a craft table to make your own butterfly to add to the museum display. A new Back to Nature trail around the museum will also be available, so start the Summer Holidays with some family friendly fun!

From signing the Armed Forces Covenant back in 2021, the teams involved have meticulously planned and produced a fantastic day and are very proud that Ely is now part of the national celebrations.

There will be over 30 traders, many military vehicles, a short parade to include collective standards.  We welcome the Mayor of Ely, Cllr Chris Phillips to open the day. The Blue Skies Band are coming to Ely and start playing from 10.30 am and the City of Ely Military Band will continue from the afternoon before the closing ceremony which will be 2.30 pm

We are hoping the community will join us to celebrate the day, browse the stalls, chat to the military vehicle owners, enjoy refreshments and more!

The National Lottery Heritage Fund. This event showcased the creative work completed by the students and artists involved, while also offering further creative activities and reflection
on the project.

In 2023 Babylon Arts was fortunate to secure funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund for an 18-month project entitled ‘Inspired by Nature’, working with partners at The National Trust’s Wicken Fen site and Ely Museum. The aim was to develop creative approaches that enabled connection and engagement for people with low vision, young people and the wider public, thereby improving access to arts and heritage for more people. And we were also delighted to be able to involve Highfield Littleport Academy in a later hands-on, creative phase which culminated on Thursday 6th June.
All children at the school benefited from practical workshops in February and March 2024 with three professional artists, Lead Artist, Kaitlin Ferguson and Assistant Artists, Amy Wormald and Lyn Pryor, experimenting with a variety of printmaking techniques using natural inks from blueberries, beetroot and bark and taking into consideration nature, whilst
referencing fossils and those we may leave behind!

A significant and magnificent truly co-created artwork, ‘Deep Time – Imagining Ely’s Prehistoric Landscape and Ocean’ comprising of 4 printed wall hangings on muslin that incorporate imagery provided by the artists and the children has been installed at an impressive height in the school hall to serve as a legacy and a reminder of the fruitful and creative interactions that took place in the school during the residency by the artists.

On Thursday 6th June a Celebration Event brought together all the young participants, several parents and carers, teachers and the artists to enjoy the fruits of their labours and to engage in some further creative activity and evaluation.

The main highlight was that the children saw the finished artwork, ‘Deep Time’ for the first time and were very excited to
see some of their own drawings incorporated and all the pupils credited on the wooden plaque alongside! Other highlights of the project adorn the walls of the school where you can see framed prints made by the children and fired handmade clay fossils are on display in
the hall. During the event, children were given access to a Sensory Room where they enjoyed Kaitlin Ferguson’s film about Wicken Fen, accompanied by scented oils to stimulate their senses, a fossil digging station where they played amateur archaeologists, unearthing some 3D printed wooden fossils and a printmaking table where they produced a largescale
communal print by using fossil stamps that they had made themselves during the project.

“The finished artwork is fantastic, it depicts the students sensory and learning experiences perfectly,” said Yvonne Skillern, the Headteacher of Highfields Littleport Academy,

“It is great that every student from the most sensory learner to some of our artists of the future have been included in the project. It has been of huge benefit to our learners and we would love to repeat this sort of project again. A huge thank you to Babylon Arts for making
this possible”

The children and parents even provided creative feedback on their experience of the project on sugar paper leaves with which they could adorn a tree or via dinosaur footprints that could be placed on a pathway through nature, printed using real leaves and plants! Some of their comments included: “I want to be an artist”, “It made me feel proud of myself” and “This was the best day ever”.

The exhibition is a first for DEMAT and part of a programme of events designed to celebrate the diverse talents of their pupils.

Showing over 200 pieces of art, the successful artists, aged 5-11 years old, have been invited for a Private Viewing with their parents on 7th June.

The Art Exhibition will also be open to the public on Saturday 8th June from 9.30-12.00pm

Giant postcards, designed by children’s illustrator Ella Beech, share personal messages from nine animals who live in wetland habitats around the world.  Dotted across 1.4km of trail exploring part of our 1,300 acre wetland centre, those on the adventure trail at WWT Welney use a trail map to find the postcards and discover new wetlands and the animals that thrive within them. 

Created to offer an unforgettable experience, the postcard trail will encompass all corners and habitats of the WWT centre, so not only will explorers read what’s happening in wetlands across the globe, but see, up close and personal, the interesting species enjoying the summer months at WWT Welney. 

This includes close up views of our high flying summer visitors like swallows and house martins nesting and caring for chicks at our main hide. Watching mute and whooper swan families with their ‘ugly ducklings’ on the pools and waterways viewed from our hides and trails. Making contact with otherworldly creatures at our moth mornings (Tuesdays each week), spotting day flying moths and colourful butterflies whilst bug hunting throughout our wetlands. Getting eye to eye with dragonflies and damselflies, some of them daintily flying over the grasses and wildflowers, whilst others find a sunny spot to perch and await a mate.  The wealth of insect life is a vital part of the wetland ecosystem, both above the water’s surface and below. 

Families completing the trail will have a WWT Welney postcard, so they may share their amazing experience and what they’ve learnt about wildlife and nature with a loved one.

The postcard trail offers a real opportunity for them to explore nature and learn more about wildlife, both here and around the world.  It’s a completely unique experience families simply won’t find anywhere else.” 

The postcard trail is part of an on-going programme of summer 2024 activities at WWT Welney that includes pond dipping, exploring nature with play, getting up close to insects whilst bug hunting, meeting otherworldly creatures at moth mornings and other activities. Families who want to get involved just need to pick up a trail map at the visitor centre.  More information about this activity and all the exciting and educational things to do at WWT Welney can be found at www.wwt.org.uk/welney

EAST was formed in 1995 when founder member, Carol Dixon, created a group for textile artists in East Anglia who wanted to develop their creative skills and build an awareness of the beauty and power of textile art amongst a wider audience.

The group has since exhibited across England in galleries and museums. EAST exhibitions usually have an enigmatic title, with members carrying out in-depth research and preparation into their artwork.

Over the previous year, members of the group have pondered the role of women both past and present. Each of them has undertaken research across a diverse range of topics, focusing on either an individual story, or on societal trends that reflect how women’s lives have changed.

The resulting work is inspired by women who, despite their circumstances and the challenges imposed on them due to their gender, have forged a path and a way forward for themselves for others to embrace. “When viewing this exciting new exhibition, one may surmise that EAST has become the bridge – the link between our ‘women of inspiration’ and the wider audience that views the final work” says a member of EAST.

Bridging the Gap is on from Tuesday 4th June at Babylon Gallery until Sunday 30th June.

The post East Anglian Stitch Textiles present an exhibition that celebrates“women of inspiration” appeared first on Spotted in Ely.

In addition to hearing about the climate friendly retrofit of Gardiner Hall and the blossoming Repair Café movement, there was also opportunities to learn about Community Energy plans and digital mapping technology which can empower local councils.

Over 50 individuals from voluntary groups, parish councils and the wider community came along to the Greener Together event at Gardiner Hall in Burwell on 15th May.  It was co-hosted by Cambridgeshire County Council, Burwell Parish Council, East Cambridgeshire District Council, East Cambs Climate Action Network and Cambridge Carbon Footprint.  It was a lively afternoon with stalls, presentations, discussions and tours of Gardiner Memorial Hall.

The aim of the event was to connect people who care about the environment and our changing climate and for them to inspire and encourage each other to grow action together.  The feedback was incredibly positive, with people saying they felt much better equipped to set up their own green initiatives after the event.

If you missed the event but are keen to get involved, there are further opportunities to do so.

The first East Cambs Imaginarium will be taking place at Burwell Carnival on 29th June, with artist and founder Hilary Cox Condron. Everyone is invited to join in and unleash their creativity at this pop up space where we imagine our homes, streets and towns with gentler, thriving, connected communities and more space for nature.  You can see an example of the Imaginarium here.

In addition, community leaders will be able to borrow the Imaginarium kit free-of-charge from Cambridge Carbon Footprint and Hilary will be running a free online training session on 12th June for those who want to learn how to facilitate sessions themselves.  If you are interested please register using this link.  Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

Friends of the Lantern School (FOTLS) is hoping its Lantern Summer Fair on June 15th is even more popular than last year’s event, which attracted over 1000 people and raised over £4000.

But keeping entry free, with affordable activities for the whole community to enjoy, was as important as raising funds, FOTLS chair Meredith Hux Atkins said.

Meredith added: “We know times are tough for many people – so we really want this to be something that everyone can afford. Most of our stalls will set you back just 50p to £1, our refreshments are mostly being done cheaply in-house and you can enjoy some activities without spending a penny. Of course we want to raise as much as possible for our amazing school! But we need to balance that with being inclusive and catering for all budgets.”

The fair will boast inflatables, face painting, traditional stalls and games like Hook a Duck, performances by The Lane Academy and Ely Dojo, arts and crafts, a raffle and tombola and even a chance to soak headteacher Anthony Aguda while he stands in the stocks!

Also planned are visits by a fire engine and G’s tractor as well as Stormtroopers from the UK Garrison 501st Legion (Vader’s Fist).

FOTLS have also planned to support local business, Ely’s City Cycle Centre, for its main raffle prize – a £300 voucher to be spent on anything within the store.

Meredith said: “Whether you’ve got your eye on a huge Lego set, fancy a splurge in the craft department or even want to buy a bike, some lucky person is going to win this incredible voucher!”

She added: “It was really important to the committee that we shopped local for our main prize – this way we are giving three times – to the prize winner, to the school and also to a local business that does so much for the local community. We are also very grateful for all the fabulous prizes that Ely’s generous local businesses have contributed.”

Seventy-five per cent of proceeds from this year’s fair will go towards providing Cost of Living Grants to classrooms at the school.

For the second year running, FOTLS have issued £100 Cost of Living Grants to each class at the Lantern this year – something they hope to expand on in future.

Teachers can choose how the money is spent – the only caveat is that it has to benefit all children. Grants this year have been used to subsidise trips to the Stained Glass Museum and Oliver Cromwell’s House, fund a nurture garden and beanbags and Yearbooks for Leavers – to name just a few!

Meredith said: “Imagine what your child’s class could do with even more funding? What might they create together? Where might they go to grow?”

Mother of two Sarah Follett, whose daughter Kara recently attended the Stained Glass Museum trip added: “We are so grateful that our children get to do amazing activities at school that take into account Ely’s history.

“The support FOTLS provides classes for their trips to places like the Stained Glass Museum is invaluable.”

Forty is the number of spaces on a standard Monopoly Board.

Forty is the highest number ever counted to on Sesame Street.

Forty years ago (back in 1984) Ghostbusters was the number one film, Band Aid raised significant funds for famine relief and a litre of petrol was only 35p!  What a year to remember.  On top of all of the above events, Ely City WI (ECWI) was established.

Members have been busy marking the occasion with nothing less than one of their bright and colourful craft bombs.  One of the iconic displays can be seen outside Sessions House in Lynn Road with a more detailed pictorial exhibit being hosted at Ely Library.

A spokesperson said “we are really excited to be marking our anniversary in the Town.  Our membership is going from strength to strength and, as the largest voluntary women’s organisation in the country; the WI is definitely something to be proud of.  Over the coming months we will be marking our Ruby Anniversary and look forward to reminiscing with old friends and welcoming new ones”.    

ECWI have a full and varied programme and is open to women over the age of 18 from all walks of life.  As a member you will have access to 11 main meetings a year, all of the sub-groups, our private social media groups and 8 copies of the WI magazine ‘WI Life’ per year.

We meet at Bishop Laney Sixth Form, Downham Road, CB6 2SH on the second Monday of each month, starting at 7.00pm until approximately 9.00pm. 

The next open meeting will be on 8th July 2024.
